Summary Objectives: The traditional techniques of data analysis are often not sufficient to characterize the complex dynamics of respiration. In this study the respiratory pattern variability was analyzed using symbolic dynamics. Methods: A group of 20 patients on weaning trials from mechanical ventilation were studied at two different pressure support ventilation levels. Breath duration (TTOT) time series and the relation TI/TTOT, that contains the influence of inspiratory time (TI), were considered. Length-3 words and 3 different symbols were proposed. The elasticity equations have been solved to an arbitrary degree of precision for a thick-walled orthotropic cylinder, subject to axisymmetric loading. The theory is directly applicable to a layered composite material where each layer is orthotropic in character. The solution proceeds by representing the deformations of the cylinder wall as a power series in a non-dimensional radial parameter. By introducing a generalized stress resultant and a generalized stiffness for the material, a series of coupled second order differential equations in the coefficients of the deformation series results.

Abstract This paper introduces an innovative approach to time series anomaly detection, focusing on addressing the challenge of adapting to concept drift within input time series. Traditional time series anomaly detection methods often assume a stable environment for modeling. However, in practical applications, time series data may be influenced by concept drift, where the data distribution and features change over time. To effectively tackle this issue, we propose a dynamic adaptive model capable of real-time detection and adaptation to concept drift within time series data. Our algorithm le

Abstract:
In this effort, we present novel nonlinear modeling of two solenoid actuated butterfly valves subject to a sudden contraction and then develop an optimal configuration in the presence of highly coupled nonlinear dynamics. The valves are used in the so-called “Smart Systems” to be employed in a wide range of applications including bioengineering, medicine, and engineering fields. Typically, tens of the actuated valves are instantaneously operating to regulate the amount of flow and also to avoid probable catastrophic disasters which have been observed in the practice. We focus on minimizing the

Abstract:
A novel stochastic model is developed to describe a random series of impacts in modal testing. The number of the force pulses in a finite time interval is modeled as a Poisson process. The force pulses in the series are assumed to have an arbitrary, deterministic shape function and random amplitudes and arrival times. A detailed stochastic analysis is undertaken and is validated by numerical simulation. The main advantages of the random impact series method are increased energy input to the test structure and improved signal-to-noise ratio. The method can also average out the slight nonlineari

Abstract:
Experimental work was done to evaluate the effects of welding on the hardness, tensile and toughness properties of the heat affected zone (HAZ) of a series of commercial high strength micro-alloyed linepipe steels, produced through controlled rolling and accelerated cooling (thermo-mechanical control process - TMCP). The test materials, representative of modern low carbon linepipe steels, were selected such as to cover a broad range of chemistries (alloy /micro-alloy designs) and mechanical properties (X 70 and X 80).

A low-constraint test designed to reduce unnecessary conservatism in the measurement of toughness for use in the assessment of flaws in pipeline girth welds has been developed. The test was first proven on nominally homogeneous material (pipe base metal) to check the practicality of the procedures and to study the effects of the controlling geometric parameters (a/W, etc.) on toughness. The intent of this report is to reference the publications resulting from this work and to summarize the principal conclusions. Abstract:
Cracks and their formations in concrete structures have been a common and long-lived problem, mainly due to the intrinsic brittleness of the concrete. Concrete structures, such as rigid pavement and bridge decks, are prone to deformations and deteriorations caused by shrinkage, temperature fluctuation, and traffic load, which can affect their service life. Rehabilitation of concrete structures is expensive and challenging—not only from maintenance viewpoints but also because they cannot be used for services during maintenance. It is critical to significantly improve the ductility of concrete t

Telecommuting, the practice of working remotely at home, increased significantly (25% to 35%) early in the COVID-19 pandemic. This shift represented a major societal change that reshaped the family, work, and social lives of many Californians. These changes also raise important questions about what factors influenced telecommuting before, during, and after COVID-19, and to what extent changes in telecommuting have influenced transportation patterns across commute modes, employment, land use, and environment. Failures in transmission pipelines are often the result of mechanical damage. The US DOT has indicated that 20 to 40 percent of the serious pipeline incidents in any given year are related to mechanical damage. This damage is due to third party activities, mishandling during construction, pipeline bedding material consolidation, or ground movement. This project report includes a discussion of the following work: Development of a criteria for weld interaction with restrained rock dents, pipe ovality and wrinkles; Development of a means of considering pressure fluctuation severity in these crite
