Most of the time I find that once a piece of music I have made has a ‘shape’—or as I say it, has a ‘form’—it is finished, regardless of what shape it is. But it’s hard to say how I know at what point it has a shape—it’s obviously a subjective thing. I think I have in my mind a kind of closed rounded figure whose shape changes continuously, like an amoeba or something. But it can (and always will) stretch and morph into something new with every experience of listening to the piece; all the parts inside are alive and will move around and change. It’s just important that it is closed. That closure and the fact that things within it can change but always remain within is what makes it a piece....

The earliest story of judgment comes in the Iliad with the Judgment of Paris and the ensuing Trojan Wars. The chapter suggests we have concealed important insights from this story, so enamoured have we become with an understanding of history configured through substantiated evidence. The Iliad resists the logic of entailment and proof, and instead delights in an ordinary world in which myth, event, character, and things cohere and contrast with little overall coherence. In such a world without much in the way of subjects and objects envisaging strategy as enacting a plan seems futile. Despite understanding ourselves differently now, as subjects in whom knowledge resides, the world of the Iliad still resonates. Perhaps in spite of our knowledge, we seem no closer to a settled condition of control than those immersed in the Trojan War.

This book gives an account of those parts of the analysis of closed linear operators acting in Banach or Hilbert spaces that are relevant to spectral problems involving differential operators, and makes applications to such questions. After the exposition of the abstract theory in the first four chapters, Sobolev spaces are introduced and their main properties established. The remaining seven chapters are largely concerned with second-order elliptic differential operators and related boundary-value problems. Particular attention is paid to the spectrum of the Schrödinger operator. Its original form contains material of lasting importance that is relatively unaffected by advances in the theory since 1987, when the book was first published. The present edition differs from the old by virtue of the correction of minor errors and improvements of various proofs. In addition, it contains Notes at the ends of most chapters, intended to give the reader some idea of recent developments together with additional references that enable more detailed accounts to be accessed.

The conclusion looks back over the study, which consists of two parts. Part I shows the necessity of a study of bodies and magnitudes for the project of Aristotelian physical science. An analysis of the notion of body is crucial for the physicist. Part II identifies a theory of body in Aristotle. Although Aristotle does not devote several continuous chapters in his works to an analysis of body and magnitude as he does with motion, time, and place, passages scattered over the corpus Aristotelicum offers us a unified and elegant analysis of the notion of body. This final chapter closes by situating this study in the wider context of Aristotelian scholarship.

Rarely has it been considered as a poem in its own right, or else it has been disparaged as a great poet's baffling outlier. Here, this book fully reintegrates the Ars Poetica into Horace's oeuvre, reading the poem as a coherent, complete, and exceptional literary artifact intimately linked with the larger themes pervading his work. Arguing that the poem can be interpreted as a manual on how to live masquerading as a handbook on poetry, the book traces its key themes to show that they extend beyond poetry to encompass friendship, laughter, intergenerational relationships, and human endeavor. If the poem is read for how it expresses itself, moreover, it emerges as an exemplum of art in which judicious repetitions of words and ideas join disparate parts into a seamless whole that nevertheless lends itself to being remade upon every reading. This book is a logical evolution of Horace's work, which promises to inspire a long overdue reconsideration of a hugely influential yet misunderstood poem.

This chapter, which closes Part II, synthesizes the empirical findings and returns to the theoretical argument. First, it presents the different conjunctions of causal factors that explain party vibrancy. Every combination accounting for party vibrancy includes moderate Exit Barriers. After the party institutionalizes and all factors have consolidated, moderate Exit Barriers facilitate collective action by reducing incentives to defect. However, to sustain vibrancy, moderate Exit Barriers must interact at least with Channels of Ambition. Such channels activate the party’s perceived benefit for individuals, who expect the party to satisfy their political ambitions. If Channels of Ambition are not present, Trauma and Purpose are necessary components for party vibrancy. The joint presence of the theorized factors then sustains reproduction of this vibrancy over time. The chapter also presents a stylized trajectory, or “life cycle,” of party vibrancy and of the theorized causal factors. Finally, it briefly discusses cases of lack of vibrancy.

