There is an increasing interest in multiphase flows in large diameter vertical pipes (typically with diameters greater that 100 mm) in the context of hydrocarbon production systems. There are strong indications that flows in such pipes differ greatly from those in smaller diameter pipes on which most of the prediction methodologies are based. This thesis presents an investigation on the churn to annular flow pattern boundary in an 11 m tall, 127 mm id vertical riser. Experimental data on film thickness, pressure drop and drop size and velocity was analysed and interpreted. Entrained fraction, interfacial and wall shear stresses and the interfacial friction were calculated from the experimental data. A counter current annular flow experiment was performed to determine flooding conditions for varying degrees of subcooling using steam and water. The findings can be used in reactor safety codes to provide an improved model of flooding during accident analysis.
