Abstract Connecting storm-sewers located at rather different elevations may be made with vortex drop shafts in which the energy dissipation is made by the friction between the vertical shaft and the flow and downstream by the impinging jet in a dissipation chamber. Following the first model design in the 1940s, different types of vortex drop shafts have been developed. One of the most used type is the so-called spiral vortex drop shaft developed to work in supercritical flow with good performance in both energy dissipation and space constrains. In this paper, an experimental flow characterization in a spiral vortex drop shaft is conducted covering the three main components of these structures, namely the inlet channel, the vertical shaft and the dissipation chamber. The results include measurement of water depths, pressure and velocity.

Анотація:
For a positive displacement motor (PDM), the threaded joint connecting drive shaft shell (DSS) and universal shaft shell that is close to the bit is inclined to fracture. In this paper, elastic-plastic fracture performance of the threaded connection is simulated under both make-up torque and bending moment. Firstly, an FE model, which includes a cracked external thread of the DSS and an engaging internal thread of the universal shaft shell, is established and validated. Secondly, influences of both plastic deformation and the helix angle on fracture properties of the cracked thread are evaluated quantitatively. Meanwhile interactions between two cracks are also discussed. Finally, under the two kinds of loading conditions, i.e. loaded by pre-load only and loaded by both pre-load and bending moment, explicit relationships between characteristic J-integrals and the crack depth are obtained for the DSS.

Анотація:
The propeller shaft of rear-wheel drive vehicle transfers power from the engine to rear wheels through the differential gear box. Generally the propeller shaft has a two-piece steel structure of more than 10kg of weight. In this paper, we designed the one-piece hybrid propeller shaft using the aluminum, carbon fiber composite material and glass fiber composite material. Research on the adhesive strength of the hybrid propeller shaft with respect to roughness of aluminum surface was conducted. The one piece hybrid propeller shaft satisfying the performance standards of propeller shaft such as statistic torsion torque strength and first bending natural frequency was manufactured. The manufactured hybrid shaft was assembled with the suitable connecting parts and analyzed for performance verification. This hybrid propeller shaft satisfies all performance standards of propeller shaft for automobile application. The hybrid shaft has vibration characteristics of 237Hz significantly higher than the standard characteristic of 150Hz of the existing two-piece steel structure propeller shaft.

At the site of a water drainage shaft on the campus of Qatar University that serves as a man-made karst analog, two seismic imaging techniques were adapted to use resonant scattered waves recorded during active-source seismic surveys and during passive ambient-noise surveys. Data acquisition included two seismic transmission surveys that encompassed the shaft and a passive ambient-noise survey that extended across the top of the shaft. Seismic imaging of band-pass-filtered resonance waves correctly estimated the location and dimension of the shaft. Furthermore, the method detected the presence and the location of a horizontal drainage pipe and gravel bed connecting neighboring water shafts. Ambient-noise data were analyzed by computing amplitude values of the seismic records in spectral passbands. The results indicated an amplification of seismic amplitudes above the shaft for low-frequency passbands and a sharp decrease in amplitude values for high-frequency passbands. The high- and low-amplitude values displayed as a function of the receiver position allowed for accurate detection and location of the shaft in space. Ground truthing of the imaging results confirmed the accuracy of the seismic techniques, whereas numerical modeling supported the interpretation of the ambient-noise data. The techniques used do not require knowledge of the seismic velocities in the subsurface, but they depend on a priori information about the approximate location of the target.

Take one large miner high electric draught shearer for example. According to the lumped mass method, the gear’s moment of inertia of the shearer’s cutting part was equivalent to the gears connecting the output shaft of the electric cutting motor, the stiffness of central shaft and coupling was equivalent to the output elastic shaft of the electric cutting motor, and the dynamic analysis model of the elastic shaft of the cutting part was set up. Based on this model, the lagrange equation was built. The critical speed of the elastic shaft system, the motion situation on main vibration and harmonic vibration mode, motor shaft’s angular displacement, angular velocity, and angular acceleration’s dynamic response process under the condition of step loads were all analyzed and obtained. The critical speed provided theoretical basis for choosing the working speed of every shaft system of the shearer. The hollow elastic shaft had a protective effect to cutting motor’s damping and overload. The research results provided theoretical basis for the design of the elastic shaft of large miner high shearer.