This chapter argues that the relationship between Hobbes and English deism was closer than is usually appreciated. Hobbes and the subsequent deists had similar ideas on the relationship between politics and religion, a topic which was at the very centre of their projects. They all were motivated primarily by anticlericalism and were the leading figures in the early battle against priestcraft. This argument is presented in two parts. The first reviews the ways in which Charles Blount, John Toland, Matthew Tindal, and Anthony Collins were indebted to Hobbes, each in his own distinct way. The second part argues that Hobbes’s theory contained some central elements that were, in fact, rather ‘enlightened’—the hope for natural reason being one main theme—thus bringing Hobbes’s project closer to that of subsequent deists. Deism, in this sense, was one possible highway to what may be seen as a Hobbesian enlightenment.

Policy practitioners and scholars have tended to treat the responsibility to protect (R2P) and peacebuilding as separate domains. This chapter, in contrast, argues that these two domains are more closely connected than both the policy discourse and much of the academic literature would suggest. Peacebuilding appears to be an integral part of R2P, and peacebuilding strategies aimed at reducing the risks of conflict relapse are core strategies for preventing atrocity crimes. Further, the use of coercive military force to stop an imminent or actual atrocity crime creates its own requirement for post-crisis peacebuilding. Thus, closer analysis of the relationship between peacebuilding and R2P would benefit both practitioners and scholars.

David Sedley recently complained that despite the enormous amount of work on Parmenides in the past generation, the details of Parmenides' arguments have received insufficient attention. It is universally recognized that Parmenides' introduction of argument into philosophy was a move of paramount importance. It is also recognized that the arguments of fragment B8 are closely related. At the beginning of B8, Parmenides asserts that what-is has several attributes; he offers a series of proofs that what-is indeed has those attributes. This article undertakes a close analysis of fragment B8, teasing out the structure of the arguments, and showing what parts of the traditional and new interpretations of Parmenides those arguments do (or do not) support. It presents some surprising conclusions and opens up spaces for new interpretations.

The life of Rilke’s work is in its words, and this book attends closely to the development of that life as it unfolds over Rilke’s career. What is a poem, and how does it act upon us when we read? This is a question of the greatest interest to Rilke, who addresses it in several poems and for whom the experience of reading affords an interaction with the world, a recalibration of our ways of attending to it, which set it apart from other kinds of experience. Rilke’s work is often approached in periods – he is the author of the Neue Gedichte, or of Malte, or of the Duino Elegies, or of the Sonette an Orpheus – as if the different phases of his work had little to do with one another, but in fact it is a concentrated and evolving exploration of the possibilities of poetic language, a working of the life of words into precise and exacting forms in dialogue with the texture of the world. This book traces that trajectory in a series of close readings that do not neglect the lesser-known, uncollected poems and the poems in French, as well as Rilke’s activity as a translator of Michelangelo, Shakespeare, Barrett Browning, Mallarmé and Valéry among many others. These encounters were part of Rilke’s engagement with the world, his way of extending the reach of his language to get it ever closer to the ungraspable movements, the risk and promise, of life itself.

The last 50 years has witnessed a radical change in the care of the severely mentally ill as asylums have closed and care has moved to the community. Two developments have marked this transition. The first is the development of multidisciplinary community mental health teams (CMHTs). The second is an increasing reliance on outreach to engage and support the most seriously ill patients. This book is a guide for those, whatever their professional background, who work in CMHTs. It focuses on the practicalities of the job—what they all need to know, whether coming to it from social work, nursing, or psychology. It is based on our decade of working together in an assertive outreach team and our backgrounds in nursing and psychiatry in a range of CMHTs.The book is in three parts. The first addresses the underlying principles of the practice and its variations. It explores the themes that are common to all outreach work and the specific thinking and practice characterizing different teams and settings. The second section addresses the range of problems faced by the outreach worker. These include the challenges presented by different diagnoses, plus those of hostility, homelessness, suicidality, and the omnipresent complications of drug and alcohol abuse. Psychosocial interventions aimed to promote employment and social stability are outlined with clinical examples. The third section explores the structural issues of managing the team, providing effective supervision, and conducting research. We draw on relevant research when appropriate, but the style of the book is practical, based primarily on accumulated experience.

