The sugar cane industry is one of the most water demanding industries in the world. In spite of the fact that the sugar cane itself contains enough water to supply the entire sugar manufacturing process, supplementary water from other sources is added. As a result, the sugar cane industry consumes and generates water in excess. Nutrients are introduced into the waters of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania through various methods, mainly through point and non-point sources. Non-point sources would include agricultural means however, there are often other non-point sources that are often overlooked. Water runoff from stormwater is an important contributor to pollution entering various watersheds. Coliform bacteria have long been used to indicate fecal contamination of food, water, and solid surfaces, and thus the presence of a health hazard. In this study, the in-mill water and external effluent treatment systems of seven typical Canadian pulp and paper mills were shown to support the growth of numerous coliforms, especially Klebsiella spp, Escherichia coli, Enterobacter spp., and Citrobacter spp . The focus of this thesis was to better understand the influence of grinding media on flotation of gold bearing pyrite and cyanide gold leaching in the presence of sulfide minerals (pyrrhotite, arsenopyrite and pyrite). The interactions of sulfide minerals with various grinding media (forged steel, low chromium and high chromium steel and ceramic media) were investigated and the galvanic effects are explored, as well as the effect on flotation and leaching.
