Scleroderma is a chronic autoimmune connective tissue disease of unknown etiology characterized by excessive fibrosis and is broadly divided into two clinical entities: localized scleroderma (LSc) and systemic sclerosis (SSc). SSc is a multi-system disease resulting in both skin and visceral organ fibrosis. The more benign disorder, LSc is for the most part self-limited with the disease pathology being confined to the skin and subcutaneous tissues. Proposed factors involved in the pathogenesis of these disorders include endothelial cell injury and dysfunction, immunological alterations and inf

Tumour angiogenesis is a critical step in the growth, metastatic spread and re-growth of colorectal cancer (CRC). VEGF-A is one of the most studied angiogenic agents. A significant degree of the morbidity and mortality associated with colorectal cancer is related to the degree of tumour vascularity. As a consequence, considerable research has been undertaken in trying to understand the mechanisms involved in tumour associated angiogenesis and capillary permeability. This demonstrates that neonates are capable of developing mature immune responses under specific conditions. Commonly, LPS and bacterial infection have been used to identify the mechanisms behind the difference in immune responses depending on the time of day of the challenge. In this thesis, the colon dwelling nematode parasite Trichuris muris, which elicits a Th2 immune response in resistant mice, was used to identify if circadian rhythms influence infection outcome 3 weeks post infection. C57BL/6 mice infected with 200 eggs of T. muris at ZT0 (7am, lights on) expelled the parasite more efficiently than mice in

Abstract:
Anal Acoustic Reflectometry (AAR) is a novel technique providing a dynamic physiological assessment of anal sphincter function. In AAR wide band sound waves are transmitted into a thin polyurethane bag placed within the anal canal. The reflection of these sound waves allows calculation of the cross-sectional area of the anal canal. The bag is slowly inflated and deflated, during which simultaneous cross-sectional area and pressure measurements are taken along the entire length of the anal canal. This allows Opening Pressure, Opening Elastance, Closing Pressure, Closing Elastance and Hysteresis

Abstract:
The current study sought to investigate whether physiological responses, such as the electrodermographic response (EDG) and/or the frontalis muscle electrical potential (EMG) could be developed as a source of control over verbal responses. Discrimination training procedures using points exchangeable for money were employed to condition verbal responses occasioned by minute interoceptive events with 2 adult human subjects. Specific verbal responses were reinforced in the presence of changes in EDG with Sl and EDG and EMG with S2. Stimulus control over differentiated verbal responses was demonst

Abstract:
This thesis deals with the cross-cultural relations between Brecht and China through an analysis of how Brecht responded to the traditional Chinese theatre and how his drama was received in turn by modern Chinese theatre. It attempts to examine the respective socio-cultural or political contexts wherein such kind of crosscultural contacts were needed, and the consequent aesthetic-theatrical as well as socio-cultural or political changes brought about by these contacts that have produced two distinctively independent yet related forms of theatre. It is argued that Brecht's search for a theatre

The oral traditions in the Islamic world presented only the moral benefits of Jihad. Yet, the fact is that, though the moral benefits continued to exist before and after the First Crusade, though the interest seemed to have been present and the necessary intellectual theories continued on, Muslims did not advance the practical Jihad. Nonetheless, the disastrous Second Crusade struck a powerful chord among Muslims. It forced Muslims to battle for their very survival, and to do so they would have to adapt, but equally they could only survive by drawing on their imperial inheritance built up over

A high degree of interest continues in studying the central effects of ketamine, an NMDA receptor (NMDAR) antagonist, due to its potential relevance to schizophrenia, antidepressant efficacy and analgesia. This thesis investigates the brain response to ketamine to (1) determine whether it is a valuable pharmacological tool to investigate glutamatergic dysfunction and (2) further our knowledge on the role of the glutamatergic system in human cognition. The administration of low-dose ketamine to healthy volunteers was combined with arterial spin labelling (ASL) and blood oxygen level dependent (

Abstract:
This dissertation examines the processes of perception and cognition and demonstrates their application to the creation of aesthetically and artistically significant television content. By reexamining past understandings and assumptions, the ways in which artists and media producers have manipulated the information search and processing faculties of their audiences, and thus guided the meanings they ascribed to still and moving images, are explored. To reflect the multidisciplinary nature of television aesthetics, this research is not limited to a particular academic discipline. Instead, it dr

Early light environment has been shown to alter locomotor activity behaviour in adult rats and mice when exposed to constant light (LL), constant darkness (DD) or 12:12 hour light-dark cycles (LD). In particular, exposure to LL during lactation results in an increased ability to cope with exposure to LL as adults, implying that the ability to interpret light information is altered depending on early light environment. Therefore, the aim of this project was to explore how early light environment affects the photic response of the circadian system. The retina forms the first component of the pho

Changing the approach to communication and engagement with the local people in Liberia during the Ebola response turned out to be a key strategy in the Red Cross’ work. The Liberian Red Cross’ communication with the crisis-affected people changed significantly during the fight against the Ebola virus, from top-down information to a more dialogical communication approach. The Ebola epidemic in West Africa has caused more than 11 000 deaths since the outbreak in March 2014. Fungal species compete for space and nutrients in organic matter, resulting in strong morphological and biochemical reactions in the interacting mycelia. Interspecific mycelial interactions have attracted extensive studies because of their potential applications in biological control, bio-pulping, screening for novel bioactive metabolites and enhancement of extracellular enzyme production. Studies of interspecific mycelial combat have also contributed to the understanding of the structure and development of fungal communities.
