Abstract:
This research analyzed the effect of processing (boiling and roasting) on the proximate, antinutrient, and mineral composition of Vigna subterranea seeds. The proximate composition analysis showed significant difference (P<0.05) between the levels of crude lipid, crude fiber, gross energy, carbohydrate, and moisture content in the raw and processed V. subterranea. However, no significant difference (P<0.05) was observed in protein content of processed V. subterranea as compared to the raw seeds. Analyses of antinutrient composition show that processing significantly reduced the levels of

This study aims to investigate the nutritional composition of two underutilized leguminous crops, namely Treculia africana and Vigna subterranea seeds, collected from Kogi state, Nigeria. The study analysed their proximate composition, mineral content, and amino acid profile using standard analytical methods. Additionally, the chemical composition of the sample was determined using gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy. The results showed that there were significant differences (P≤0.05) in the legume samples. However, V. subterranea seeds had the least moisture content (12.90±0.81 %) as well as

Soil-borne potato viruses are an increasing economic threat to crop yield in the future. Potato mop-top virus (PMTV) and Tobacco rattle virus (TRV) and their vector association in field infection in North-western region of Pakistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir were surveyed in this study. Incidence and distribution of these soil-borne viruses were estimated by field sample collection from Malakand and Hazara divisions of KPK and selected areas of Azad Kashmir. PMTV incidence was 22% in Malakand (highest of 40% in Swat II and Swat V), 24% in Hazara (highest 50% in Galliyat), and 23% from selected

Mulberry silkworm is a monophagous insect that derives all its nutritional needs from mulberry leaves. Thus, nutrition plays an important role in the growth and development of silkworm which ultimately impacts the economic traits. The present study evaluated the effect of less utilized specie in Vigna genera (Vigna subterranea) on rearing performance and cocoon traits of mulberry silkworm (Race: AC1 × AJ1). Aqueous solution of V. subterranean seed powder supplemented leaves at 2.5%, 5.0%, 7.5%, and 10% were fed to the fifth instar larvae while the control was treated with just water. The exper

SUMMARYThe genus Vigna includes seven species of pulse, two African and five Asian. While the Asian species are within the subgenus Ceratotropis, the two African species are in different sections of the subgenus Vigna, namely Catjang (V. unguiculata) and Vigna (V. subterranea). Limited gene flow is possible within subgenus Ceratotropis, but none has as yet been demonstrated between subgenera nor between sections within subgenus Vigna. Parallel evolutionary trends are apparent in all species, with considerable increase in seed and pod size. Erect bush forms have evolved in all cultigens except

Random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) markers were used to assess genetic diversity in Bambara groundnut (Vigna subterranea L.) germplasm using 25 African accessions from the collection in the International Institute for Tropical Agriculture, Ibadan, Nigeria. Fifty random decamer primers were screened to assess their ability to detect polymorphism in bambara; 17 of them were selected for this study. Considerable genetic diversity was found among the V. subterranea accessions studied. The relationships among the 25 accessions were studied by cluster analysis. The dendrograms showed two main g

Allelopathic effects of the donor plants are mostly regarded as harmful to target plants such as traditional crops. Traditional crops play pivotal role as staple food for rural communities and hence ensuring food security.
