Abstract:
Abstract This work offers an overview of trauma theory’s relations to biblical studies. In addition to summarizing the theoretical landscape(s), it provides exegetical forays into Ezekiel and, in part, Exodus and the Eucharist. The analysis will engage these materials’ traumatic ethoi, including their connections to trauma informed eating and queerings, so as to offer entryways into the wider critical conversation. While these exegetical foci may seem arbitrary, that is in part the point. As readers will see, trauma defies sense-making. Akin to postmodernist poststructuralist intertextualities, trauma cannot be flattened into neat narration. Trauma is capricious, leaving survivors to carry with them multivalent and even paradoxical connections to their experiences. This project thus attempts to perform trauma’s plurisignification as much as it tries to explain it, using a set of traditionally unexamined pairings to do so. While not an exhaustive survey on trauma theory and the Bible – such work could fill the space of multiple publications – the following work provides a representation of both the theory of trauma and its applications within the biblical field.

Abstract:
This essay aims to weave together Freud’s seemingly disparate discussions of the causes of and cures for trauma and attempts to unravel the significance of his contribution to the literature on trauma. Investigating the aetiology of hysteria, Freud discovers trauma, characterizing it as a psychic wound that persistently impacts the structure of the mind and explains the cure as the recovery of forgotten memory—along with the abreaction of the affect attached to it. Freud’s theoretical shift from “dissociation” to “repression” makes him underscore the idea of “working-through” as a pivotal part of psychoanalytic therapy, one that enables the subject to come to terms with repressed memory. War neuroses brought the concept of the repetition compulsion to his notice, leading him to develop the theory of the death drive, and he defines trauma as the ego’s defense against both endo- and exo-psychic dangers. He interprets the traumatic dream as a repeated attempt to master the traumatic situation with anxiety—a signal that prepares the subject for danger—the absence of which triggers traumatic neurosis. Later, this idea evolves into his suggestion that strengthening the patient’s ego empowers him to master the trauma that had previously overpowered him. Observing, however, that the ego defends itself against the process of recovery, just as it does against the threat of dangers, Freud uncovers the death drive underneath this resistance to recovery and envisages the asymptotic and incomplete process of the cure. Freud’s engagement with the issue of trauma presents several important points. The idea of strengthening the ego for therapeutic purposes echoes his early view of unpleasure as resulting from the ego’s lack of inhibition in the Project of Scientific Psychology, thus providing a thread of consistency in the seemingly discontinuous trajectory of his trauma theory. His emphasis on working-through highlights the importance of the subject’s active role in recovery, which may be disregarded in neuroscientific trauma studies. In historiography, the concept of working-through connotes the therapeutic process of persistently witnessing the truth of wounded individuals without closure. Freud’s account of the cooperation of the analyst and the patient may serve as a model for the “social space” in which a sympathetic listener bears witness to the testimony of the traumatized subject. Finally, the death drive that Freud excavates beneath the ego’s resistance to recovery evokes the concept of death as the ultimate danger to the ego, the mortality that the subject encounters in the course of his traumatic experience. Freud’s reflections on traumatic neurosis testify to his unflinching commitment to discerning the mechanisms and cures of trauma in the process of probing the psychic wounds of his patients.

Abstract:
Historical events, however terrible, are not in and of themselves traumatic.‎ For a trauma to emerge at the level of a collectivity, ‘social crises must become ‎cultural crises’ (Alexander et al., 2004, p. 10). For an historical event ‎to become a cultural trauma, it must be socially mediated and represented, a ‎trauma narrative must be constructed. Consequently, there is always a gap‎ between the traumatogenic event and its representation, this gap creates the‎ space for the ‘trauma process’. Unlike trauma theory, therefore, cultural trauma ‎places the weight of analysis not on the historical event as such but on the ‎narrative struggle that constitutes and sustains that event as a cultural trauma.‎ Thus, we have a series of interrelated terms: history, trauma, narrative and‎ memory, that pivot around an absent presence, a traumatogenic event. It is the‎ nature of that traumatogenic event that I explore in this paper. First, I will set ‎out my theoretical differences from trauma theory and then attempt to square‎ the circle between a non-pathological conception of trauma in cultural trauma‎ theory and my own commitment to psychoanalysis. In conclusion I will put‎ forward a number of claims that I hope will be consistent with cultural trauma‎ theory. That is to say, the traumatogenic event is not given but is retrospectively‎ constructed and in this sense is ahistorical and non-narrative.‎

