Abstract The development of a coherent methodology for corpus-based work in translation studies is essential for the evolution of this newfield of research into a fully-fledged paradigm within the discipline. The design of a monolingual, multi-source-language comparable corpus of English as a resource for the systematic study of the nature of translated text can be regarded as an important step towards the development of such a methodology. This paper deals with a crucial and problematic aspect of the design of a monolingual comparable corpus, namely the achievement of an adequate level of comparability between its translational and non-translational components.

In the previous research, a novel embedded multi-phase optimization methodology was proposed to solve the NC-hard difficulty of self-organizing system involving the complex correlated constraints, which has been theoretically verified. This paper takes a serial of comparable experiments to demonstrate the efficiency of the previously proposed novel methodology. First, the description of the universal problem is given, based which the mathematic model for the self-organizing system is elected. Second, a detailed example that includes complex correlated relationship is suggested. Finally, the detailed experiments verify the correct of the proposed methodology, which integrates these two sub optimization problems into a searching loop to ensure the feasibility of solution and improve the searching efficiency in the complex correlated system, with the graphics, figures, and tables.

Field-based simulation research can be delayed or prevented due to restricted resources and other practical challenges. Although laboratory work is a feasible alternative, it is often criticized for a lack of generalizability. We faced this issue when investigating the impact of workplace interruptions on nurses’ work performance in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). The potential relationship between interruptions and errors has been widely investigated in healthcare settings; however, much of the evidence is associative. Some evidence outside the healthcare domain points to a causal connection between interruptions and errors, but the studies are mostly laboratory based and interruptions are artificial to the situation. Our eventual aim is to carry out a high-fidelity randomized-controlled trial to test the hypothesis that interruptions cause errors in healthcare, which could have major implications for interventions and policy. However, there are considerable challenges and constraints to overcome when designing such an experiment; for example (a) a limited potential participant pool within the ICU, (b) constant changes to technology and procedures in the ICU, and (c) restricted access to hospital simulation rooms. There are various ways to address these issues but most options compromise the generalizability of the simulation to authentic situations. By adopting principles of Brunswick’s representative design, we designed an initial laboratory study to be used as a formal pilot study in a different, but parallel, context to healthcare. Representative design refers to the “arrangement of conditions of an experiment so that they represent the behavioural setting to which the results are intended to apply” (Araujo, Davids, & Passos, 2007, p. 72). Representing the ‘natural world’ with high fidelity is not crucial in representative design, but rather ensuring that the properties of the conditions to which the researcher wishes to generalize are adequately captured in the laboratory task (Hammond & Stewart, 2001). Accordingly, we have created a laboratory-based simulation on the basis of the properties we aim to capture in a healthcare-based simulation, so that we can generalize findings from the former to the latter. The laboratory component needed to involve a task that embodied the high-level properties of medication preparation and administration, with a specialized population who regularly perform the task. The task of cocktail making fits the above requirements because it has high-level properties similar to medication preparation and administration. Cocktail making is concerned with controlled liquids, it requires perceptual motor skills, it involves multi-step tasks carried out in a busy environment where there is a high demand on working memory, and it is performed by experts (bartenders). These similarities mean that cocktail making can be used as a laboratory analog of certain aspects of medication preparation and administration. First, we mapped the physical environment across the two domains to ensure the cocktail component possessed the same spatial properties as the medication component. Second, we designed the high-level structure of the cocktail scenarios to approximate the high-level structure of the medication component scenarios. Third, we designed the interrupting tasks and added them to the scenarios. Experiment 1 of the cocktail component was a condition with zero interruptions to provide a baseline error rate with which to calculate the required sample size for Experiment 2. Experiment 2 was a between-subjects study in which participants were randomly assigned to receive either 3 or 12 interruptions. All participants had at least one-month cocktail making experience in a licensed venue. Cocktail errors were the analog of clinical errors in healthcare (Westbrook et al., 2010). In Experiment 1, an average of 44% of cocktails made contained at least one error per scenario ( SD = 18%). To calculate the required sample size for Experiment 2, an effect size was calculated by integrating our baseline data with observational data from Westbrook et al. (2010) and a power analysis was performed. Data collection for Experiment 2 is now completed. The findings from Experiment 2 will be used to calculate the required sample size for the medication component and lessons learned from the cocktail component will help finalize the design of the medication component. The cocktail component of our study is not totally analogous to the medication component, but we have shown that principles of representative design can be used to design a simulation from which we can argue that generalizable findings can be gathered. A major advantage of our approach is that we have been able to design and test many formal aspects of the medication component of our study prior to stepping into the hospital simulator. Findings from the medication component will help to shape interventions and policies in the healthcare domain that reduce error rates and increase patient safety. The cocktail component will contribute to the interruptions literature because the interruptions are representative of those that would actually occur in the workplace – something that is rare in laboratory-based interruptions research.

