Friction drilling is a non-conventional hole-making process suitable for thin-section, ductile metals. During friction drilling, heat is generated due to tool rotation and the resulting flow of metal creates a bushing on the exit side of the hole. The bushing offers a longer engagement length for any subsequent thread making process. The threaded holes in this study were created by friction drilling and thread forming in 6082-T6 aluminium alloy. Four scenarios of the threaded holes were created with four levels of rotation rates of friction drilling processes (2000 rpm to 4000 rpm) and the mec

The main problem of shaping threaded holes in sheet blanks with a thickness of less than two millimeters is to obtain a threaded surface that provides the necessary strength of the threaded connection. The method of forming holes with flanges in sheet blanks by rotating punch (thermal drilling) has wide technological capabilities. The rotational speed of the punch, as well as its axial feed, affect the shape, size and properties of the material of the resulting hole, which in its turn affects the length of the screwing and the strength of the threaded joint.

<p>The authors are studying a steel concrete composite slab joint structure improving workability by applying high strength stud bolts. The bottom steel plate is 6mm steel plate, which limits the axial force that can be introduced by the stud bolts to about half that of high-strength bolts. Consequently, compared to the high-strength bolt friction joint, the number of bolts increase, potentially affecting bolt placement and construction. We focused on the tendency of friction coefficient to increase with decreasing contact pressure when the joint surface treatment is inorganic zinc. In t

Abstract. Making threaded connections to thin metal sheets requires locally thickening of the sheet in order to provide enough thread length for a structurally sound connection. Shaped Metal Deposition processes like Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW) allow to locally build-up material in order to provide thickness for a sufficient length of thread engagement. This publication describes the research towards local thickening of a titanium sheet by means of pulsed Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG) droplet deposition, aimed at creating threaded holes for thin shelled bone fracture fixation plates. Abstract Automotive OEMs continue to lightweight their fleets to increase fuel economy and electric drive range to meet government requirements and consumer expectations. This push towards lightweighting has led to increasing use of advanced high strength steels in both car body and safety critical systems, such as seats. These steels present different challenges for traditional joining technologies, especially thread forming fasteners. Thread forming fasteners are externally threaded fasteners like machine screws that are driven into a pilot hole where they form their own threads and then tig

This study provides an experimental and theoretical investigation of the effect of hole clearance and thread fit on the self-loosening of tightened threaded fasteners that are subjected to a cyclic transverse service load. An experimental procedure and test set up are developed in order to collect real-time data on the rate of clamp load loss per cycle as well as the loosening rotation of the bolt head. Three levels of hole clearance are investigated; namely, 3%, 6%, and 10% of the bolt nominal diameter. For the commonly used 2A thread fit for a selected bolt size, three classes of the nut thr

Torque is the most common tightening strategy used to control clamp load when bolts are tightened, since a direct relationship between torque and clamp load exists. For unified and metric fasteners used in non-critical applications, there are torque tables available in the literature that provide a guideline as to what torque level is recommended to be used based on fastener size, thread pitch, and material class. For critical applications, the tightening specification is usually developed based on individual cases. For self tapping and thread rolling screws, the tabulated torque values availa

TENSILE BEHAVIOR OF T-STUB TO HOLLOW SECTION COLUMN USING THREAD-FIXED ONE-SIDE BOLTS AT HIGH TEMPERATURES. The Hong Kong Institute of Steel Construction, 2025. https://doi.org/10.18057/ijasc.2025.21.2.7.

Abstract:
The Thread-fixed One-side Bolt (TOB), which utilizes internal threads in the bolt hole instead of a nut, enables installation from one side, thereby overcoming the challenge of connecting closed-section components, such as steel tube columns, which are not suitable for traditional bolt connections. This study establishes and validates a Finite Element Model (FEM) to investigate the mechanical performance of TOB connections under high temperature conditions. The results show that the wall thickness of the column has a significant influence on the performance of the connection; an increase in wa
