Abstract:
In the United States, responsibility and authorization for Vocational Education and Training (VET) rests overwhelmingly with individual state and local governments, not the federal government. As a result, the organization and delivery of VET programs varies significantly. Over the past two decades, VET in America has undergone a significant makeover including the new name Career and Technical Education (CTE), fewer students concentrating on CTE in secondary schools, and increased emphasis on post-compulsory education. Administrators who opt to provide education programs in prison are faced with the need to structure programs that span primary, secondary, and postsecondary levels. There seems to be consensus in the United States that prison education programs can properly include literacy, vocational education, and life-skill programs. However, this agreement doesn't extend to college programs. Prison college programs have a long history in the United States but their acceptability has ebbed and flowed over the years. Support of college programs in prison peaked in the 1960s and 70s, but became less popular

Chapter 5 examines nine speeches that the Warings delivered from February 11 to April 30, 1950, beginning with Waring’s appearance on Meet the Press when she proclaimed that interracial marriage should not be illegal. The maelstrom surged. In the other speeches, the Warings repeated the same points and argument. First, they pointed out the hypocrisy of racial violence, discrimination, and disenfranchisement in the United States when the nation promoted itself as leader of the “free world” to attract decolonized territories. Second, the Warings called gradualism a false god and insisted that on

In this chapter, I shall try to advance our thinking about college and university education in the United States through a critical study of contemporary conceptions of the academic vocation. Current reflection upon the state of higher learning in America makes this task at once more urgent and more difficult than it has ever been since the rise of the modern research university. Consider, for example, former Harvard President Derek Bok’s 1986–87 report to the Harvard Board of Overseers.
