This article argues that more emphasis should be paid to the communicative power of trade unionism because it may constitute a starting point or a privileged standpoint which a trade union may use to counter its weakness regarding its other sources of power. Reviewing the trade union revitalisation literature, it is argued that social movement theory in general and especially ‘political opportunity structure’, can complement and enrich the power resources approach which is a useful tool in the analysis of trade union action. It argues that the crisis is an artificial one, manufactured by an economic elite, in order to justify reform of pensions (and welfare more broadly) along neoliberal lines. This neoliberal construct of the crisis is supported by three discourses, that of ageing population, responsibility and affordability. These neoliberal discourses conceal the fact that the pension crisis is not only an artificial crisis, but indeed is a consequence of the implementation by government, in the past thirty years, of economic and welfare reform

Abstract:
Due to the lack of political consensus at the previous General Agreement on Trade on Services (GATS), negotiations on the temporary movement of natural persons (Mode 4) have stagnated. However the recent labour shortages in several labour intensive sectors, particularly agriculture, in Australia and New Zealand has recently provoked a serious debate over the implementation of policies that would facilitate the supply and employment of guest workers. This paper implements a CGE model of bilateral migration flows (GMig2) to quantify the benefits of liberalizing GATS Mode 4 in the Pacific region.

While the primary focus is to provide a comparison of the economies of Ireland and NI over recent years, we also examine changes over time to assess how relativities have evolved in recent years. It is important to recognise that the economies North and South on the island are distinct in i

Workers in Thailand were given the right to organize and the right to bargain collectively in 1972 when the ban imposed since 1958 was revoked. From the date the long-awaited freedom was allowed, thousands of industrial disputes occurred many of which culminated into work stoppages. Collective agreements concluded in the past were arbitrary and did not differentiate clearly as to labour's and management's rights and interests. The purpose of this study is to investigate whether representatives of most union and management in Thailand have become sophisticated enough to have their respective ri

Realities such as the COVID-19 pandemic have expedited the move to online operations, highlighting the undeniable fact that the world is continuing to go digital. This emphasises the need for policymakers to regulate in a manner that allows them to harness digital trade benefits while also avoiding associated risk. However, given that digital trade remains unco-ordinated globally, with countries adopting different approaches to policy issues, national regulatory divergence on the matter continues, placing limits on the benefits that countries can obtain from digital trade.