The structural feature and technical indexes of 2A14 aluminum alloy connecting rod was analyzed. The pouring system of gravity die-casting process was initially designed according to the technical requirements. The gravity filling and solidification stages in the permanent mold were simulated by ProCAST. The simulation results show that the casting defects are predicted and the casting process are improved. The most possible section of crack defects are the transition part between the shaft and the connecting rod small or big end.

Objectives: Numerical determinations of Stress Intensity Factors (SIFs) for a shaft under mixed-mode load with a crack of different sizes in the connection zone between square and circular cross-sections. Methods: Linear-elastic Fracture Mechanics principles are used. The numerical analysis program used was ABAQUS CAE version 6.9-3. The shaft consists in a circular section and a square section, with a fillet connecting zone. Cracks of different lengths and different depths are modeled. The shaft is subjected to torsion and bending. The SIFs were determined using the contour integral method. Results: The stress distribution was determined and plotted, and the stress concentration effect of the notches was highlighted. Crack propagation was also performed, using the XFEM module of ABAQUS code. The computed SIFs were plotted along the crack front. Conclusions: Crack initiation and propagation matched the pattern obtained in experimental tests, thus validating the model. The results confirmed that the fillet zone between the two sections acts as a stress concentrator. The fillet radius determines the magnitude of stress concentration. Crack geometry has a significant influence on SIFs, as well as on the global stress distribution.

Connecting rod is the very important connection and force bearing parts of piston engine crank mechanism; work in the role of various kinds of alternating stress. Taking a general rod from Lycoming IO-360-A1B6 aero-piston engine as the analysis object, first, a 3-D finite element model of the rod is established in ANSYS Workbench. And then, considering the influence of gas pressure in cylinder after ignition acting on the connecting rod under engines rated speed conditions, through the transient dynamic analysis, find in all load steps, the maximum equivalent stress occurred at the transition zone between the shaft and little head, and received the maximum equivalent stress versus time curve, to provide numerical basis for improving high-cycle fatigue reliability of the rod. Finally, according to equivalent stress contours of the rod when gas in cylinder peak pressure occurs, initially identified rods hazardous areas,to provide foundation for the development of standard repair process.

This paper focusing on the crack at hole of guyed-mast’s ear-plate connecting cables and shaft of guyed-mast, adopting two degree of freedom crack propagation model, track the crack propagation according to the increment of the deepest point and the surface point on the crack front of crack at hole of guyed-mast’s ear-plate. The stress intensity factors of I,II and III type crack with given shape and size have been calculated via finite element method, and a numerical method of calculating stress intensity factors with any shape and size crack has been proposed; furthermore according to modified I, II and III type compound crack propagation velocity formula on the basis of Paris crack propagation velocity formula, we analyzed the changing of crack shape parameter a/c with crack size parameter a/T of crack at hole of ear-plate connecting cable and shaft of guyed-mast by numerical integration method and obtained the propagation characteristic.

Анотація:
An effort in progress to develop a new twin-rotor piston engine is described. A proposition of sealing, which benefits from the conventional piston-cylinder structure is presented. A six-stroke twin-rotor piston engine, which is designed to have coolant intake and drain stroke is proposed. A differential velocity drive mechanism, which controls the rotors’ oscillation, is invented. The differential velocity drive mechanism utilizes novel kinematic design to completely eliminate inertial loads. The twin-rotor engine is expected to have three key technical advantages for attaining higher power density than any available piston engine: the first is symmetrical structure and well-balanced kinetics; the second is 16 or more power strokes per revolution of the output shaft and more than two symmetrical working chambers exporting power at any time; the third is performing the four-stroke cycle without using the valve mechanism.