In this study, we aimed to compare the effects of dexpanthenol and N-acetylcysteine on wound healing. The wound healing process is a multifaceted sequence of activities associated with tissue restoration process. A number of investigations and clinical studies have been performed to determine new approaches for the improvement of wound healing. A total of 30 rats were divided into 3 equal groups. A linear 2-cm incision was made in the rats' skin. No treatment was administered in the first (control) group. Dexpanthenol cream was administered to the rats in the second group and 3% N-acetylcysteine cream was administered to the rats in the third group. The wound areas of all of the rats were measured on certain days. On the 21st day, all wounds were excised and histologically evaluated. The epithelialization and granulation rates between the groups were revealed to be similar in microscopic evaluations. Although the fibrosis was remarkable in the control group as compared with the other groups, it was similar in N-acetylcysteine and dexpanthenol groups. Angiogenesis rate was remarkable in the N-acetylcysteine group compared with the others. In multiple-comparison analysis, Dexpanthenol and N-acetylcysteine groups had similar results in terms of wound healing rates (P < 0.05), which were both higher than in the control group (P > 0.05). The efficacy of N-acetylcysteine in wound healing is comparable to dexpanthenol, and both substances can be used to improve wound healing.

Purpose To review a historical cohort of childhood ganglioneuroma (GN), the benign representative of the peripheral neuroblastic tumor (PNT) family. Patients and Methods Of 2,286 PNTs enrolled between 1979 and 2005, 146 (6.4%) were registered as GN. Histological revision was carried out on 76 tumors. Diagnosis was confirmed in 45, while 27 were reclassified as ganglioneuroblastoma intermixed (GNBI) and four were reclassified as other PNT subtypes. Results GNs differed from other PNTs for sex, age, tumor site, stage, tumor markers, and scintigraphic results. Characteristics of 76 reviewed and 70 nonreviewed patients were comparable. Reviewed GN and GNBI patients were comparable except for homovanillic acid excretion, metaiodobenzylguanidine scintigraphy, and DNA content. Seven patients were only biopsied and 139 underwent surgery. Twenty-two patients suffered surgery-related complications, of which two were fatal and seven were severe. Radical tumor resection and surgery-related complication rates were comparable for GN, GNBI, and nonreviewed instances. Six patients developed tumor progression but survived. Two patients developed a late malignancy but survived. None of the 146 patients received chemotherapy. Of 146 patients, two died of surgery-related complications and 144 survived. Conclusion Diagnosis was changed to GNBI for approximately one third of 76 reviewed tumors. Patients with confirmed GN, reclassified as GNBI, and nonreviewed histology presented with comparable clinical, biochemical, and biologic features. Surgical results, complication rate, number of progressions, and outcome were similar for the three groups. Surgery was associated with significant risk of complications. Survival was not influenced by extent of tumor resection. Aggressive surgical approach should not be recommended for childhood GN and GNBI.

The study also suggests that marital violence is found across socio-economic groups. Comparing with conventional mechanical shot peening (SP) technique, water cavitation peening (WCP) experiments of Almen strips were carried out on a self-manufactured equipment. The results show that WCP demonstrates a wide range of standoff distance (SD) that from the nozzle to the surface of the object. By measuring the colour changes of the Fuji pressure sensing film, over 110 MPa impacting pressure was detected, which is resulted from the bubbles blasting on the sample surface when the SD is from 65 to 100 mm under 40 MPa of operating pressure. 600 MPa compressive residual stress achieved on the suface of the Almen strips after WCPed for 32 min. The depth of the zone affected by the compressive residual stress is about 100 µm. The highest residual stress appears in the top surface layer, while in case of SP it appears in the subsurface. Compared to SP, WCP is capable to get rather smoother surface and cause less deformation of the testing sheet, simultaneously.

In this study, single-kesterite-phase Cu 2 ZnSnS 4 (CZTS) and Cu 2 ZnSnSe 4 (CZTSe) nanocrystallines have been synthesized by a simple solvothermal route. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) absorbance and Raman scattering spectroscopy were used to characterize the optical and micro-structure properties of the as-synthesized samples. The bandgap of CZTS could be tuned in a large range by incorporating a few Se atoms. Both the CZTS and CZTSe exhibited the similar temperature dependence of the Raman "A" modes, including a monotonic redshift in peak position and an irregular variation in peak linewidth. Such a behavior might be due to the cumulative effect of thermal expansion and small crystalline sizes.

