The stresses in sandwich construction tee joints are determined using both experimental and numerical techniques. The features of interest in the tee joint are the use of a boundary angle laminate which reinforces the connection between the two component parts of the tee joint, the use of a fillet at the connection and the effect of any gap at the join. The experimental approach is thermoelastic stress analysis (TSA) based on the use of the SPATE (stress pattern analysis by thermal emissions) equipment. Techniques for calibrating the constituent parts of the joint are described so that quantit

Abstract:
Abstract Slug flow, which commonly occurs in the petroleum industry, is not always a desired flow pattern due to production operation problems it may cause in pipelines and processing facilities. To mitigate these problems, flow conditioning devices such as multiphase flow manifolds and slug catchers are used, where dissipation of slugs occurs in downward flow or in larger diameter pipe sections. Tee-junctions are important parts of these flow conditioning devices. In this work, Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations are conducted using ANSYS/FLUENT 17.2 to investigate slug dissipation

Abstract:
Aircraft Arresting Systems (AAS) for military applications utilize sacrificial panels made of Ultra-High Molecular Weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) that are embedded into the pavement beneath the AAS cable to protect the pavement from cable damage. Problems have been observed with the materials and practices used to seal the UHMWPE panel joints from water and debris. Data obtained from laboratory and field studies were used make improvements to current practice for sealing UHMWPE panel joints. The study evaluated four joint-sealant materials, eight alternative surface treatment and preparation tec

Full text
Abstract:
Post-weld heat treatment (PWHT) of welded joints is carried out for the following three reasons: (1) Improve the fracture toughness of the welded joint (2) Reduce welding residual stresses (3) Reduce heat-affected zone (HAZ) hardness. The objective of this work is to assess the need for PWHT at typical compressor stations.

Full text
Abstract:
This guideline is intended to provide a practical review of installation and maintenance practices for bolted joints that will minimize the likelihood of leakage or joint failure. The guideline addresses topics such as preload selection, installation tools, lubrication, gaskets, assembly procedures, preload verification tools, maintenance procedures, and vibration loosening. The guideline is designed to provide engineers and technicians with the knowledge necessary for successful assembly and maintenance of bolted joints. Use with caution. Abstract:
Demonstrating the reliability of existing pipelines under new loading conditions requires the use of standard methods that have known applicability to that type of pipe and data relevant to the pipe. Both of these may be lacking for early generation pipelines, such as ones from the 1930s and 1940s, where the girth welds can have been welded with processes not commonly used today (oxyacetylene welding) or with joint designs that use internal backing. Three types of joint designs were particularly used in this study: butt joints with an internal backing ring, butt joints with a backing or chi

Abstract:
This report describes the efforts to coat piping used at the GTI Coating Test Facility. In total 53 different coating systems were installed as part of this project. The goal of the inspection process was to take all measures necessary to ensure that each joint was prepared and turned over to the applicators in conformance to the specifications and in a similar condition to all other joints.

Abstract:
The evaluation of the defect tolerance assessment for girth welded joints of seamless pipes for off-shore applications when subjected to large cyclic plastic strains. The reeling laying technique, which is considered to be the most severe from this point of view, has been considered and studied in depth in order to determine how the several plastic strain cycles suffered by the joint during the laying could affect the defect tolerability. Advanced Engineering Critical Assessment methods have been considered in the analysis as the BS 7910 FAD approach implemented with the corrections recommende