On the basis of continuous medium theory, computer simulation analysis of metal-powder injection molding was carried out with the help of FLOTRAN hydro-analysis module of ANSYS software. The effects of the gates with different dimension and location were testified. The impact of gate system on the filling process is discussed. The dynamic display of the flow leading edge in the cavity, and temperature field of the melt were researched. A result was obtained that we can modify the design of runner system if we make a full use of existing equipment resource.

Анотація:
In the article the problems related to the dynamics of a mechanic system on misalignment of shafts in radial direction are presented. The object of the investigation is a two-shaft system connected with an elastic centrifugal ring coupling. Using equations of static equilibrium it was found that an internal moment of resistance to rotation appears in the coupling connecting the radially misaligned shafts. Using Dalamber's principle for the rotational movement the differential equation that describes the rotation of the second shaft has been developed. It was shown that after the perfonnance of the corresponding actions and the introduction of a new variable the said equation is transformed in to an equation which character virtually coincides with the equation describing free oscillations of a mathematical pendulum. Because the value of misalignment of shafts in the radial direction is small in comparison with other parameters, a small parameter method was used for the solution of this equation. The found solutions show that rotational vibrations with the double frequency of rotational movement are excited in the misaligned mechanical system with an elastic centrifugal ring coupling. The restrictions ofthe application of a small parameters method have been explored and the limits of its application have been found.

Анотація:
The bearing support breakage of screw coal powder conveyor in power plant boiler went through four stages: axial displacement of shaft sleeve, shaft sleeve wearing by shield ring and by bearing, and the wearing of skeleton seal rings and dustproof felts by shaft sleeve. By analyzing the wearing characters of each part, the renovation structure was designed. The bearing settled style was changed from using shield ring to using locknut by designing convex sidestep on the shaft sleeve, preventing the axial from drifting. Substituting for the welding assembly, the bolt connecting between the covers and the bearing support body was selected to replace the worn sealing materials easily in dismantling and installing. Good operating effects were achieved after the renovation of the coal powder conveyor bearing support, in the screw coal powder manufacturing line of 100MW power plant boiler, there was no line vibrating, coal leaking, noising and line locking, having decreased the repairing cost greatly and insuring the safety and stable electric power producing.

Five types of bevel gear pairs having straight teeth were designed to analyze the effect of the modification of the shaft angle. This angle is the parameter − subject of TCA. After the geometric design process and the creation and assembly of the CAD models, Tooth Contact Analysis (TCA) was performed in order to get the mechanical parameters focusing of the tooth roots of the connecting teeth. We repeated this process five times since the load torques were also changed. The received mechanical parameters on the teeth connection of the pinion and the driven gear were analyzed with taking in consideration all four-tooth root surfaces that limit the contacting teeth pair. Finally, we referred to the useful selection of the appropriate gear pair for the engineering application.

One new sliding-block balancing mechanism is proposed for the single-cylinder diesel engine. In the new mechanism, the sliding block is installed against the engine piston. The reciprocation trajectory of sliding block is collinear with the piston trajectory, while sliding block and piston move in the opposite direction, just like two opposite crank connecting rods. The new mechanism includes the crankshaft, connecting rod ring, the slider and the guide components. Through the bearing, connecting rod is installed in the eccentric journal of the crankshaft. The circular connecting rod is in the accurate guiding surface of the slider; and the guide pins are in the guide groove. Guide rod connects with supporting shaft through the guide hole of the slide. The optimized parameters for the sliding block show that the ratio of eccentric distance of the eccentric journal to the length of the connecting rod is equal to the ratio of crank radius to connecting rod length. The appropriate results can balance both the centrifugal inertia force and the reciprocating inertia force generated by piston group. Even the complete balance of the first and second-order reciprocating inertia forces can be obtained, which can reduce the vibration and noise of diesel engine.

