Creating artworks, especially, painting have undergone a lot of changes overtime. Over the years, artists have adopted different styles and techniques in creating painting using different materials. Most of the inspirations for creating the work are gathered from their immediate environment. This paper discusses how cave walls, rocks, animal skins, animal horns and bones became surfaces on which drawings and paintings were depicted. It also notes how assorted papers, canvases, walls, wood, metal panels and many others have become surfaces used by contemporary artists in creating paintings. In

Literati mural painting, due to its fragility, exists only in Song accounts, colophons, and poems. Building on the pioneering research of Maggie Bickford, Susan Bush, and others, this paper synthesizes their interpretations, elucidates the distinctness of literati mural practices, and sheds new light on cross-medium connections in literati paintings. Abstract How can visual texts, closed books, and painted images work together in Buddhist temples to reinforce one another and act upon viewers? The fourteenth-century murals at the Tibetan temple of Shalu integrate pictures with long passages of Tibetan texts and select inscriptions that explain the powers of seeing paintings. The murals combine and mix media—books, paintings, cloth—into expressive wholes that ultimately argue that walls are in fact much more than walls. The paintings find ways to make the temple's book collections more accessible. Here we find a public art effort that weaves

Incorporating Egyptian imagery in a Roman medium, Isiac Ritual Worship is a remarkable example of first-century CE Roman wall painting. Discovered in Herculaneum, it illustrates a ritual to the Egyptian goddess Isis. Discussions of Isiac Ritual Worship in modern scholarship position the wall painting as evidence of Isiac ritual practice in Roman Italy without conducting a close visual analysis and examining its combined use of Roman and Egyptian imagery. Therefore, in this thesis, I ask two pressing questions: How does Roman and Egyptian imagery coalesce in Isiac Ritual Worship? And why are th

Wall paintings survive in many houses dating from the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries yet, apart from recording the phenomenon, there has been very little written about them. This research explores how common wall paintings were, what sort of houses had them, when they were painted and most importantly, what was their significance in terms of what they can reveal about the lives of the people who chose to decorate their homes in this manner. Research has concentrated on the Welsh Marches although examples from elsewhere have been referred to. The research hypotheses are: <ul><li