Abstract:
Most literary trauma scholars have depended exclusively on the psychological theory of trauma, which was developed by Freud, and have interpreted trauma, from a homogenous and one-dimensional perspective, as unrepresentable, inherently pathological, timeless, repetitious, unknowable, and unspeakable. This traditional interpretation has served as a dominant, popular model of trauma. However, expanding beyond traditional, essentialist concepts of identity, experience, and remembering, trauma scholars are producing alternative, pluralistic theories of trauma. Given this, this paper first will introduce the traditional psychological model of trauma. To deepen and enrich the discussion of trauma beyond that of the disease-driven paradigm based on pathological essentialism, it will also introduce more recent, detailed, and sophisticated trauma theories. This study is expected to help us better understand the multifaceted functions and effects of traumatic experiences occurring at both the personal and the societal levels.

Abstract:
Trauma victimization has deleterious effects on both physical and mental health. In a non-pathologizing manner, betrayal trauma theory offers one paradigm that contextualizes abuse within the relationship it occurs. It is possible that trauma outcomes can be further explained through incorporating aspects of the larger sociocultural context. For instance, some members of minority populations may develop (intra)cultural trust with other perceived minority members; through functioning as a buffer against inequality, (intra)cultural trust may be similar to interpersonal trust within relationships insofar that it creates a vulnerability for betrayal that affects trauma sequelae. Given the incorporation of interpersonal and societal contexts of inequality, predicted outcomes of cultural betrayal trauma are diverse, including abuse outcomes, such as PTSD, and cultural outcomes, such as internalized prejudice. This framework for examining within-group violence in minority populations is called cultural betrayal trauma theory. In the dissertation, I first provide a review of psychological theories of trauma: the fear paradigm, the shattered assumptions paradigm, betrayal trauma theory, and institutional betrayal. I then briefly detail the trauma literature on ethnic minorities, with an emphasis on the importance of contextual factors. Based on this literature, I introduce cultural betrayal trauma theory, defining the theory and its constructs: societal trauma, (intra)cultural trust, cultural betrayal, cultural betrayal trauma, (intra)cultural pressure, cultural betrayal unawareness, abuse outcomes, and cultural outcomes. After addressing societal trauma’s potential role in both within-group and between-group violence victimization in minority populations, I detail the purpose of the empirical study: to test cultural betrayal trauma theory in a sample of ethnic minority students attending a predominantly White university. I report the online survey results based on 296 ethnic minority undergraduates at a predominantly White university. Over half of the sample reported trauma victimization, with 43% of participants reporting within-group violence victimization specifically. This ethno-cultural betrayal trauma was associated with abuse outcomes— dissociation, hallucinations, PTSD, cultural betrayal unawareness, and hypervigilance—and cultural outcomes—trauma-related ethnic identity change, diverse identity changes, internalized prejudice, and (intra)cultural pressure. The dissertation suggests that cultural betrayal trauma theory is a useful framework in examining and understanding trauma sequelae in minority populations.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The dissertation argues that depictions of cultural trauma in literature are a natural progression from depictions of individual trauma by tracing the development of trauma studies from its roots in Freudian psychoanalysis to its current position as an interdisciplinary field of study. It accomplishes this by focusing on one symptom of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, a tendency to perceive illusory patterns - patterns that do not really exist, such as conspiracy theories - in response to feelings of helplessness that stem from a traumatic event. This study contends that depictions of illusory pattern perceptions, while they may initially suggest a simple and definitive answer to healing from the traumatic event if the individual can fully grasp the pattern and get others to see it, actually demonstrate an extension of the trauma by forcing the individual to continuously relive it. Through the use of poetry, fiction, film, and graphic novels from three lingering national crises - a chapter each for the Kennedy assassination, the Vietnam War, and 9/11 - this study demonstrates that the perception of an illusory pattern is a simplistic attempt to deal with the ramifications of a traumatic event which must be dismissed in favor of embracing the complexities of the trauma in order to move beyond it. Finally, in the conclusion this study argues that depictions of memorials in literature can serve as a positive alternative to the destructive force of illusory pattern perception.

