Abstract:
Urogenital tuberculosis is caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis, which evokes a granulomatous tissue reaction leading to caseous necrosis, fibrosis, and eventual calcification. It most commonly presents as cystitis with sterile pyuria but can show many other symptoms and signs requiring a high index of suspicion to make the diagnosis. Schistosomiasis (Bilharzia) affecting the urinary tract is caused by the flatworm Schistosoma haematobium. Humans are infested by contact with fresh water harbouring the intermediate snail host. Echinococcosis (hydatid disease), is caused by the tapeworm Echinoco

Abstract:
The realization of the harms resulting from indiscriminate use of antibiotics for minor infection has added impetus to the need to understand better the interaction between urogenital tract epithelium and invading bacteria during the initial stages of urinary tract infection (UTI). It is thought that uropathogenic Escherichia coli clones develop in the gut and migrate across the perineum to the urethra and up into the bladder. The response of the epithelium to bacterial adherence and the evolution of the invading bacteria will then govern the clinical consequences. These can vary between rapid

Abstract:
Anaphylaxis is an acute multisystem process resulting from allergic or nonallergic reactions to a foreign substance in the body. Regardless of trigger or pathophysiology, the mainstay of treatment is epinephrine. Common triggers of anaphylaxis in children undergoing anesthesia are latex, neuromuscular blocking agents, and antibiotics. Risk factors for latex sensitivity include frequent catheterization of the urogenital tract, atopic conditions, and mastocytosis. Presentation of anaphylaxis during anesthesia can be subtle or sudden, and cutaneous signs may be obscured by surgical drapes. A high

Abstract:
The Mycoplasma species Ureaplasma parvum and Ureaplasma urealyticum colonize the human adult urogenital tract and are not typically associated with disease. Perinatal transmission, however, has been implicated in the pathogenesis of preterm birth, chorioamnionitis, and other complications of extreme prematurity, including neonatal pneumonitis, bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD), meningitis, and necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC). This chapter reviews the biology of these organisms. Epidemiologic and experimental evidence supporting a role for ureaplasmas in the pathogenesis of neonatal disease, cli

Abstract:
The assessment of men with fertility problems is described in this chapter. The main causes of male infertility are testicular insufficiency due to congenital and acquired causes, obstructions of the male genital tract, genetic and endocrine abnormalities, urogenital infections, and varicoceles. Lifestyle can also have a negative influence on semen quality: smoking, obesity, drugs, and anabolic steroids influence sperm parameters and may reduce natural conception. Some chronic diseases also have a negative influence on fertility. History taking and physical examination should focus on prevalen