The paper presents a new design solution for the multi-cylinder compressed air engine, described in the PL 216801 patent. A characteristic feature of the engine is its double-piston operation with pistons working in pairs in opposition and a reciprocating movement in toroidal cylinders. The energy of compressed air was used more effectively in the described engine than in the solutions known so far. Comparing the engine built in accordance with the PL 216801 patent with the parameters of the MP165 and MP3000 engines, lower air consumption in relation to the power generated on the shaft is demonstrated. The described engine uses only one crankshaft and one straight complex shaft, which constitutes an innovative combination of pistons, while maintaining the same engine operation as in the case of two crankshafts operating with phase shift and working chamber shift. Such a solution results in a reduction in the harmful space occurring at the beginning of the power stroke to the value close to “zero”—the necessity to maintain the minimum distance between the pistons working in one cylinder when they are at their closest exists only to for the sake of collision-free operation—which is very desirable for the compressed engine operating with a shift of the working chamber. The mechanical efficiency of the engine has also been improved by guiding the pistons on the complex shaft, and the number of kinematic nodes was decreased by applying only three connecting rods supporting six pistons, which also makes it possible to improve the power and mass relation by approximately 25% in comparison with the currently known engines of similar power.

The article considers torsional vibrations in combination with other technical factors, which remain a cause of damages and breakdowns of the ship's propeller shafts, intermediate shafts and crankshafts. Torsional vibrations inevitably occur in the ship plants. It can be explained by the uneven torque of the engine and the torque on the propeller (exposure of the propeller, uneven movement of the water flow, stormy weather, etc.), which leads to alternating twisting of the shaft. To reduce torsional vibrations, dampers are used, which require periodic performance testing by using the torsiography procedure. In contrast to the existing monitoring systems of the technical condition of the damper, it is planned to install an information processing unit for the software and hardware complex for monitoring torsional vibrations of the ship's shaft line and the parameters associated with them (vibration and temperature changes of the flexible elements of the connecting couplings). The unit under development will allow to constantly monitor the level of torsional vibrations and, if they increase, to signal the ship's mechanic to switch to another operational mode of the main engine, which will increase the reliability and automation of the ship power plants, the safety of navigation, and reduce the economic costs of ship operating

AbstractThe aim of research was creation of a furnace for aluminum alloys smelting “in a liquid bath” in order to reduce metal loss. In the paper, the author demonstrates the results of research on smelting of aluminum alloys in a shaft-reverberatory furnace designed by the author. It has been shown that smelting aluminum alloy in a liquid bath was able to significantly reduce aluminum loss and that shaft-reverberatory design provided high efficiency and productivity along with lower energy costs. Ensuring continuous operation of the liquid bath and superheating chamber, which tapped alloy with the required texture, was achieved by means of the optimal design of partition between them. The optimum section of the connecting channels between the liquid bath of smelting and the superheating chamber has been theoretically substantiated and experimentally confirmed. The author proposed a workable shaft-reverberatory furnace for aluminum alloys smelting, providing solid charge melting in a liquid bath.

The reliability of propulsion shafting systems is a major concern for ocean-going vessels because mid-ocean repairs can be time-consuming and spare parts must be available. To address this concern, vibration modeling and experimental measurements were conducted on a propulsion shafting system with a Z-drive propeller, with the objective of identifying the source of failure for the flexible rubber coupling connecting the diesel engine with the intermediate shaft. The torsional fluctuations in the flexible coupling dramatically increased and then abruptly ceased. The modeling results revealed that the frictional losses during power transmission through the universal joints could act as an excitation force for self-excited vibration. The coupling connected to the intermediate shaft did not have sufficient radial flexibility to dampen these vibrations. To avoid the effects of the self-excited torsional vibration, it is recommended that this coupling is replaced with one that is capable of absorbing the radial shaft displacement.