This dissertation presents an etiological model for pathological dissociation based on attachment theory. From this perspective, attachment and intersubjective disorganization processes may be considered a hidden trauma . The new ideas from intersubjectivity theory and research has widened the scope of attachment theory. This widened version of attachment theory stresses the central role of intersubjective processes, not only in the organization of the attachment system, but also in the organization of the self. Longitudinal prospective studies show a remarkable relation between infant disorganized attachment and pathological dissociation in young adults. The results from these studies, analyzed from an attachment theory perspective, support a proposition for redefinition of early trauma. Current studies suggest that the stress generated by subtle parent-infant disruptive affective communication mechanisms may give rise to disorganization processes that affect the development of the attachment system and of the self. Such processes may be the beginning of a developmental trajectory towards pathological dissociation.

Burgin, Erica. "Embodied Culture: An Exploration of Irish Dance through Trauma Theory." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2011. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/2640.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines traditional Irish dance as a locus of cultural memory, inscribed on the body. The native people of Ireland experienced invasion and oppression for nearly a millennium, beginning with Viking invasions at the end of the 8th century and ending in the 1940s, when the British finally departed Ireland, now an independent country. During the years of English rule, the British imposed harsh laws and sought to eradicate all vestiges of Irish culture in an attempt to diminish Irish identity. Through the ages, the definition of what it means to be Irish has changed widely, frequently resulting in revolt against invaders and internal armed conflicts. Physical alterations of the Irish body also occurred, though in a more representational context than a literal one. Traditional Irish dance grappled with how to present the Irish body, endeavoring to use it in way that overcame the cultural traumas of invasion and suppression. When Ireland began reclaiming its identity in the twentieth century, it soon became clear that dance had been profoundly affected by the traumatic oppression. Interestingly, the emerging dance form that became codified as distinctively Irish dance both reflects the history of suppression and seems to repeat the oppression, as if the living body were caught up in traumatic repetition. Traumatic experiences have shaped the collective and individual Irish bodies, and dance performance highlights a culture that is continually repeating its oppressive past in an attempt to find a cure from that traumatic heritage. By examining the solo dance tradition, Irish dance becomes a fertile field for studying the qualities of an embodied dance form that, in this case, performs a cultural history marked by oppression and traumatic repetition. As developed under the Gaelic League and the Irish Dancing Commission, traditional Irish dance reflected a rather proscribed art form, meant to specifically embody certain qualities of "Irishness." Looking back to pre-invasion Ireland, they intended to display the distinct, pure Irish identity of the past; instead, they continued the pattern of control and suppression. However, Ireland and Irish dance have grown beyond those early structures of traumatic repetition. In 1994, Riverdance grabbed worldwide attention as it presented Irish dance in a new context, with movements that broke from proscribed forms and expressed a non-traumatic Irish identity. Riverdance and the ensuing global craze for Ireland demonstrate a cultural artifact that has successfully stepped from the past into the dynamic present. While still acknowledging and preserving its original roots, the traumas of the past have been healed through embodied representation.

In this thesis, a semi-autobiographical manga, Hadashi no Gen, written by Nakazawa Keiji, is analyzed through the lens of trauma theory. By using trauma theory, I hope to shed light on in what way trauma might affect narrative techniques and in what way the narrative techniques convey trauma and emotion to the reader. For the analysis “Trauma Fiction” by Anne Whitehead was chosen and categories based on her findings were made. The categories are: Intertextuality, repetition, dispersed and fragmented narrative voice, memory place, choiceless choice and fantastic. I discovered that all these themes, observed in other trauma fiction as well, are more or less used as a narrative tool in Hadashi no Gen. Further I observed that by conveying traumatic events and emotions through a combination of images and language is a powerful tool and might even be more effective than standard prose text

Justus, Michelle. "Patriarchal Trauma in Appalachian Literature." UKnowledge, 2016. http://uknowledge.uky.edu/english_etds/40.

