We use an accurate sp3V* tight-binding Hamiltonian to present a strong case to support the theory of a two-band anti-crossing model describing the electronic structure of GaNxAs1-x and InyGa1-yNxAs1-x alloys, in terms of the interaction between the conduction band edge and a higher-lying band of resonant nitrogen states. For the first time, we derive the functional dependence of the matrix elements of the two-band model and evaluate its parameters α, β and En. They are observed with the soft x-ray telescope on Skylab to be approximately 22 Mm in diameter with a brighter inner core of width 4-7 Mm although with the Normal Incidence X-ray Telescope their dimensions are observed to be typically 6 Mm x 9 Mm. Methods for time resolving sub-femtosecond scale Auger-type dynamics in molecules and atoms are discussed. The thesis presents a novel technique for recovering such dynamics by clocking the process with high-harmonic generation. A complete model of helium-like line and continuum emission in astrophysical plasmas has been incorporated into the plasma simulation code CLOUDY. All elements between He and Zn are treated, any number of levels can be considered, and a full treatment of radiative and collisional processes is included. This includes photoionization from all levels, line transfer including continuum pumping and destruction by background opacities, scattering, and collisional processes. A novel method by which to calculate the near edge X-rayabsorption fine structure region of the X-ray absorption spectrum has been derived and implemented.
