Abstract:
Using stories written for young children can be effective in the education of college students. Storytelling is a helpful instructional method that is relevant to many management topics. This activity uses picture books, which can be read to students in “story hour” fashion and then tied to management principles being taught. This activity can be done successfully with either undergraduate or graduate students. The activity is described from a general perspective; in the appendices, we provide seven examples of book summaries, learning objectives, teaching notes, potential challenges, and debriefing questions that have been used to address a variety of management topics.

Abstract:
Any Psychoanalytical interpretation focuses primarily on the inner workings of human mind. Freud originated psychoanalysis and Lacan reoriented it. Freud found the term ‘unconscious’ which Lacan modified and made the most essential subject of his Psychoanalytical theory. He believed that the desire is formed through the Symbolic Other and Imaginary other in the formation of Jouissance. He maintained that desire exists due to the presence of the Other. In naming it, the subject goes on attaining newer forms and shapes or roles. In fact, desire hides itself in discourse which never presents it fully or never gives it a full expression and as such there remains a leftover – a surplus of desire is invariably present in the discourse. This notion made Lacan to shape his faith and belief that desire is the desire of / for the Other. For him, desire is central to all human roles, endeavors or activities. It gives birth to almost all Lacanian concepts and as such is named in the presence of the Other. It is generally believed that Chopin’s fiction is highly pregnant with Lacanian realm of desire or symbolic and almost all her stories seem an exploration of the self, other and social assertion of individuality.

Abstract:
The present article on Kate Chopin’s The Story of an Hour (1894) explores women’s anxieties and struggles for self identity within the arena of strict social and traditional structures deeply rooted in the then American society in the late nineteenth century. Through this short story, Chopin portraits her feminist view and uses her own inspiration for surviving normal life in the mind of the American women for whom existing freely realizing their identity and potentiality had been far cry. Thus, drawing upon the idea of Simone de Beauvoir and other writers, this paper examines the desire and struggle of the female protagonist, Mrs. Mallard for her meaningful existence in the male-dominated society in America.

Philpott, Carey. "The story of an hour : a sociocultural understanding of student teacher narratives of experience." Thesis, Lancaster University, 2015. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.658085.

Abstract:
This thesis uses a framework derived from the work of Wertsch and Bruner to provide a sociocultural analysis of narratives of classroom experience created collaboratively by student teachers, school based mentors and university based tutors participating in a one year secondary Post Graduate Certificate in Education course at one English university. The narratives analysed are constructed during meetings in one placement school between students, mentors and tutors after all three have participated in an episode of teaching led by the student. The thesis explores the ways in which the Professional Standards for Qualified Teacher Status provide what Wertsch calls a narrative template that 'co-authors ' student teachers narratives of classroom experience and, therefore, shapes what sense they make of their experiences and what they learn from them. The thesis also explores the process through which the student teachers master this narrative template during these collaborative narrative making events.

Full text
Abstract:
This paper attempts to solve the problem of postmodern tragedy by examining two films by British director Michael Winterbottom, Tristram Shandy: a Cock and Bull Story, and 24 Hour Party People. Actually, I am not certain that the notion of postmodern tragedy is problematic as much as it is non-traditional in terms of classical critical definitions of tragedy. The films suggest that the postmodern protagonist faces the same trials as the protagonist from any other era, but responds to them differently, if at all. My thesis states that the protagonist‘s failure to respond adequately to the consequences of his choices, indeed, his failure to learn from his own repeated failures, is the basis for the tragedy presented in the films, as well as the basis for tragedy in the postmodern era. Certainly choice has always been key regarding the tragic fall of characters, from Oedipus to Willy Loman, and beyond. The particular circumstances of the films in question, however, suggest that the fall is not here the ultimate tragedy. Rather, these films clearly portray their respective protagonists as incapable of falling, in the tragic sense, because, whether consciously or unconsciously, they tend to reach not for greatness, but for failure, and as each failure mounts, they descend a little lower, as though the true glory of endeavor is to dig as deep a hole as possible by mounting failure on top of failure. In a sense, as the paper makes clear, the protagonists of these films attempt to define success by failure, or, to use a mathematical metaphor, they attempt to define themselves by their proximity to zero.

Rezaie, Munib. "Neutered Dragon: A Critical Look at the Career of Jackie Chan." Scholarly Repository, 2010. http://scholarlyrepository.miami.edu/oa_theses/22.

