Albania is a small country in Europe, which was under Turkish occupation for nearly five centuries. It did not regain its independence until 28 November 1912. During the occupation there was almost no foreign literature translated into Albanian, as more than 85% of the population were illiterate and in general there were no scientific institutions or schools. The first primary school was opened in 1887. Only in the 1920s, with the emergence of intelligentsia, world literature started to be translated into Albanian, which included Polish literature. Antonio Bruni, who until recently was completely unknown to historical scholarship, was an Albanian from the city of Ulcinj (now in Montenegro); the short treatise he wrote in 1596, which was also unknown, offers the first account of Albania by a named Albanian author. This essay begins with a summary account of Bruni’s life: the son of an Albanian member of the Knights of St John (of Malta), he studied in Rome and Avignon, spent some time working in Moldavia and then became an adviser to an exiled Moldavian ruler in Austria. His treatise was probably written for the benefit of a prominent member of the Papal administration in Rome. The whole text of his treatise is given here in translation, fully annotated. Written to advise on the possibility of an Albanian revolt during the Habsburg–Ottoman war, it discusses the ethnic and religious composition of Albania and other territories in the beylerbeylik (Ottoman province) of Rumeli, the social conditions there, and the security situation, especially the strength of local Ottoman forces. This text was a major influence on one of the most popular West European books about the Ottoman Empire, Lazaro Soranzo’s L’Ottomano (1598); this essay also demonstrates the degree of Soranzo’s indebtedness.

Abstract:
Muhammed Tayyip Okiç was born in 1902 in Gračanica, Tuzla, Bosnia. After completing his education at Okruzna Madrasa, Faculty of Islamic Law and Theology, he graduated from the University of Zagreb, Latin Language and Literature and the Faculty of Law in Belgrade. At the same time, he received his Arabic, Persian and Turkish Language and Literature degrees from Sorbonne University, Faculty of Letters, School of Oriental Languages. Although he completed his thesis titled Life, Works and Nizâmü’l-Ulema of Hasan Kâfî-i Bosnevî at this university, he could not use the PhD title because it was not published. Later, he completed his specialization in Arabic Language and Literature at Ez-Zitouna University in Tunisia. He worked as a professor at Belgrade University and taught in madrasas in Skopje. After the World War II, he came to Turkey and taught at Ankara University, Konya and Erzurum High Islamic Institutes between 1950-1977. He died on March 9, 1977 and his body was taken to Sarajevo and buried there. The most important of Tayyip Okiç’s works on Turkish culture and literature is his article about the translations of Süleyman Çelebi’s mevlid into various languages and especially its effects in the Balkans. It is also mentioned in this article that many mevlids were written in Bosnian and Albanian and recited in ceremonies held on various occasions, and he explains that Süleyman Çelebi’s mevlid is one of the mevlids recited in these meetings, giving examples from his own life. In this paper, the life of the author, Vesîletü’n-Necât translations, the authors who wrote mevlids in the Balkans, especially in Bosnia, and their works will be mentioned.

Abstract:
Love, respect and respect for our Prophet (pbuh) formed the cornerstone of the understanding of Muslims from the first days of Islam. The love of the Prophet, which adorned the personalities of the Ahl al-Bayt and the ashabı kiram, became a part of the religious, social and cultural life of the Muslims who came after them and took them as an example. Contrary to this, poetry, which is one of the best means of expressing love, has molded this love and caused it to spread to large masses of people. In the history of Islam, the love of the Prophet was especially emphasized in the Ottoman Empire, which was founded with spirituality and love. Mevlid is the product of this feeling and contemplation. Written by Suleyman Çelebi, the mevlid-i sharif with the title of “Vesîletü’n-Necât” is the one that spread and had the most influence in the Ottoman geography among many other mevlids. This mevlid-i sharif was also widely spread among the Albanians, who were a part of the Ottoman Empire and shared the Ottoman state and spirituality concept and made it a slogan, both with its original text, with its translation, and with specially written mevlids influenced by it. In this article, the mevlids written in Albanian will be emphasized and the influence of Süleyman Çelebi mevlid and the regions where it spread will be analyzed.
