Abstract:
This thesis examines the relationship between the fifteenth-century Kingis Quair and the text which it cites as its inspiration, Boethius' Consolation of Philosophy, finding analogues for the poet's response to this authoritative material in vernacular literature. The Quair is perhaps best known for its association with James I of Scotland, and an analysis of the connection between the king and the poem is employed as a means of demonstrating the extent to which his identity shapes the meaning of the work and is, in turn, reformulated within it. The Quair's treatment of the Consolation is a vi

The case of human development is taken as a paradigm for rights of development and duties to cause development. I argue that our standard intuitions about the moral status of infants presuppose that we ascribe genuine moral significance (including rights of development) to non-persons. A number of considerations (both intuitive and formal) seem to lead to the thesis that there are no necessary conditions for membership in our moral community, or the nearly-equivalent thesis that certain sorts of potentiality are sufficient for rights of development. The Kinds of Mathematical Objects is an exploration of the taxonomy of the mathematical realm and the metaphysics of mathematical objects. Sets, in contrast, are not essentially values of abstraction functors: the best explanation of the nature of sethood is given by a v

This doctoral thesis identifies and provides original descriptive accounts of two schools of thought in the philosophy of beauty: (i) the 20th-century ‘Anti-Aesthetic’ movement and (ii) the 21st-century ‘Beauty-Revival’ movement. I argue that the Anti-Aesthetic movement is devoted to a decisive negation of beauty—denying its importance as a philosophical notion and its significance as a lived experience. The Beauty-Revival movement affirms the value of beauty as a philosophical notion and as a lived aesthetic experience. Corresponding to these commitments, the Anti-Aesthetic and Beauty-Revival

Locke's Essay Concerning Human Understanding is considered by many to be the locus classicus of a number of influential arguments for conventionalism, according to which there are no objective, privileged ways of classifying things in the natural world. In the dissertation I argue that Locke never meant to reject natural kinds. Still, the challenge is to explain how, within a metaphysics that explicitly denies mind-independent essences, we can make sense of a privileged, objective sorting of substances.