Full text
Abstract:
Jackie Chan has had a long and consistently successful career in the entertainment industry, becoming the most universally recognized Chinese performer, second only perhaps, to Bruce Lee. His rags-to-riches path to stardom has been well documented and oft quoted. At a time when all the up-and-coming martial arts actors felt the pressure to be carbon copies of Bruce Lee, Chan made his mark on the screen by making his persona everything that Lee?s wasn?t. With 1978?s Snake in the Eagle?s Shadow and Drunken Master, Chan?s revolutionary comic and realistic persona was firmly established with audiences. Throughout the 80s and 90s, Chan remained undeniably the biggest star in the East, demonstrating wild popularity in not only Asia, but throughout Europe and Africa as well. After several failed attempts at breaking into the American market, Chan finally achieved success with 1998?s Rush Hour. Unfortunately, success in the West has come with strict limitations placed on the characters he has been allowed to play. These limitations most often manifest themselves in the sexuality and morality of the characters, as well as the dramatic opportunities available to Chan within the films. In order to keep Chan?s vast filmography ? which has recently seen him sign on to his 100th leading role ? I have separated it into three distinct stages. The first stage of his career begins with his groundbreaking turn in Snake in the Eagle?s Shadow and ends with his last Asian film before successfully breaking into Hollywood, 1998?s Who am I?. From this point on, his career takes two distinct paths: the path in Hollywood, beginning with Rush Hour, and the path in Asia, which begins with 1999?s Gorgeous. Each stage features distinct characteristics and trends with rare digression. I will provide examples from a selection of films within each stage of his career in order to clarify the traits and characteristics of the roles he has taken in each one. The purpose of this thesis is twofold. First and foremost, it will reveal the extent to which Chan faces negative stereotyping in the United States by clearly offering the contrasting positive representations he is able to achieve overseas. The second aim, which has naturally arisen from the workings of the first, is a critical look at a career that has found its actor bored with the kinds of films that have brought him worldwide fame.

Abstract:

In this essay, Kate Chopin's portraits of women in three short stories, 'The Story of an Hour', 'A Respectable Woman', Athénaïse and the novel The Awakening are studied. It is argued that the outcomes depicted can be seen as increasingly provocative and extreme and that the main conflict and ending of The Awakening is a development and combination of the conflicts and resolutions in the three short stories.

I uppsatsen studeras Kate Chopins kvinnoporträtt i tre noveller, 'The Story of an Hour', 'A Respectable Woman', Athénaïse och i romanen The Awakening. Syftet är att visa att huvudhandlingen och slutet på The Awakening är en utveckling och kombination av de alltmer provokativa och extrema handlingarna och upplösningarna i novellerna.

Abstract:
I believe an individual can be profiled by their color preferences, but not indefinitely, for a shorter period of time, a 24-hour period of time. A person's state of mind will change continually based on their experiences. These experiences will affect their perception and preference of color. I developed a model that will map an individual's profile, a portrait, through color. Participants are given a worksheet and a list of terms describing personality traits and states of mind. The worksheet is categorized by event, time of day, duration, impact, and summed term. From midnight to midnight, a 24-hour period, the participant records any event that they encounter providing information-fulfilling categories stated above. I use that information to then map out their portrait of 24-hours through color.

Abstract:
With the rise of the millennial generation, a new roster of cities has sprung to life – the 18-hour cities. They can be defined as a vibrant second-tier city where there’s a big potential for employment and economic growth and at the same time they offer a lower cost of living and doing business than in 24-hour gateway cities like New York City or San Francisco. They have been named the hottest places for real estate investments by industry literature which poses the question if 18-hour cities really offer better investments than 24-hour cities. This paper uses a statistical analysis framework complemented with qualitative interviews of industry professionals based in 18-hour markets to test this notion. From the statistical analysis, it has been found that 18-hour cities offer higher yields than the 24-hour markets but the cash return cannot be said do differ between the two. Furthermore, the interviews with industry professionals indicate that the 18-hour markets have major future growth prospects because of their job growth, population growth and the large in-migration of high-skilled labor gravitating towards these amenity-rich areas where they can receive the highest reward-for-skill