Googling and using apps for health-related information are highly prevalent worldwide. So far, little is known about the emotional, body-related, and behavioral effects of using both Google and health-related apps. In our experimental study, bodily symptoms were first provoked by a standardized hyperventilation test. A total of 147 participants (96.6% students) were then randomly assigned to one of three conditions: Googling for the causes of the currently experienced bodily symptoms, using a medical app to diagnose the experienced symptoms, and a waiting control condition. Health-related Internet use for symptoms led to stronger negative affect, increased health anxiety, and increased need to consult a physician compared with the control condition. Googling and using the medical app showed comparable adverse emotional and behavioral effects. The findings are in line with current models of cyberchondria in which health-related Internet use represents an essential factor in maintaining and amplifying emotional distress.

As a high-stakes standardized test, IELTS is expected to have comparable forms of test papers so that test takers from different test administration on different dates receive comparable test scores. Therefore, this study examined the text difficulty and task characteristics of four parallel academic IELTS reading tests to reveal to what extent the four tests were comparable in terms of text difficulty, construct coverage, response format, item scope, and task scope. The Coh-Metrix-TEA software was used for the text difficulty analyses and expert judgments were used for task characteristics analyses. The results show that the four reading tests were partly comparable in text difficulty, comparable in terms of construct coverage and item scope, but not comparable in terms of response format and task scope. Based on the findings, implications were discussed on test development and future research.

Background: Juvenile sexual offending is an area that has been largely under-researched to date and this has resulted in very little and sometimes conflicting research being published in the area. The dearth of empirical data in the space is concerning as it suggests that policy may not be underpinned by an empirical framework and this has far reaching implications for the development of laws, intervention programmes and the management of young people accused/convicted of a juvenile sexual offence. Moreover, the lack of an evidence-based framework has the potential to contribute to misinformation amongst the public who may be relying upon anecdotal news reports and exaggerated media representations. Methods/Design: This study will use a survey to collect the same data from each European member state with the aim of generating comparable data. The first step in the design process was to design a typology of juvenile sexual offences so the data collected represents the same offences across each jurisdiction. The second step in the design process is to design a survey, using the typology, to collect data across each member country. Discussion: This study aims to take a first step towards generating comparable data across each member state. As such this project will be the first to generate accurate comparable data on the prevalence of juvenile sexual offending across each EU Member State and data on how each Member State reacts to juvenile sexual offending.

It also aimed to establish materials to differentiate individuals with this condition from a comparable non-Asperger group. Asperger subjects tended to be poorer than comparable patients on all subtests.

This study compares chloroform/methanol extraction and acidic methanol extraction of neutral compounds in absorbed lipid pottery residues from fourteen archaeological sherds. Previous studies have established that fatty acid extraction is more effective with acidic methanol extraction. This study suggests that acidic methanol extraction of neutral compounds, including sterols, alkanols, alkanes, and terpenoids, is more effective than or comparable to chloroform/methanol solvent extraction in most cases. The acidic methanol method extracts sterols, terpenoids, and alkanes more effectively than or comparably to chloroform/methanol extraction.

Many traditional systems of medicines employ herbal drugs for the hepatoprotection. Aim of the study was designed to evaluate the hepatoprotective potential of polyherbal formulation against alcohol induced hepatotoxicity in wistar albino rats. Group I animals were treated with 1% CMC for 18 days. Group II, III and IV animals were treated with 1% CMC, polyherbal formulation 180mg/kg/day and silymarin 100mg/kg/day respectively for 18 days and then orally administration with ethanol 3.76 g/kg/day simultaneously for 18 days. After 24 hours of last dosing, the blood was obtained through retro-orbital plexus under light anaesthesia and the animals were sacrificed. Hepatoprotective potential was assessed by various biochemical parameters such as AST, ALT, ALP, LDH, bilirubin, cholesterol, TG and thiopentone sodium induced sleep time. Group III rats showed significant (p<0.01) decrease in AST, ALT, ALP, LDH, bilirubin, cholesterol, TG, liver weight(wt.) and relative liver wt. levels while significant (p<0.01) increase in TP levels as compared to group II rats. Hepatoprotective potential of polyherbal formulation 180mg/kg/day was comparable to that of standard drug silymarin 100mg/kg/day. Results of the study were well supported by histopathological observations. This study confirms that polyherbal formulation possesses hepatoprotective potential comparable to that of standard drug silymarin as it exhibited comparable protective potential against PCM induced hepatotoxicity in albino rats. In this note, by introducing the set of points of coincidence, we study the iterative roots of order preserving homeomorphisms. In particular, we prove a characterization of identical iterative roots of an order preserving homeomorphism using the points of coincidence of functions.