This paper employs hybrid modelling techniques in the investigation of the dynamic performance of ‘long’ driveshafts, which include a clutch and load, for power transmission purposes. The power transmission system considered is suitable for a wide variety of applications in which the load is coupled directly to the clutch and hence to the ‘long’ driveshaft. Owing to the length of the shaft and relatively pointwise location of the clutch and load, a distributed—lumped (D—L) description of the arrangement is investigated. This enables the behaviour of the dispersed driveline shaft to be ‘adequately’ replicated along with the connecting elements. A discrete modelling approach is adopted and analysis and simulated response characteristics are presented, thereby validating the technique. Existing results on clutch judder are referred to and the interaction between judder and the driveshaft torsional oscillation is commented upon.

This paper describes an alternative to splines for connecting turbine discs to shafts. The trilobe shape consists of six smoothly blending 60° circular arcs of two alternating radii; it is between a circle (both radii equal) and a triangle (smaller radius zero, larger radius infinite). Frozen-stress, photoelastic models of a realistic disc and a tubular shaft have been designed, made and loaded centrifugally, under static torsion and under combined torsion and rotation. The results show that the greatest centrifugal stresses in the disc occur in the bore at the tips of the trilobe and the greatest contact stresses occur near the transition from the larger to the smaller radius. The centrifugal stress concentrations due to the trilobe were small. Bore deformation and backlash due to differential centrifugal expansion were measured and found to be acceptable for a similar ceramic or nickel alloy disc.

Structures composed of a rotary disk and a shaft, which are fastened with bolts and nuts having tapered bearing surfaces, are loaded with a rotating-bending force. Upon investigation, two rotating mechanisms of the nut were derived. In one mechanism a high-pressure contact area is formed at the nearest loading point on threads and bearing surfaces. This leads to a difference in the curvature radii between the bearing surface of the disk and that of the nut. During the revolution of the disk, two friction torques occur in opposite directions on the bearing surface and the threads, respectively. The relative rotating direction of the nut is dominated by the greater torque. The other mechanism is due to the eccentricities caused by dimensional errors of the bolt, nut, and disk. By combining the two mechanisms, the rotations of the nuts either cause a loosening or tightening after many revolutions of the disk.

A simple analytical approach using conditions of conservation of the mass is proposed for the 1-D “negative squeeze” lubrication problem in order to calculate the cavitation boundary position during oscillatory motion of two plates. The same geometrical case is analyzed using Bonneau’s finite element code. Good agreements between analytical and numerical results support validation of Bonneau’s algorithm. As an example of application of this algorithm to squeeze motion case, the EHD lubrication of an elastic connecting-rod small end bearing is analyzed. This paper presents a simple methodology to evaluate the stiffness and damping coefficients of an engine bearing over a load cycle. A rapid technique is used to determine the shaft ‘limit cycle’ under engine dynamic loads. The proposed theoretical model is based on short and long bearing approximations. The results obtained by present approximation are compared with those obtained by numerical method. The influence of thermal effects on the stiffness and damping coefficients is predicted by using a simplified thermal analysis. In order to illustrate the application of the proposed scheme, one engine main bearing and a connecting rod bearing are analysed.

This paper presents issues related to the adaptive control of the drive system with an elastic clutch connecting the main motor and the load machine. Firstly, the problems and the main algorithms often implemented for the mentioned object are analyzed. Then, the control concept based on the RNN (recurrent neural network) for the drive system with the flexible coupling is thoroughly described. For this purpose, an adaptive model inspired by the Elman model is selected, which is related to internal feedback in the neural network. The indicated feature improves the processing of dynamic signals. During the design process, for the selection of constant coefficients of the controller, the PSO (particle swarm optimizer) is applied. Moreover, in order to obtain better dynamic properties and improve work in real conditions, one model based on the ADALINE (adaptive linear neuron) is introduced into the structure. Details of the algorithm used for the weights’ adaptation are presented (including stability analysis) to perform the shaft torque signal filtering. The effectiveness of the proposed approach is examined through simulation and experimental studies.

