Abstract In the past decade, the data-driven physics-based interwell numerical simulator (INSIM) has shown to be an attractive alternative to high-fidelity simulators when developing full-scale reservoir models is not feasible for practical applications. However, INSIM-based models are currently constrained to water flooding simulations. In this study, we present a novel simulator, as referred to INSIM-3P, which considers three-phase flow (oil, water, and gas) in porous media based on the INSIM-based approach. With a given space domain and specified well trajectory, a certain number of imagina

Relative flow porosity is defined as the fraction of the void volume in a porous medium through which fluid can flow under a macroscopic pressure gradient. In saturated paper, much of the void volume is occupied by water that cannot flow due to chemical or physical absorption and mechanical obstruction (isolated or dead-end pores). In partially saturated paper, surface tension effects further hinder fluid flow through the sheet. In this paper, we discuss various methods for examining relative flow porosity and present results of new experimental techniques based on in-plane flow measurements.

Abstract Complexity in petrophysical interpretation in organic shales is related to the presence of inorganic and organic pores that house hydrocarbons, kerogen, and water. Advanced workflows were proposed for assessing hydrocarbon types and reservoir maturity. The water volume and saturation assessment are routinely done with archie equations, using resistivity, nuclear and/or sonic measurements. With proper matrix corrections on porosity computation and representative inputs of formation water salinity (Rw), wettability (N) and tortuosity (M), water saturation can be calculated. In organic s

The GRI (Gas Research Institute) technique for characterizing samples of unconventional reservoir formations is performed on crushed material, and typically used to measure the total porosity of unconventional reservoirs and to estimate their permeability. The addition of water and oil imbibition, NMR (Nuclear Magnetic Resonance), and SEM (Scanning Electron Microscope) imaging and image analysis allows an extension of that technique for the quantification of in situ pore fluid salinity, mineral hosted (water wet) and organic-matter hosted porosity (oil wet), and corrections to total porosity f

Abstract Controlling the reactivity of HCl is the most viable approach to successfully stimulate a high-temperature carbonate reservoir. It is essential to retard the HCl-carbonate rock reaction to achieve the optimum balance between total fluid used and enhancing well production. However, drawbacks intrinsic to the technology architectures have prevented the industry-wide adoption of these inventions. For instance, the conventional emulsified acid is well documented to exhibit high friction pressure, is cumbersome to prepare, and performance is sensitive to a multitude of parameters. The rece

Composite adsorbents synthesized from zeolite 13X and CaCl2 were investigated for applications in solar adsorption systems. The effect of Ca-ion-exchange on the adsorption properties of zeolite 13X was studied. Sodium ions in the zeolite structure were replaced by calcium ions by ion exchange. It was found that the Ca-ion-exchange process decreased the specific surface areas of the Ca-ion-exchanged zeolites while the total pore volumes were increased. The optimized Ca-ion-exchange condition existed when soaking zeolite 13X in 46wt% CaCl2 solution for 36 hours. The increase in the total pore vo

This study aims at analyzing process-induced pores in selective laser melting (SLM), a laser powder-bed fusion additive manufacturing (AM) process. Porosity is one of the most problematic defects in SLM parts; it impairs the part performance, and yet, is sharply sensitive to the parameters of the SLM process itself. Detailed analysis of SLM pore formations using a computed tomography (CT) technique is desired in order to understand the porosity level under different process conditions. In this study, an SLM system was used to fabricate samples, using Ti-6Al-4V powder, with single tracks formed