Full text
Abstract:
Patriarchal Trauma in Appalachian Literature examines the effects of subjugation on women as it is represented in three novels set in Appalachia. I define patriarchal trauma as an act causing mental anguish to a woman and perpetrated against her because she is a woman. I use the term to encompass violent, catastrophic harms but more particularly to pinpoint the traumatic effects of the quotidian, systemic deprivation of women’s autonomy. Reconsidering classic texts such as James Still’s River of Earth and Robert Morgan’s Gap Creek: The Story of a Marriage as narratives of women’s trauma establishes a lineage on the subject, which culminates in Lee Smith’s more recent Guests on Earth. This project eschews authenticity as an analytical tool, turning instead to modes of argument in feminism’s toolkit to delineate the potentially grim outcomes for women whose agency is constricted or usurped. While patriarchal control mechanisms such as domestic violence and sexual abuse inflict readily observable injuries on women, I argue that common, everyday subordination to men can exact a similar emotional toll, especially on women who strenuously defy male dominance. These traumatic states, I further contend, have previously been read as inevitable acquiescence or a genuine desire for subjugation in River and Gap Creek, respectively, while experiences of trauma in Guests are directly portrayed as mistaken interpretations of madness. Reassessing women characters’ numb, compliant, depressed, or enraged emotions as responses to patriarchal trauma challenges the practice of pathologizing women’s rebellion.

Abstract:
The aim of this study is to analyze the causes of experiencing the feeling of loneliness from the perspective of the theory of psychic trauma. This paper is an analytical synthesis of the consequences of psychic trauma, among which is the feeling of loneliness with a clearly negative connotation. Synthesizing scientists' concerns in loneliness and psychotraumatology can be brought to a common denominator: when secure attachments between parents-children are severely disturbed, children experience an emotional chaos called - attachment trauma, which affects the psyche so that it is impossible to build healthy relationships of subsequent attachment, which is actually the feeling of loneliness. These children becoming adults spend their lives constantly looking for intimate connections with others, who did not have them with their parents, but who are doomed to failure with great disappointment. The situation can only be overcome by a psychotherapeutic process on attachment trauma.

Abstract:
"The paper discusses whether the psychoanalytic concept of Cumulative Trauma could be a valuable theoretical contribution in understanding possible traumatization’s of children in the course of the Covid-19 pandemic, as they may quite often face a multiple stressed parent during a lockdown, who’s parental function is on the verge breaching. This concept of trauma as established by British Psychoanalyst Masud Khan in 1963 was hardly taken into account in recent trauma research and it has seen little discussion in psychodynamic literature; if at all, it has been used as a merely descriptive category, without considering the suspension of the parental care function, which was identified as the decisive traumatogenic factor for the child’s traumatization. The paper begins with a recapitulation of the original theory and then moves on to linking the Cumulative Trauma to current research contexts (attachment, mentalization, developmental trauma disorder). Finally, the relevance of the concept for parenting in times of the Covid-19 pandemic is explored on the basis of a short clinical case example."

Abstract:
The prerequisites for this study are criticism of postmodernism by theorists and philosophers of culture, and the actualisation of metamodernism as one of the most popular theories of postmodernism. The relevance of the study is determined by the appearance of a ‘new sensitivity’ having arisen from geopolitical events of the 2000s. Metamodernism theory authors declare the new structure of sensation to be different from the dominants of postmodernism and modernism. The article describes the transformation of the representation of cultural traumas in public discourse with the consideration of ideas of metamodernism and a new frankness. The article covers the methodological capabilities for using postmodernism and metamodernism discourses for analysing the principles of representation of cultural trauma within public discourse. Distinguishing features of new frankness are highlighted. Immortal Regiment action is analysed as an example of actualisation of personal experience and family history in public discourse. The concept of ‘new frankness’ increases the role and significance of the witness. The examples of works of contemporary mass culture and media resources are used to trace the actualisation of the witness’s narrative of cultural trauma. Warmth, depth, and affect, characteristic of metamodernism, actualise the demand for plausibility and personal experience of an event. An indirect effect of these hypotheses consists in that narratives on cultural trauma are multivariate as manifested in criticism of the conventional image of a historic event. Re-evaluating historical events from different points of view triggers mechanisms of latent trauma, potentially making almost any historical event a cultural trauma. The study resulted in the revelation of accentuation of sensitivity in narratives of cultural traumas, as opposed to manners prevailing in modernism and postmodernism discourses, i.e. practices of stigmatisation, suppression, and the commodification of cultural traumas.

