This paper analyzes various aspects of energy dependency and identifies the hidden factors behind national energy security. Based on a review of the scientific literature, the factors that reduce energy security in the consumption of natural gas, oil, and nuclear energy generation were identified. One such factor is import dependency on energy resources. Import dependency on energy is a crucial characteristic of energy security and can exacerbate the effects of external aggression, non-competitive behavior, and pressure. Most of the existing dependence analysis methods have been developed based on the approach suggested in the Technique for Human Error-Rate Prediction (THERP) HRA method. However, the THERP-based approaches may have limitations. For instance, it inevitably presents challenges regarding both the subjectivity of expert evaluation as well as experience using dependence for resource-intensive and time-consuming c

Abstract:
Highly concentrated imports can be a source of vulnerability in an environment characterized by geopolitical tensions. In light of this concern, some recently adopted policies aim to dilute advanced economies’ import concentration for key products. Likewise, a tendency towards supplier diversification has been observed in firm surveys. In this paper, we study how countries’ import concentration in a few external providers affects import prices. Import concentration decreased in OECD countries in the last two decades, especially up to the global financial crisis, in the hyper-globalization peri

Abstract:
Eastern Caribbean Small Island Developing States (SIDS) have a high dependence on international trade for income, employment and poverty reduction given their extreme openness, small market size, narrow range of resources and productive capabilities and specialized economic structures, making them vulnerable to external shocks, the most frequent being tropical storms. The objective of this paper is to investigate the impact of tropical storms on international trade for eight Eastern Caribbean SIDS over the period 2000-2019, as well as the mediating role of the Real Effective Exchange Rate (REE

Abstract:
This paper analyzes how regional trade agreements (RTAs) among Asian economies affected the supply of essential medical goods in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. International trade is an integral part of accessing essential medical goods for Asian economies during the COVID-19 pandemic. Yet, the analysis finds that their nature of trade dependence varies. Furthermore, economies that are party to RTAs containing trade facilitation measures can mitigate the adverse impact on trade in essential medical goods. This emphasizes the role of governments in preparing Asian economies to be more re

Abstract:
China’s "Science and Technology Daily," a state-run newspaper, published a revealing series of articles in 2018 on 35 different Chinese technological import dependencies. The articles, accessible here in English for the first time, express concern that strategic Chinese industries are vulnerable to any disruption to their supply of specific U.S., Japanese, and European “chokepoint” technologies. This issue brief summarizes the article series and analyzes the Chinese perspective on these import dependencies and their causes.

Background Precision public health is an effective strategy for reaching the last mile in service delivery, but is frequently hampered by its dependence on unattainable data standards and the non-transferability of the solutions designed. This paper proposes a five-part system involving 1) dynamic data governance, 2) hyperlocal community data, 3) data synthesis and analysis, 4) the design and implementation of precision interventions, and 5) correlation between community data and traditional outcome data. Recent studies of community network data have found the connectedness of communities to b

Abstract:
In this study, we examine how public and private debt buildup is related to currency depreciation pressure. Our empirical analysis of a panel dataset of 59 advanced and emerging markets reveals that both private and public debt exacerbate currency vulnerability. However, the evidence of a significant effect on currency depreciation pressure is more robust and consistent for private debt than public debt. Furthermore, we find that excessive private debt buildup can be particularly harmful in emerging markets. In addition, our evidence suggests that greater dependence on external financing exace
