Clinical guidelines published by the national institute for health and clinical excellence in the United Kingdom (NICE) recommend renal and thyroid function checks before lithium is prescribed, as well as ongoing monitoring of renal function, thyroid function and serum lithium levels. Lithium-induced drug toxicity is frequently seen in clinical practice. While the ongoing monitoring serves to monitor reversible side ef

ABSTRACT Objective To investigate, by transcranial magnetic stimulation, the effects of valproate on silent period and corticomotor excitability. Methods: thirty patients with generalized epilepsy were studied at baseline, and re‐examined 4 (S1) and 25 (S2) weeks after the administration of valproate (mean dose: 1040 ± 284 mg). Transcranial magnetic stimulation was performed with a figure of eight coil (recording, first dorsal interosseous). Threshold was measured at 1% steps. Silent period was measured using a recently described protocol. Briefly, silent periods were elicited at 5% increments

Sustained silent reading (SSR) is a practice involving readers in the process of reading over a designated time period. The basic assumption, in a pedagogical sense, is that practice in reading contributes to reading achievement. In the same light, Gambrell (1978) proposed that "cormnonsense notions about the reading process tell us that independent reading skills are enhanced through daily practice in silent reading ... It does so by unraveling why between 1679 and 1685, the persecution of the French Huguenots by Louis XIV only received limited press coverage in the Dutch Republic. It reveals that, first, publicity strongly depended on whether the victims themselves regarded international attention as desirable to attain their political ends. Second, despite limited censorship, publicity nevertheless depended on the tacit approval or stimulation of the Dutch authorities. The chapter

Abstract:
This interdisciplinaray work combines expertise in engineering and entomology in Israel and the US, to develop an acoustic trap for mate-seeking female medflies. Medflies are among the world's most economically harmful pests, and monitoring and control efforts cost about $800 million each year in Israel and the US. Efficient traps are vitally important tools for medfly quarantine and pest management activities; they are needed for early detection, for predicting dispersal patterns and for estimating medfly abundance within infested regions. Early detection facilitates rapid response to invasio

Abstract:
Field bends in large diameter pipe are routinely used in the construction of oil and gas pipelines. Mild ripples along the intrados are often unavoidable where such bends have a high D/t or high yield strength. Present regulations and industry standards differ in their treatment of mild ripples, ranging from silence to prohibition, depending upon interpretation. Consequently, the application of acceptance standards for such features is inconsistent, leading to variable standards of inspection and probable scrapping of otherwise sound bends. Finite element analysis (FEA) was used to estimate th

Corruption undermines many outcomes across development sectors, yet little is known about how social norms drive corruption or undermine anticorruption efforts in sector work. The conservation sector is no exception. The current study examined corruption and social norms related to infrastructure investments and site planning decisions and their subsequent effect on conservation outcomes. The study focused on the Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park, one of four protected areas under the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) Sustainable Interventions for Biodiv

Abstract:
This report describes several advances in the cyclic failure assessment of silt soils with immediate and practical benefit to the geotechnical earthquake engineering profession. First, a database of cyclic loading test data is assembled, evaluated, and used to assess trends in the curvature of the CRR-N (cyclic resistance ratio - the number of equivalent cycles) relationship. This effort culminated in a plasticity index-dependent function which can be used to estimate the exponent b in the power law describing cyclic resistance, and may be used to estimate the cyclic resistance of silt soils a

Abstract:
Seismic ground failure potential from liquefaction is generally undertaken in three steps. First, a susceptibility evaluation determines if the soil in a particular layer is in a condition where liquefaction triggering could potentially occur. This is followed by a triggering evaluation to estimate the likelihood of triggering given anticipated seismic demands, environmental conditions pertaining to the soil layer (e.g., its depth relative to the ground water table), and the soil state. For soils where triggering can be anticipated, the final step involves assessments of the potential for grou
