The article considers the problem of thanatological motives in modern foreign literature and namely in M. Zusak’s Book Thief. The study revealed that thanatological motives provide for the content and plot development of the novel. M. Zusak depicts Death as a living creature similar to humans, including it into the system of images and characters. Thanatological motives interpretation is dynamic, natural and bright in multiple shades.