Abstract:
Micro-scale investigations of the flow and deformation of blood and its formed elements have been studied for many years. Early in vitro investigations in the rotational viscometers or small glass tubes revealed important rheological properties such as the reduced blood apparent viscosity, Fahraeus effect and Fahraeus-Lindqvist effect [1], exhibiting the nonhomogeneous property of blood in microcirculation. We have applied Mixture Theory, also known as Theory of Interacting Continua, to study and model this property of blood [2, 3]. This approach holds great promise for predicting the trafficking of RBCs in micro-scale flows (such as the depletion layer near the wall), andother unique hemorheological phenomena relevant to blood trauma. The blood is assumed to be composed of an RBC component modeled as a nonlinear fluid, suspended in plasma, modeled as a linearly viscous fluid.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT Although in Bulgaria there is a sub-law from the Law of Tourism regulating the security and safety of the users of the ski slopes in Bulgaria, not enough attention is paid to the point of view of reasons for the accidents, feedback, and prevention of injuries in the snow sports. Another argument underlying the relevance of the topic is the more frequent intervention of experts in snow sports from NSA “Vassil Levski”, which has been invited as an experts in the preparation of sports-technical expertise for occurred accidents on the slopes. This study aims to research the type of accidents and traumas in ski zone Borovets for 2019/ 2020 year on various indications – an hour of occurrence of the trauma, slope complexity, type of the trauma, and type of ski or snowboard equipment. The tasks reviewed as determine the type of trauma with ski and snowboarding. Methods used: frequency analysis, analysis of documents, comparative analysis. Summary of results: the total number of accidents on the slopes of ski zone Borovets for season 2019/2020 is 455. The skiing accidents are nearly 8 times as many as the snowboarding ones. We distributed the traumas into four sub-groups: head, body, legs, and arms. It appeared that the biggest number of traumas is the ones of the legs, followed by those of the arms. In slope accidents, the most common trauma is on the knee joints, followed by shoulder and lower leg injuries. From those traumas, we reviewed the most severe traumas – the fractures. The most registered fractures are the ones of the lower leg and the collarbones. Conclusions: Borovets is in second place in incidents in Bulgaria for the period. The highest percent of the traumas are the ones of the lower limbs, registered in the alpine ski. The incidents occur mainly on blue slopes.

Full text
Abstract:
Violent extremism has a trauma problem. Psychological trauma plays a role in the genesis, perpetration, and resolution of violent extremism. Despite evidence attesting to the positive effects of trauma-informed rehabilitation programs and trauma recovery support for armed combatants and criminal offenders, there has been limited donor interest or coordinated policy effort to meaningfully integrate trauma recovery into the design of rehabilitation and reintegration of violent extremists specifically. Research in global mental health confirms trauma is not only relevant to the emergence of violent extremism but is also a consequence of participation in violent extremism. While there is a general dearth of data on the psychobiological markers of trauma among extremist populations specifically, the limited data we have from child recruits, as well as from other conflict-affected populations calls for a more prominent role of psychological rehabilitation and trauma recovery in the reintegration of violent extremists.

Abstract:
This chapter explores the role of trauma in violent extremism research, offering insights on its effects on the research process, providing insights on the radicalization process of individual cases, and informing reintegration prospects of returning foreign fighters and their family members. The chapter focuses on war-related trauma as a widespread experience in post-conflict societies, which may persist years after the war ends, scarring societies in numerous ways for generations and potentially creating an ongoing cycle of violence. The chapter begins with a brief overview of the available literature on the link between trauma and radicalization while bringing attention to existing gaps within this field. It then continues with insights from field research in Kosovo on how trauma was expressed among the family members of foreign fighters, including women returnees from the conflict zones in Syria and Iraq, and provides insight into how the author approached the subject in her own research.

