Abstract:
Marching Together uses gender as a category of analysis along with race and class to reinterpret the history of the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters from its inception in 1925 until the mid-1950s. Chateauvert skillfully accomplishes four goals. First, she provides a detailed account of the individual and organizational contributions of porters' wives to building the Brotherhood in local communities, belying the union's legendary account of courageous men of color battling a racist labor movement and exploitative corporations on their own. Second, she provides an analysis of the gender norms

In Towards the Abolition of Whiteness David Roediger tells the story of Covington Hall, the editor of a newsletter published by the Brotherhood of Timber Workers in Louisiana in 1913 and 1914. Roediger deftly analyzes efforts by Hall and other white writers in the brotherhood to construct cross-racial unity within an otherwise racially torn working class. He shows how Hall redrew the lines of solidarity: On one side were the degraded, of any race.On the other were enlightened workers who eschewed racial divisions, racist language, and stereotypes. “There are white men, Negro men, and Mexican m

The Cold War-era non-aligned movement supported nations that did not wish to join western or eastern blocs. The importance of NAM is debated. NAM's adaptation to a multipolar international order with growing nations like China, India, and Brazil is seldom studied. NAM's potential to handle climate change, global inequity, and security in a period of growing nationalism needs more research. How applicable are NAM's sovereignty and non-intervention principles to transnational concerns requiring international cooperation? The study examines NAM's current relevance. This research analyses the political Islamic movement in the East of Kurdistan between 1979-2001. In 1979, after the Iranian Nations revolution's success, a number of religious movements and organizations formed. A part of these organizations was working to establish a local Kurdish-Islamic authority. On the other hand, there were organizations working with Ayatollah Khomeini and the newly installed regime in Tehran, and others identifying themselves under the umbrella of international Muslim Brotherhood Organization. One of the main groups involved in organising the mobilisation of millions of people in opposition to the Iraq war of 2003 was the Muslim Association of Britain (MAB). Much recent commentary has focused on the involvement of MAB (an offshoot of the Arab Muslim Brotherhood) in the coalition of organisations that led the anti-war movement. Less attention has been paid to how MAB activists themselves understood their working relationship with the other organised groups in the Stop the War coalition. Based mainly on interviews with MAB activists, this article examines their perspectives and experi

Abstract Like that of his father, Markus Barth’s work can be appreciated as a tireless effort to exegetically reorder Jewish-Christian relations. Even so, Barth’s writings on the Jews leave little doubt that he is vexed by a certain strain of Jewish support for Israel. More important, Barth’s writings about post-1967 Israel put his own discourse about the brotherhood of Christians and Jews into crisis. This essay will attempt to offer a working solution to this problem that can help followers of Markus Barth’s ideas continue to engage in productive and meaningful Jewish-Christian conversation.

Students of the life of Lillian D. Wald (1867–1940) know her best as a Progressive activist. A trained nurse and advocate for East European Jewish immigrants on New York's Lower East Side, she founded Henry Street Settlement House there in 1893 and worked for state intervention in public health issues concerning women and children. Though she lived until 1940, historians have focused almost exclusively on her achievements before 1920: her founding of Henry Street, her key role in the formation of the Children's Bureau, her anti-militarism during World War I. This is not surprising, given that

This introductory chapter considers the complicated history of Quaker interracial activism. It specifically looks at the complex relationship between the American Friends Service Committee (AFSC) and race, charting both the successes and shortcomings of the organization's activist work. The story of the AFSC, the chapter asserts, is a complex one—best told not as one of minority or white agency alone but instead as one of attempted cooperation, even if halting and awkward at times. While AFSC activists saw the necessity of working in concert with nonwhite Americans from the start, they rarely

The impact of their work and their intellectual audacity gave birth to new intellectual traditions in Turkey and shook international Turcology and “Turkish studies,” which constitute an important branch of Middle Eastern Studies.İsmail Besṃikçi earned a P

At the turn of the century, concurrent with musical comedy dance teams working in the blackface tradition, an elite group of black performers rejected the minstrel show stereotype of the grinning-and- shuffling blackface clown, insisting upon the perfection of sound, step, and mann
