The following thesis explores the social identities of TertuIIian, a Christian from Carthage who lived from approximately 160 to 220. Feminist scholars have long assumed that Tertullian, a second-century Church Father, was a misogynist. This assumption is based almost exclusively on the infamous “Devil’s gateway” passage in the opening chapter of De cultu feminarum. Angesichts einer Welt, die in fast allen Lebensbereichen von der Götterverehrung durchzogen war, hatte die Frage nach der Notwendigkeit und Reichweite der Abgrenzung für Christen der ersten Jahrhunderte sehr große Bedeutung. Am Beispiel der Schrift De idololatria Tertullians soll dieser Frage für einige prägnante »Kontaktzonen « im Karthago des späten zweiten und frühen dritten Jahrhunderts nachgegangen werden. Dabei wird sich zeigen, dass die Notwendigkeit der Abgrenzung unumstritten, die Frage nach deren Reichweite und genauer Umsetzung aber Anlass für sehr kontroverse Diskussionen war.<br>T

Current pentecostal scholarship is attempting to articulate pentecostal theological distinctives. For hermeneutics, this involves both a descriptive and a prescriptive approach to the use of the Bible. Michael Servetus (1508 - 1553) and Emanuel Swedenborg (1688 - 1772) are both considered heretics. They share many concepts about the nature of God, especially their rejection orthodox Nicene and Chalcedonian theology. This thesis explores their respective theologies relating to the Trinity and Christology, with speculation of what sources they may have had in common. While attention is paid to Ignatius, Irenaeus and Tertullian, particular attention is paid to Tertullian, whose work Adversus Praxean lays the foundation of Servetus' ideas and has much in common with Swedenborg's theology.