Full text
Abstract:
Healing justice is a political organising framework that aims to address the systemic causes of injustice experienced by marginalised peoples due to the harmful impacts of oppressive histories, intergenerational trauma, and structural violence. It recognises that these damaging factors generate collective trauma, which manifests in negative physical, mental–emotional, and spiritual effects in activists and in the functioning of their movements. Healing justice integrates collective healing in political organising processes, and is contextualised as appropriate to situational needs. This provided the rationale for a research study to explore the potential of healing justice for feminist activists in Africa, and how pathways to collective healing could be supported in specific contexts. Research teams in DRC, Senegal, and South Africa conducted interviews with feminist activists and healers, in addition to supplementary interviews across sub-regions of Africa and two learning events with wider stakeholders.

Abstract:
Every year, countless people become victims of human trafficking. The number is countless because the vast majority of those cases go unidentified and unreported. As a result, victims remain invisible, go unsupported, continue to suffer abuses, and continue to face stigma and trauma even after finding their way out of trafficking. This lack of visibility also makes it difficult to really understand how trafficking works, which seriously hinders international counter trafficking efforts.

Full text
Abstract:
Mesenteric pseudocyst (MP) is a rare heterogeneous group of intra-abdominal benign cystic lesions with different etiopathogenesis and clinically silent behaviours. These lesions are introduced as one of the entities based on the histological features of thick fibrous cyst walls, barren of the epithelial lining. Often, they present as expanding abdominal masses or are diagnosed incidentally in conventional radiological studies, exploratory laparotomies, or with symptoms of complications such as infection, torsion, or rupture. Surgical removal of the cyst, with or without resection of the affected intestinal segment, is the treatment of choice. Depending upon the size and location of the lesion and related complications, it can be managed by open surgical procedures or laparoscopic approach. Only a handful of 7 cases of traumatic mesenteric cysts have been reported yet in the vicinity of blunt abdominal trauma. We report a rare incidentally detected case of mesenteric pseudocyst (traumatic) in a male of early 20s with a history of blunt abdominal trauma 13 months back and for which serial abdominal exploratory laparotomies were performed. A brief review of the literature is provided, conforming to the rarity of the case. This case highlights the role of histomorphology in diagnosing a benign cystic entity with accuracy, that could be misdiagnosed as infectious granulomatous lesion.

Abstract:
In California, bike fatalities increased by 8.1% from 2015 to 2016. Even though the benefits of wearing helmets in protecting cyclists against trauma in cycling crash has been determined, the use of helmets is still limited, and there is opposition against mandatory helmet use, particularly for adults. Therefore, exploring perceptions of adult cyclists regarding mandatory helmet use is a key element in understanding cyclists’ behavior, and determining the impact of mandatory helmet use on their cycling rate. The goal of this research is to identify sociodemographic characteristics and cycling behaviors that are associated with the use and non-use of bicycle helmets among adults, and to assess if the enforcement of a bicycle helmet law will result in a change in cycling rates. This research develops hybrid machine learning models to pinpoint the driving factors that explain adult cyclists’ behavior regarding helmet use laws.

Abstract:
This CREID Policy Briefing provides recommendations to address the marginalisation, discrimination and exclusion faced by Yazidi women in Bashiqa and Bahzani. Yazidi women in Bashiqa and Bahzani today are still living through the trauma and consequences of the genocide committed by the Islamic State (ISIS). In addition, they face a range of further challenges as marginalised women from a minority religion. While more Yazidi girls and young women are progressing in education, harmful social norms, customs and practices – originating from both wider Iraqi society and the Yazidi community itself – create barriers for Yazidi women who want or need to work outside of the home, access healthcare or engage in public life. Widows and divorced women face specific challenges as they are seen as without male protection. Yazidi women also face the stigma that comes from being a former captive of ISIS, and the discrimination that comes from being judged an “infidel” due to their religion.

Abstract:
Review question / Objective: This review aims to explore resilience in the context of autistic adults. To fulfil this aim, the review has the following objectives: • To explore how adults with autism experience and perceive their resilience. • To identify how empirical research has defined and measured resilience in populations of adults with autism. • To identify how resilience in autistic adults can be understood in terms of the resilience process. • To identify factors that can support the resilience of adults with autism. Condition being studied: Autism is a lifelong neurodevelopmental condition that has core features of intense interests, affective and social interaction difficulties, and a preference for repetitive behaviours (American Psychiatric Association, 2013). Resilience has been defined as an outcome, and/or a process through which people use resources to adapt positively to adversity, stress, or trauma (Windle, 2011).