Abstract:
"Sweet Black Pussy for Sale" sets the stage for this very feminine and colloquial laced collection of verse. Both figuratively and literally, the voices of a seldom-traveled African-American culture are depicted through these songs. In this thesis, I consider myself a GRIOT, sworn to tell nothing but the truth. These poems speak from places some might consider sacred and others quite sinful. These poems moan out the anthems of those unsung heroes and heroines from my family lineage. The voices of my long dead grandfather, grandmother, aunts and great uncle haunt poems such as "Blues," "Salvation," "A Memorial for Lawrence," and "Apartment 12 B Dwight D. Eisenhower Street." These poems say, "Even when it's sunny on the other side of town somebody could be wearing a frown. It's because the blues don't mess with folks who ain't got anything to lose.â"

Abstract:
Question-answering (QA) on video contents is a significant challenge for achieving human-level intelligence as it involves both vision and language in real-world settings. Here we demonstrate the possibility of an AI agent performing video story QA by learning from a large amount of cartoon videos. We develop a video-story learning model, i.e. Deep Embedded Memory Networks (DEMN), to reconstruct stories from a joint scene-dialogue video stream using a latent embedding space of observed data. The video stories are stored in a long-term memory component. For a given question, an LSTM-based attention model uses the long-term memory to recall the best question-story-answer triplet by focusing on specific words containing key information. We trained the DEMN on a novel QA dataset of children’s cartoon video series, Pororo. The dataset contains 16,066 scene-dialogue pairs of 20.5-hour videos, 27,328 fine-grained sentences for scene description, and 8,913 story-related QA pairs. Our experimental results show that the DEMN outperforms other QA models. This is mainly due to 1) the reconstruction of video stories in a scene-dialogue combined form that utilize the latent embedding and 2) attention. DEMN also achieved state-of-the-art results on the MovieQA benchmark.

Abstract:
Abstract As a part of the assessment of foundation resistance for monopiles, several offshore wind standards prescribe symmetric 35-hour (or 42-hour) storm sequences in terms of wind speed and significant wave height. The temporal evolution of the peak period is not specified explicitly in the standards, despite the fact that large monopile wind turbines are sensitive to the wave period. In the present work, the storm sequences according to the standards are first compared to hindcast data for intermediate water depth locations in the North Sea. An alternative storm sequence is proposed based on the hindcast data, and possible values of the peak period evolution are proposed for the standard models. The responses of a 10 MW monopile wind turbine are then computed for both the standard and proposed sequences using a time domain aero-hydro-servo-elastic code coupled to a macro element model for the soil-structure interaction. The resulting mudline load cycles are then compared for the different storm sequences.

Abstract:
Abstract There is a long trend in off-highway vehicles toward higher energy efficiency and electro-hydraulic control. Digital pumps and motors are poised to become a significant enabling technology in this trend. This paper analyzes a 20-tonne tracked excavator that was equipped with digital displacement pumps and evaluated for efficiency and productivity. Previous research by Artemis Intelligent Power demonstrated improvements compared to a conventional, negative flow control excavator hydraulic system. With support from Artemis, the Danfoss Digital Displacement Excavator (DDE) is a step forward in terms of technology and commercial readiness. DDE is based on a CAT 320 next-generation excavator with completely electronic controls and advanced sensor and operator-assistance features. In before/after testing, DDE showed 15% higher productivity (in meters of trench per hour) and 13% higher efficiency (in meters per liter of fuel) for a trench digging cycle. Static pump efficiency is only part of the story; dynamic response and controllability contributed to the measured performance gains. Potential causes for variation in measurement were analyzed including operator variation, flow variation, and machine response.

Abstract:
Wave measurements were obtained at an Eastern Green Canyon location during hurricane Ike in September 2009. The eye of the hurricane passed approximately 68 nautical miles to the South West of the measurement location. The significant wave height was above 30 ft for about 20 hours and above 40 ft for about 5.5 hours. The wave time series provide an insight into the wave field as the storm approaches and leaves the location. One of the interesting features observed was that there were repetitive sequences, where each sequence consisted of a period of increased wave energy followed by periods of reduced wave energy. Each sequence lasted approximately one hour. Measured wave crest, wave trough and wave height distributions are discussed. One unique wave event was observed. This event was characterized by a predictably-sized crest followed by a very deep trough.

