The disclosed concept relates to a novel modified and simplified steam-turbine Rankine cycle without rejection of the cycle waste heat of condensation, which is driven by a thermocompressor (ejector) operating in the wet-vapor region. The thus modified steam-turbine Rankine cycle can theoretically achieve the maximum possible thermal efficiency (~100%). The wet-vapor mixture circulating within the thermocompressor is being separated in a dedicated cylindrical separation tank, so that the saturated water is pumped to a water heater where it receives the cycle heat input, while the saturated vap

Abstract The thermocompressor, a little-known class of Stirling devices that efficiently compresses gas, presents new challenges for modeling and experimental validation. In modeling, traditional analytic assumptions about displacer motion are limiting. In experimental verification, few devices have actually been built and tested. In this paper, the authors test the feasibility of a lumped-parameter approach for predicting the performance of Stirling thermocompressors subject to different displacer motion profiles. Consisting only of a displacer piston, the Stirling thermocompressor’s displacer piston motion is directly controlled by a brushless DC motor so that the frequency of operation can be tuned to output the maximum power. Stirling engines are silent, high-efficiency power sources that generate work by shuttling a working fluid between hot and cold volumes while exploiting the working fluid’s change in pressure. Stirling engines are able to use multiple sources of heat to create this needed temperature difference, making them ideally suited for diverse waste heat recovery applications. A novel application of this technology would be to reuse waste heat from one industrial process to generate compressed air to power a second, pneumatic process, thus increasing a manufacturing facility’s overall energy efficiency.

Abstract The paper industry uses steam to dry paper web through cylinder dryers. As steam condenses inside the cylinder dryer, the condensate is removed by means of either a stationary or a rotary siphon. However, during the siphoning process for transporting the condensate, flashing of the condensate occurs, which could cause backflow or discontinuity in the siphoning process. To resolve this flashing issue, two approaches have been employed: (a) increasing the amount of steam supplied to the cylinder to “blow-through” the stalled condensate-steam mixture and (b) reducing the back pressure by
