This study compared rural youth exposed to gun violence and rural youth not exposed to gun violence on a number of variables: anger, anxiety, dissociation, depression, posttraumatic stress, total trauma, violent behavior, parental monitoring, and levels of violence in the home, school, and community. One-fourth (25%) of the rural youth in this study reported having been exposed to gun violence at least once. Youth exposed to gun violence reported significantly more anger, dissociation, posttraumatic stress, and total trauma. In addition, youth exposed to the violence of guns reported significantly higher levels of violent behaviors and exposure to violence in other settings and also reported lower levels of parental monitoring. The present study contributes to the growing body of literature addressing the stereotype that rural communities are not immune to the violence of firearms. This stereotype acts as a barrier to mental health practice, research, and policy issues in rural communities.

Children who experience trauma due to exposure to domestic violence are at risk of both physical and emotional harm and may exhibit symptoms of trauma that impact their functioning. This raises questions regarding the number of children who do exhibit symptoms and whether child protection workers document these symptoms during the post-investigative stage of service delivery. The present study examines the documentation of child symptoms in a review of 70 files in which children were receiving ongoing child welfare services due to exposure to domestic violence. The results of the file review indicate that children who have been exposed to domestic violence continue to exhibit symptoms during the post-investigative stage. However, there were very few cases in which the child protection worker attributed these symptoms to the trauma the child experienced. Practice implications, including the need for increased training for both trauma and assessment, are discussed.

Exposure to domestic violence is a current, complex concern with negative aftermath on the child's mental health. Aim: to answer the following questions about the effects that this exposure has on children's mental health: a) what should be assessed; b) what kind of psychopathology do outpatient exposed children have; c) which characteristics of the situation are more influential; and d) what is the role of parenting styles. Method: A retrospective cohort design was used; one cohort was formed by battered mothers attending to a special center for battered women and their children, and the other was formed by non-battered women and non-exposed children. Diagnostic interviews, self-reports and questionnaires were applied to mothers and children in order to assess child's functioning, psychopathology, individual and family variables. Logistic regression, ANOVAs, structural equation models, and generalized estimating equations were used for the statistical analysis. Results: An assessment schedule for children exposed to domestic violence is suggested. Outpatient children exposed to domestic violence had specific needs compared with non-exposed outpatients, regarding psychopathology, functional impairment, family and individual variables. Characteristics of the violence, as the type of violence against the mother or the child, the degree of involvement of the child, or the aggressor's characteristics, affected differentially on the child's psychopathology and functioning. Maternal parenting mediated the effects of psychological abuse against the mother on the child's wellbeing, whereas father's parenting did not moderate these effects. Conclusions: Efforts in order to detect and intervene in domestic violence situations should be made in order to improve the child's well-being.

Violence towards healthcare staff is increasingly prevalent in today's NHS. The aim of this thesis was twofold: to establish the current state of research into this problem; and to contribute to the theoretical understanding of one of the common outcomes of this phenomenon: posttraumatic stress disorder. The literature review assessed research relating to the incidence, prevalence and effects of workplace violence (WPV), focussing on healthcare settings. Studies indicate a range of effects on victims including physical injury, behaviour changes and psychological symptoms, although methodological problems exist with this research. Also lacking is an over-arching psychological framework to account for the full effects of WPV. Models accounting for PTSD are described and drawn upon to outline psychological methods necessary to develop such a framework. In the current study, psychological response variables were investigated for their involvement in the development of persistent symptoms of PTSD in 99 NHS staff exposed to violence at work. Factors associated with PTSD symptoms at four months post-trauma included: disorganised memory, data-driven processing, state dissociation, self referent processing, appraisal of PTSD symptoms, trait dissociation and avoidant behaviour. All these factors accounted for significant variance in PTSD symptoms after controlling for pre-trauma and stressor severity factors. A risk index consisting of `educational qualification', `trait dissociation' and 'avoidant behaviour', measured two months post-trauma, discriminated individuals with persistent symptoms at four months post-trauma from those without. This enabled better than chance predictions to be made. Further validation is required. Clinical implications are discussed.

The purpose of the study is to discover whether exposure to domestic violence leads to higher rates of special education placement. The problem of concern is the effect of domestic violence exposure to children, which results in psychological and behavioral problems that may lead to school difficulties and placement in special education programs.

