Abstract:
There is paucity of information on the antioxidant role of uric acid in the management of diabetic stress. This study seeks to elucidate the antioxidant usefulness of uric acid in type-2 diabetes mellitus patients visiting the Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital, Irrua and Ekpoma environs of Edo state, Nigeria. Serum uric acid concentration was estimated in one hundred (100) subjects comprising of sixty (60) type 2 diabetic patients (30 males and 30 females) and forty (40) non-diabetic subjects (20 males and 20 females) using the enzymatic method (uricase). Of the MDT group, 10 subjects were paucibacillary (PB) lepers and 21 multibacillary (MB) lepers. The prevalence rates of chronic hepatic and renal diseases are increasing globally. Unhealthy lifestyle is a major contributor to the increasing prevalence rates. Due to the asymptomatic nature of these diseases at the early stages, diagnosis is not made early. Most studies have focused on study participants already diagnosed of these diseases; it is therefore imperative to carry out this study on apparently healthy undergraduate students who were predominantly adolescents with the view to identifying individuals at risk of these diseases. Over the last years, scientific research has focused its interest on a potential role of hyperuricemia as cardiovascular risk factor; main interest has been directed to persistent raised plasma levels of uric acid. Although some studies have not shown a close correlation between hyperuricemia and cardiovascular risk, most scientific evidence agrees that hyperuricemia plays a key role in determining cardiovascular events and in development of other risk factors often associated with only moderately increased serum uric acid levels. Pathophysiological mechanism underlying this association mainly

Asymptomatic hyperuricemia is frequently observed in patients with kidney disease. Although a substantial number of epidemiologic studies have suggested that an elevated uric acid level plays a causative role in the development and progression of kidney disease, whether hyperuricemia is simply a result of decreased renal excretion of uric acid or is a contributor to kidney disease remains a matter of debate. Over the last two decades, multiple experimental studies have expanded the knowledge of the biological effects of uric acid beyond its role in gout. In particular, uric acid induces immune

Uric acid diathesis is a disease characterized by metabolic disorders and subsequently leads to precipitation of protein metabolism products of nucleoproteins - uric acid and urates (uric acid salts), which are normally in a dissolved state, from the urine. Uric acid diathesis can be a hereditary pathology and be the result of insufficient or absent certain enzymes, or it can be a consequence of a previous disease, such as: liver disease, pancreas, pyelonephritis, cystitis.
