Elizabeth Gaskell was a gifted storyteller. Her letters and her fiction attest to an imagination rooted in oral narrative, marked by the digressiveness and dispersiveness of living speech. She wrote her first novel, she said, as if she were "speaking to a friend over the fire on a winter's night," and the dynamic of telling and listening, the model of the oral narrative act, is paradigmatic of her own narrative. The incorporation of a listener's response into the telling of her story has both formal and semantic implications in Gaskell's fiction. It leads to what one critic has called that "co

For adult learners of a second language, the similarities and differences in acoustic properties between their native language and the language they are learning can affect how they perceive the sounds of the new language. How learners perceive these acoustic properties will directly affect their ability to communicate. According to the Perceptual Assimilation Model (PAM) (Best 1995), learners will perceive the sounds of a language that is new to them based on how similar or different the sounds are from the learner’s native language. Abstract:
This thesis reflects the voices of 9 to 10 year-old primary school children in Iran and England. The findings were collected from 81 Iranian pupils within five single-sex primary classrooms and 41 English pupils in two primary classrooms. It aimed to deepen understanding of the concepts as well as to have a better reflection on my findings in Iran. In order to listen to the voices of
