Abstract:
Background: Acute high dose exposure to teratogenic chemicals alters the proper development of an embryo leading to infertility, impaired fecundity, and few viable offspring. However, chronic exposure to sub-toxic doses of teratogens during early development may also have long-term impacts on egg quality and embryo viability. Methods: To test the hypothesis that low dose exposure during early development can impact long-term reproductive health, Caenorhabditis elegans larvae were exposed to 10 teratogens during larval development, and subsequently were examined for the pattern of egg-laying an

ABSTRACT The potential teratogenic effects of psychotropic medication use during pregnancy have been scrutinized ever since thalidomide contributed to phocomelia in the 1950's. Up to 35% of the half a million women becoming pregnant each day take psychotropic medication(s). Teratogens alter normal intrauterine fetal growth, anatomic structures, functioning and postnatal development. In this educational review article, we examine whether different classes of psychotropic medications have the potential to be teratogens or have other nonteratogenic effects. Specifically, we examined antidepressan

In two separate experiments, weight adjusted doses of nocodazole and acrylamide were injected intraperitoneally at various time intervals into twelve week old female mice. Within the nocodazole experiment, the doses were injected at varying time intervals before and after mating. On day seventeen of gestation, the female mice were sacrificed and their uterine contents examined. Nocodazole induced a significant increase in reproductive pathology per total implants when administered one hour after mating to the (SECxC57BL)F, stock: 5.00% total deads, 70.23% moles, and 3.41% abnormal fetuses. The potential role of embryonic cells in the IN VITRO bioactivation of teratogens was investigated, with limb bud mesenchyme cells, (LB), and mid brain cells,(CNS), derived from 13 day old rat embryos. The cells were cultured for 5 days and during this period differentiated into foci of chondrocytes (LB) or neurones (CNS). The development of the cells in culture mirrored the IN VIVO development and therefore can be used as a teratogen screen. The presence of constitutive forms of cytochrome P450 isoenzyme forms b, c and d (Levin et. al. 1978 nomenclature) were detected in both cell types after

As the current growing threat to maternal-fetal health, the most recent and largest outbreak of the Zika virus has introduced the devastating fetal effects of microcephaly and other central nervous system deficits. Therefore, the need for appropriate recognition, treatment, management, and prevention of the Zika virus prompts the necessity for further education and high quality level research to be conducted and utilized.