This degree project is a systematic literature review. The aim of this study is to find out what the consequences can be for teachers who are being exposed to student-related violence in their workplace. This is because previous research has shown that there are knowledge gaps regarding this. Furthermore, the aim of this study is to find out whether the consequences for the teachers can vary depending on whether they are exposed to physical or psychological violence by students. The focus will be on teachers in the teaching grade between 1st grade in primary school and the last year of high school. In this systematic literature study, violence between students’ parents and teachers have been excluded. Both qualitative and quantitative studies have been included as a basis. Result showed that consequences for the teachers, which can follow from student-related violence against teachers, include emotional impact, impact on job performance, teacher turnover and reduced confidence in school management. Result also showed that teachers experience similar consequences regardless of whether they are exposed to physical or psychological violence. Future research should focus on the health economic impact in society regarding different consequences experienced by teachers who are exposed to student-related violence, and on both physical and psychological violence when developing better preventive measures.

The level of crime in South Africa as reflected by crime statistics affects a high number of adolescents. Trauma and stress associated with interpersonal violence can adversely affect the neurobiology of the individual, since social, emotional and cognitive influences interact in multifaceted ways with neurobiological systems to affect every-day adaptive functioning. This study was embarked upon to determine the difference in the expression of personality between adolescents exposed to community related interpersonal violence and those not exposed to such violence. The 183 research participants were selected from a group of 335 grade 12 learners from a single secondary school in a middle class community. The participants were placed into two sample groups by means of purposive sampling as follows: Sample 1 consisted of all the research participants that reported exposure to community related interpersonal violence during the past 5 years on the self-reporting questionnaire (n = 93). The research participants that did not report exposure to such violence formed Sample 2 (n = 90). Reflecting on the adolescent’s emotional, adaptive functioning and referring to high levels of anxiety and feelings of worthlessness, certain factors of the 16PF questionnaire were predicted to show a statistical significant difference after exposure to community related interpersonal violence after a period of 3 to 5 years. To assess the differences in personality profiles of adolescents exposed to community related interpersonal violence and those not exposed to violence, a MANOVA was used in analysing 16PF results. There were statistically significant differences between the two groups on Factor G (rule consciousness), Factor I (emotional sensitivity) and Factor Q4 (anxiety). This indicated that adolescents exposed to incidents of community related interpersonal violence are inclined to experience more tension, are emotional volatile, depressed and anxious. They tend to be more sensitive to environmental stressors and are likely to give up easily. The group exposed to interpersonal violence (Sample 1) experienced higher levels of PTSD as assessed with the PSD Questionnaire than the group that was not exposed to interpersonal violence (sample 2). The personality profiles of three groups (Sample 1 with high PTSD, Sample 1 with low PTSD and Sample 2) were compared by means of a MANOVA to test whether adolescents who experience high levels of PTSD express their personality different from others. The results identify differences in the expression of personality between adolescents of Sample 1 experiencing higher levels of PTSD and the adolescents who did not experience community related interpersonal violence (sample 2) on Factors G- (Selfindulgent and disregards obligations to people), I + ( Perception might be emotionally influenced) and Q4 + (Elevated levels of anxiety). The coping style (positive or negative coping) of adolescents exposed to community related interpersonal violence was assessed using the Kidcope. This was done to examine the possible influence of coping on the development of posttraumatic stress and differences in the expression of personality. There were no correlations between positive and negative coping and the level of PTSD symptoms and the 16PF. The research could therefore not identify coping as a medicating variable in the development of PTSD and differences in the expression of personality. However, research is required to evaluate coping closer to the time of the actual event. The results of this research are a clear indication that the experience of community-related violence has serious implications for the well-being and development of the personality of adolescents. Violence-exposed adolescents may experience symptoms characteristic of PTSD, including significant difficulty regulating one’s emotions and behaviour impacting on their social, cognitive, physiological and emotional functioning. The original target group for this study was the middle class income population and suburb with relatively good security. The sample was drawn from a typical middleclass environment and adolescents from communities with less protection may present different results if sampled for similar research.