In signal cylinder diesel engine we often use dual shaft balance mechanism to balance reciprocating inertia force produced by the piston and moving parts, and reduce vibration of diesel engine. For this paper, the model crank -connecting rod and balance mechanism of a signal cylinder diesel engine were built in simulation software ADAMS. Piston’s movement law and its force curve have got through multi-body dynamics simulation to the model .By further processing to the simulation results, we got curves of piston’s reciprocating inertia force and balance shaft’s balance force. Comparing the two curves, we got the following conclusions: the difference between positive and negative peak for reciprocating inertia force that haven’t balanced was about 5500 Newton, which was equal to around 34% of the difference between the positive and negative peak for reciprocating inertia force, and the main reason for this is the dual shaft balance mechanism only balanced one step reciprocating inertia force; Though the balance effect was quite obvious, for ideal conditions there is a difference, and further improve can be done.

An experiment with tripping and re-connecting a MW wind turbine generator was carried out at the Nøjsomheds Odde wind farm in Denmark. The experimental results are used primarily to validate the shaft system representation of a dynamic wind turbine model. The dynamic wind turbine model is applied in investigations of power system stability with relation to incorporation of large amounts of wind power into the Danish power grid. The simulations and the measurements are found to agree. The experiment was part of a large R&D program started in Denmark to investigate the impact of the increasing capacity of wind power fed into the Danish power grid.

The nonrigidity of the coupling is represented by stiffness and damping coefficients deteriorating speed regulating operations of the system and can be regarded as a two-mass system. The contact between the male and female teeth of involute spline couplings connecting misaligned transmission shafts has been studied using an elastostatic contact model with stick-slip friction based on the boundary integral element method. The effect on the distribution of pressure and on the slip path during shaft rotation, of a wide range of design parameters and of applied torque and misalignment has been explored. The predicted behavior is classified according to the regime of friction (cyclic stick-slip or gross slip) and to that of the pressure history (uniform, cyclic, discontinuous, or toppled). The magnitude of the maximum tooth load, the axial skewness of the distribution of pressure and a maximum wear depth parameter are presented in terms of dimensionless design and operating parameters. The effect of tooth crowning is briefly examined. The results show a number of previously unreported features including a cyclic tooth load—which declines to zero for certain conditions—and an effective slip amplitude of around half the rigid-body value. This may affect the interpretation of laboratory fretting tests.

The Reynolds equation and energy equation with the thermal balance equation in combination were applied to build the thermohydrodynamic (THD) computational model of the dynamically loaded journal bearings. The most popular development platform——Visual C ++ in the field of computer science and the drawing platform of AutoCAD were combined with the medium of ObjectARX and the object oriented programming technology was used, on the basis of which, the visual computational software of the THD lubrication of the dynamically loaded journal bearings for main shaft and connecting rod bearings of automobile engines was developed. The analysis results of an example indicate that the bearing behaviors are closely tied to the radial clearances and inlet lubricant temperature of the bearing.

A full coupling between all these displacements and forces is considered. The maximum rolling element load Qmax, the load distribution Q(Ψ) and the 3-D rolling element load distribution dQ(Ψ, x′) at each roller-race contact slice are also given analytically. It will therefore be possible for bearing users, willing to study for themselves a complete statically indeterminate systems including shafts, housing and bearings, to do such calculations using accurate nonlinear bearing forces-displacements relationships suggested in this paper and to predict easily bearing and other system components performances. This approach can also be implemented in any nonlinear Finite Element Analysis (F.E.A.) package for describing a bearing element connecting the shaft to the housing for example. It completes, therefore, the F.E.A. library of elements.
