Abstract:
White stringy rot, an unusual type of selective fungal decay, can be found in wood of some dicotyledonous angiosperms. Stages of advanced decay consist of a mass of vessel elements with only remnants of other cells adhering to the vessel walls. Degradation by various white rot Basidiomycetes causes loss of fibers, fiber tracheids, and parenchyma cells but not vessels. In wood of Acacia koa var. koa with a white pocket rot caused by Phellinus kawakamii, fibers and parenchyma cells were preferentially delignified. After extensive lignin removal the cellulose remaining in the secondary wall was d

In this paper the results of laboratory investigation on the range of wood decay caused by Heterobasidion annosum (Fr.) Bref. and Phellinus pini (Brot.) Bondartsev & Singer are described. Wood samples obtained from 25 different, both European and exotic tree species were used as the experimental substrate. The wood samples were exposed to mycelia of tested fungi for 30, 60 and 90 days, and subsequently the loss of their weight was assessed. The results showed a range of trophic preferences of H. annosum and P. pini. Better understanding of these processes could be useful in development of

This test aimed to discover if industrially acetylated hornbeam can tolerate real-field conditions in Hungary, where various microorganisms can attack the wood separately or cooperatively. Untreated samples accompanied the modified wood to assess the degradation capacity of the soil. The test also focused on weather parameters, the Scheffer index, and soil properties. The untreated stakes showed insect damage, soft rot decay, white rot decay, wasp stripping, moss, and cracks. All of the beech and hornbeam stakes broke after 3.5 years, and the last Scots pine sapwood stakes broke after 6 years.

Lignin biodegradation has been extensively studied in white-rot fungi, which largely belong to order Polyporales. Among the enzymes that wood-rotting polypores secrete, lignin peroxidases (LiPs) have been labeled as the most efficient. Here, we characterize a similar enzyme (ApeLiP) from a fungus of the order Agaricales (with ~13,000 described species), the soil-inhabiting mushroom Agrocybe pediades. X-ray crystallography revealed that ApeLiP is structurally related to Polyporales LiPs, with a conserved heme-pocket and a solvent-exposed tryptophan. Its biochemical characterization shows that A

Enzymes secreted by white rot fungi (WRF), such as laccase, offer a promising approach for the treatment of hazardous xenobiotic compounds. This study conducted a comprehensive analysis of the impact of the pesticides 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) and chlorpyrifos on the laccase of Phlebia brevispora BAFC 633 through in vitro and bioinformatics analyses. The fungal strain was shown to be tolerant to both pesticides, with notable morphological and ultrastructural alterations in the mycelium. Laccase activity and two isoenzymes (53 and 70 kDa) were detected in all initial treatments. Th

On September 25, 2010, a wood sample was collected from an entirely decayed root ball of an alpine larch (Larix lyallii Parl.), 10 cm in diameter at breast height, recently downed, but still green. No attempts were made to determine whether the decay progressed into the stem. The discovery occurred in a stand in the Bitterroot Mountains, south of Darby, Montana (elev. 2,530 m; 45.893528° N, 114.278322° W). Several adjacent alpine larches were either dead or displayed thin crowns, and an old Heterobasidion basidiocarp was found on the decayed root ball of a neighboring dead tree, suggesting the

As expected, the lignin/holocellulose ratio is higher in brown rot than in white rot (maximum 14.83 versus 0.67). The growth suppression function of RB is dependent on its protein binding activity. RB contains at least three distinct protein binding functions: (i) the A/B pocket, which binds proteins with the LXCXE motif; (ii) the C pocket, which binds the c-Abl tyrosine kinase; and (iii) the large A/B pocket, which binds the E2F family of transcription factors. Phosphorylation of RB, which is catalyzed by cyclin-dependent protein kinases, inhibits all three protein binding activities. We have previously shown that LXCXE binding is inactivated by the phosphorylation of two threonines (Thr821 and Thr826),

Traditional dental procedures have been transformed by lasers in dentistry, which provide accurate and minimally invasive solutions for a variety of applications. This chapter examines the various applications of lasers in dentistry, highlighting its effectiveness in managing both soft and hard tissues. Lasers are particularly good at preventing bleeding and improving vision during soft tissue treatments such as frenectomies and gingivectomies. Furthermore, periodontal therapy makes considerable use of lasers, which effectively disinfect periodontal pockets and stimulate tissue regeneration. L

While Ron went on to become a fairly accomplished guitarist, I was slowly learning that any talent I had didn't lie within the realm of music. Abstract Following a deposit-related overheating failure of a smelt spout opening tube in a single-drum Kraft recovery boiler, an investigation was initiated to focus on deposit mechanisms in the waterwall tubing. During the next scheduled outage, a similar spout opening was removed for destructive testing. Highly localized zones of thick deposit were documented inside the composite tube opening, while immediately adjacent areas inside the tubing were clean. The deposit morphology suggests steam pockets formed inside the spout opening tubes because of departure from nucleate boiling (DNB), whi
