Abstract This paper builds and tests a model of marriage as an incomplete contract that arises from asymmetric virginity premiums and examines whether this can lead to social inefficiencies. Contrary to the efficient households hypothesis, women cannot prevent being appropriated by men once they enter marriage if they command lower marriage market opportunities upon divorce. Because men cannot or do not commit to compensating women for their lower ex post marriage market opportunities, marriage is an incomplete contract. Men may seek to lower women’s ex ante “market wages” in order to induce e

This thesis aims to investigate varieties of committed female virginity, beginning with the suggestion that virginity may be a gendered identity distinct from womanhood. It argues that virginity, as a means by which medieval women can access holiness and evade some aspects of their subordination, has often been neglected by critics in favour of forms of gendered piety which exploit the particular qualities of the medieval female body. Both medieval theology and post-modern gender theory support the claim that the virginal body may be produced in the process of performing a virginal identity. T

Abstract:
A two-dimensional discrete mass tire model has been developed at the Advanced Vehicle Dynamics Laboratory (AVDL) at Virginia Tech to study the behavior of a tire during a transient regime such as when traversing over uneven rigid terrain (or obstacles). The accuracy of the tire model depends on the model parameters used. In this paper, the method for parameter identification using the Performance Engineering Research Laboratory (PERL) quarter car tire test rig is presented. Moreover, several experiments were conducted by using the portable tire test rig from the Intelligent Transportation Labo

Both towing tank experiments and wedge drop experiments are used to experimentally study slamming events on planning craft. The work presented in this paper shows a unique comparison between these two experiments. The first experiment was a towing tank test of a rigid hull in waves conducted at the U.S. Naval Academy. The second experiment was a series of free-falling water entry tests on a wedge conducted at Virginia Tech. In this paper, comparisons are drawn between the two experiments by using non-dimensional analysis and isolating similar slamming events. The non-dimensional impact velocit

Abstract:
A timed lube oil injection system was developed for a field engine to improve power cylinder lubrication. The injection system used advanced prototype electronic injectors. The system was installed on a Cooper GMVA-10 located in West Virginia. A total of four cylinders were included in the study, two for the timed system and two for the baseline mechanical system. Cylinder wall lubrication, cylinder wear, piston wear, and ring wear tests were planned for various engine run times. The prototype timed lube oil system operated essentially until the prototype injector end-of-life was reached at ab

Abstract:
Cold in-place recycling (CIR) involves the recycling of the asphalt portions (including hot-mix asphalt and chip, slurry, and cape seals, as well as others) of a flexible or composite pavement with asphalt emulsion or foamed asphalt as the binding agent. Full-depth reclamation (FDR) includes the recycling of the entire depth of the pavement and, in some cases, a portion of the subgrade with asphalt, cement, or lime products as binding agents. Both processes are extensively utilized in Illinois. This project reviewed CIR and FDR projects identified by the Illinois Department of Transportation (