Abstract:
The variability of extreme responses of a flexible riser due to wave frequency motions of weather-vaning FPSO is investigated numerically. The objective of this study is to examine such variability in isolation from that caused by the low frequency (slow drift) vessel motions and vessel offsets. Investigation of the extreme value distributions of flexible risers provides the statistical foundation for flexible riser Response Based Analysis (RBA) for use in system design; the determination of the statistical properties of extreme flexible riser responses provides a method for the prediction of extreme responses of offshore systems in cyclonic conditions. A case study conducted in OrcaFlex included an FPSO vessel with a Lazy-S configured riser system. Five riser responses were selected in critical locations including tension, heave, and curvature responses. The environmental cases included two cyclonic storms consisting of multiple half-hour intervals. For each interval, time domain simulations included 40 wave realizations in order to provide a dataset for robust fitting of the extreme value distributions in the Gumbel format. Once the short term interval distributions were established, response distributions in a storm were generated by multiplying the short term distributions and the most probable maximum (MPM) response in a storm computed. A comparison of maximum interval, storm and 3-hour MPMs is presented, which indicates to what extent the MPM response in a storm exceeds the corresponding maximum interval response. Differences between the tension and heave responses are compared with those observed in the curvature responses. This study was limited to riser excitation by waves, current and wave frequency motions of a turret moored FPSO and it is expected that further inclusion of low frequency motions would contribute to the response variability. The inclusion of such variability will ultimately enable the storm-based statistical approach to be used for the development of long-term distribution of the riser responses.

Abstract:
Abstract Stochastic wave properties are crucial for the design of offshore structures. Short-crested seas are commonly seen at the sites of offshore structures, especially during storm events. A long time duration is required in order to obtain the statistical properties, which is challenging for numerical simulations because of the high demand of computational resources. In this scenario, a potential flow solver is ideal due to its computational efficiency. A procedure of producing accurate representation of short-crested sea states using the open-source fully nonlinear potential flow model REEF3D::FNPF is presented in the paper. The procedure examines the sensitivity of the resolutions in space and time as well as the arrangements of wave gauge arrays. A narrow band power spectrum and a mildly spreading directional spreading function are simulated, and an equal energy method is used to generate input waves to avoid phase-locking. REEF3D::FNPF solves the Laplace equation together with the boundary conditions using a finite difference method. A sigma grid is used in the vertical direction and the vertical grid clustering follows the principle of constant truncation error. High-order discretisation methods are implemented in space and time. Message passing interface is used for high performance computation using multiple processors. Three-hour simulations are performed in full-scale at a hypothetic offshore site with constant water depth. The significant wave height, peak period, kurtosis, skewness and ergodicity are examined in the numerically generated wave field. The stochastic wave properties in the numerical wave tank (NWT) using REEF3D::FNPF match the input wave conditions with high fidelity.

In ASME 2017 36th International Conference on Ocean, Offshore and Arctic Engineering. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/omae2017-61363.

Abstract:
The objective of the paper is to study the effect of different parameters regarding on-bottom stability of subsea pipelines under combined irregular waves and currents. The effect of friction coefficient is first investigated. The development of lateral displacement and penetration for three different friction coefficients are compared for sandy and clayey seabed respectively when applied wave and current conditions are kept same for all the cases. The friction coefficient affects the soil resistance force and further changes the initial time when the pipeline starts to move in the lateral direction. The accumulated displacement reduces for large friction coefficient and it results in less penetration. The total effect of the increasing friction coefficient depends on the competition between the increased friction force and the reduced passive soil resistance force. The pipeline usually crosses different types of soil along the route. Hence, different combinations of soil types along the route are applied in the analysis. The soil property at middle of the pipeline is found to be important when the boundary conditions at both ends are fixed. Three analyzing procedures, namely standard 3-hour procedure, the procedure recommended by PONDUS and the procedure recommended by DNV, could be used for on-bottom stability analysis under storm conditions. The comparison of these procedures shows that the procedure recommended by PONDUS is the most appropriate for the storm conditions. The procedure recommended by DNV considers the build-up of initial penetration before the storm; and it could be applied in the analysis when the penetration is stabilized after the start -up time (20% of 3-hour).

Abstract:
This paper considers the dynamic response of an example minimum structure, in this case a monopod, for conditions typical of the North West Shelf of Australia. The dynamic response is assessed using both conventional 3 hour storm simulation techniques, and the Constrained NewWave methodology. The results from both analyses are found to be comparable in terms of the DAF value that was found. The structure was found to have significant dynamic response, particularly as the wave return period increased.
