Agriculture is a major contributor to environmental pollution. About quarter of water bodies in England are classified as being good ecological and chemical status. To tackle agricultural pollution, a range of on-farm mitigation measures are recommended. The overall aim of this study was to assess the effectiveness of cover cropping and reduced cultivation methods as infield mitigation measures to reduce diffuse water pollution, improve soil quality and reduce nitrous oxide greenhouse gas emissions. These mitigation measures were applied to seven fields within the intensive arable River Wensum

Conservation tillage is generally considered as an important component of sustainable agriculture. The benefits of conservation tillage have been presented as reducing runoff, enhancing water retention and preventing soil erosion. There is also general agreement that it can be used to conserve and enhance soil organic carbon levels to some extent. However, its applicability in mitigating climate change has been extensively debated, especially when the whole profile of carbon in soil is considered along with a reported risk of enhanced N2O emissions under conservation tillage.

MSCAGR (Soil Science)
Department of Soil Science
Soil resilience is the ability of a soil to recover its function or capacity after applied stress such as crusting. Some soils have high potential for recovery while others have poor resilience. Soils with poor resilience are much more vulnerable to degradation. Many soils in South Africa are susceptible to crust formation, which affects many soil surface properties and processes and hence productivity. The objectives of this study were to demonstrate how soil resilience to crust formation is affected by conventional tillage and conservati

Soil is an important ecosystem and at the same time filter and storage for water. With respect to flood and erosion prevention, it is important to improve water retention and infiltration rates in soils to reduce surface run-off. The aim of the study is to quantify the influence of biogenic macropores on infiltration. The effect of the cropping system and management practices on macropore density and infiltration rate was examined. Soil hydraulic conductivity was determined by soil column experiments and field investigations using a hood infiltrometer and rainfall-simulation experiments. Macr

Conservation tillage systems are increasingly adapted replacing conventional turnover moldboard plowing practices worldwide. This is part of a sustainable intensification of agriculture to meet future global food demand while at the same time sustaining environmental resources. The choice of tillage system affects soil structure and thereby also soil hydraulic properties (SHP) such as the water retention characteristic (WRC) and the hydraulic conductivity characteristic (HCC). Effects of agricultural management on SHP have been widely studied in the past decades. Thereby, temporal variations w

Long-term food security and environmental quality are closely linked to maintaining soil quality. Therefore, the assessment of the effect of agricultural management practices on soil chemical, physical and biological parameters provide fundamental information about sustainability. An agricultural management practice which has received much attention in the last decade is tillage. The loss of topsoil due to erosion and a reduction of soil organic matter under conventional tillage practices, together with escalating fuel prices, have lead to the increased implementation of conservation tillage p

Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI)
Long term no-till (NT) farming can improve the CH4 oxidation capacity of agricultural lands through creation of a favorable soil environment for methanotrophs and diffusive gas transport. However, limited data is available to evaluate the merit of that contention. Although the potential for biological CH4 oxidation may exist in NT soils, restricted diffusion could limit expression of that potential in fine-textured soils. A study was conducted to assess the CH4 oxidation potential and gaseous diffusivity of soils under plow till (PT)
