Platts, Emma. "Phase planes in the universe : chaotic cyclic universes and kicking Chameleons." Master's thesis, University of Cape Town, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/20520.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis consists of two main sections: chaotic cyclic cosmology and Chameleon gravity in the early universe. Both sections invoke a phase plane analysis as their commonality. The first explores a cyclic model, proposed by Ellis et al, that is in keeping with current observations. No exotic nor new physics is needed for the bounce nor the turnaround. The model is chaotic in nature and requires only that the universe is closed and that dark energy (at some time) decays. The second section contests the claim by Burrage et al. that Chameleon gravity is inconsistent in the early universe, unles

The motivation of this study is the eventual application to calculating braneworld cosmological perturbations in order to determine observational signatures for the existence of extra dimensions. First, we construct five-dimensional bulk spacetime solutions, empty except for a negative cosmological constant, in the absence of any cosmological perturbations. Taking a higher-dimensional variant of Birkoff’s theorem, we find anti-de Sitter bulk solutions to the five-dimensional Einstein equations exhibiting three-dimensional spatial homogeneity and isotropy. We introduce branes as spacetime traje

It has been shown that the cosmic censorship conjecture holds for polarized Gowdy spacetimes. In the more general, unpolarized case, however, the question remains open. It is known that cylindrically symmetric dust can collapse to form a naked singularity. Since Gowdy universes comprise gravitational waves that are locally cylindrically symmetric, perhaps these waves can collapse onto a symmetry axis and create a naked singularity. It is known that in the case of cylindrical symmetry, event horizons will not form under gravitational collapse, so the formation of a singularity on the symmetry a