Part II of II: This chapter explores philosophical responses to Cartesian dualism—notably Maurice Merleau-Ponty’s elaboration of phenomenology—and its relevance to medicine. With close reading of Merleau-Ponty’s Phenomenology of Perception, phenomenology’s attentiveness to lived experience and to embodiment is described. Next, discussion of the work of philosophers, clinicians, ethicists and patients—including Havi Carel, S. Kay Toombs, Richard Baron, Edmund Pellegrino, Richard Zaner, and Fredrik Svenaeus—demonstrates the influence of phenomenological perspectives in healthcare, addressing the dissociation and alienation often experienced by clinicians and patients alike. Counter-examples to the philosophical narrative presented here are then offered, demonstrating the rich complexity of philosophical enquiry. The chapter closes with a brief discussion of the poem “Soul” by David Ferry, which offers a means of approaching the age-old issue of the relationship between body, mind, and spirit. Thus the authors argue that philosophical understanding—particularly in combination with literature—offers particular insight into the challenges and possibilities of healthcare today.

This chapter examines private elder care in a broader context of constructed kinship relations by focusing on Mexicana elder care workers in Santa Barbara, California. More specifically, it considers the case study of Cecilia Ramos, a worker who forms part of a family care group and who literally and figuratively “extends” kinship to her ward. Before discussing Cecilia's case, the chapter provides an overview of the evolving range of elder care in Santa Barbara. It also reviews the literature on domestic work and the role that personalism continues to play within the occupation, especially as it pertains to workers' expressed desires for closer “family” relations with their employers. It concludes by showing that, in the case of Cecilia, “extending” kinship assumes two meanings. Анотація:

The stages by which the Gospel and letters commonly known as ‘of John’ (as also of the Apocalypse, often assigned to the same author) became part of the canon are exemplary of wider canonical processes in the early church. While closely inter-related there are also differentiated patterns of recognition of these writings in different parts of the church and at different times. This chapter examines those stages with attention to the evidence of early Christian writings and to scholarly debate about it. More recent discussion has interrogated the nature of ‘canon’ in relation to other terms expressing authority, and also in relation to the range of actual textual practices and of the wider body of texts that flourished among early Christians.

The community co-operatives that are spreading today in many parts of the world are the arrival point of an evolutionary process that has seen the progressive shift of co-operatives’ focus from specific social and professional groups to society as a whole. Since the term ‘community co-operative’ is relatively new and similar institutions are named differently at different times, the first task is to elucidate the concept. Its basic elements are community goods, territory, and citizenship, which are discussed with reference to factual cases. We then discuss differences between new community co-operatives and old ones. In the second part we review some data about them, with a special focus on customer-owned providers of public services. The chapter closes with a discussion of the economic reasons why citizen participation through consumer ownership this organizational mode is more likely to expand today in response to privatization failures than it did in the past.

Part I explores Xi’s formative childhood and youth experience as well as his governance record spanning every administrative level from the village to the capital. Part II focuses on Xi’s first five-year term as general secretary (2012–2017) and as president (2013–2018). The book discusses all major issues, including Xi’s legitimacy building, consolidation of power, ideological redefinition, party rectification, anticorruption efforts, and control of dissent up until 2018. It explores reforms in the economy, social policy, the judiciary, military, and foreign relations in the same period. The Belarusian armed forces are caught in an unsettled struggle between past and future. A pyramid-shaped resource base with a disproportionately large Soviet-era foundation and a much smaller tip of modern technology, the pool of equipment is impressive at first glance, but upon closer inspection it becomes clear that a substantial part is obsolete and Belarus’s force readiness is occasionally put into question by even its closest ally, Russia. The particular understanding by the Belarusian authorities of the implications of the country’s aspirations for neutrality is unlikely to change even in a long-term perspective. Consequently, Belarus is likely to remain a hesitant ally within the Common Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) and even in its relations with Russia. In the absence of a major reinterpretation by the regime of the country’s geopolitical context, the defence burden is likely to remain well below the 2 per cent mark even in a long-term perspective.