Using case studies and interviews, this study investigated the negative effects of violence against disabled individuals. Twenty girls who were visually and physically disabled completed a questionnaire designed to investigate the consequences that resulted from exposure to violence. The research was conducted in June 2019. The study participants were visually and physically disabled girls who had been exposed to violence. The participants were from the “Alaml Institute” in Misr Elgdida area, Cairo, Egypt. The two participants studied in this paper were deliberately chosen because their previous exposure to violence has resulted in behavioral and psychological disorders. The researcher pursued a clinical approach to study each individual’s personality in-depth. The results revealed that the most harmful effects and psychological problems resulting from exposure to violence were social withdrawal, aggression, tension, anxiety, bitterness, and hatred. The researcher recommends that psychological support, including counseling and psychotherapy, be offered to disabled girls who are exposed to external aggression. Furthermore, there is a need for reinforcing the psychological culture among adolescents, especially the psychology of adolescent girls with disabilities.

Violence is a problematic phenomenon that has a global impact on both individuals and societies. From the reporting aspect of the news to the composition of television programs, violence has taken over the media. Considering the forms of violence in both social media and mainstream media, the use of language is observed to resemble a favor to the ones who commit these acts of violence, not the ones who are subject to it. Accessibility of the events occurring at any given moment within or outside of the border of individuals and the changing realities is a necessity. All these changes in our daily lives cause paradigm shifts, change the way we live, act, or understand for better or for worse as we are exposed. Media and the news, the prominent mediums of this exposure to life, manifest our current way of thinking and also play a significant role in creating the mindset that is determined to have been socially down the line. In this study, femicide cases that have drawn attention, under the spotlight of mainstream media and social media journalism from 2009 to 2020, providing a platform for individuals to report real-life events amateurly, and adopted the use of language by mainstream media and social media journalists, will be analyzed using content analysis method. Moreover, changes in the use of language adopted by mainstream media and the effects of these uses in the scope of the way we live, act, or understand will be argued.

Experiencing a speedy strain or acceleration causes Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) that can be classified into mild, moderate and severe, based on the level of the injury. Motor vehicles crashes; violence related injuries; collisions in sports; and falls are most common causes of TBI. Moreover in the military service TBI can be happened when soldiers are exposed to shock waves due to blasts or because of ballistic impact.

Introduction:Internationally, eight out of ten children are exposed to violent discipline by their caregivers. To reduce the prevalence of violent discipline against children, we should understand the social and economic factors that affect the choice of disciplinary methods. Despite the high prevalence of violent discipline in the Middle East and North African (MENA) region, only a few studies explored disciplinary methods in this region. Aim: This study aims to determine the prevalence of positive and violent disciplinary practices in five selected MENA countries and assess their association with household head education and beliefs of physical punishment. Methods: This is a cross-sectional study design based on available secondary data from the Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey on its fourth round (MICS-4). A child was selected randomly from the household, and the Parent-Child Conflict Scale (CTSPC) tool was used to report disciplinary methods the child encountered during the last month period preceding the survey. Univariate and multivariable logistic regression were used to investigate the association between disciplinary practices with household head education and respondent's beliefs of physical punishment. The analysis was conducted using pooled data from all selected surveys and also for individual countries. Result: The overall prevalence of positive discipline was only 15% (95% CI: 14.4-15.8), in the five countries, while the prevalence of violent discipline was 80% (95% CI: 79.0 -80.5). The prevalence of positive discipline was highest in Qatar (40%; 95% CI: 35.0-44.4) and lowest in Tunisia (5%; 95% CI: 4.3-5.9) while the prevalence of violent discipline was highest in Tunisia (93%; 95% CI: 92.1-94.1), and lowest in Qatar (50%; 95% CI: 44.7-55.0). Overall, the household head education was not significantly associated with either positive or violent discipline after adjusting for covariates. However, respondents believe of disciplinary methods was significantly associated with both positive and violent discipline (OR=5.88; 95% CI: 4.97-6.96) and (OR=6.27; 95% CI: 5.40-7.28), respectively. Conclusion: High rates of violent discipline in the MENA region might indicate an increase in mental, behavioral, and social problems and disorders in our future generation. Rapid action is needed to reduce the worsening of violent discipline, and it is consequences. There is a need for educational programs for caregivers to teach them alternative non-violent methods of discipline. Besides, these numbers should inform policymakers about the importance of the existence and the implementations of laws, policies, and regulations to protect children from all forms of violence to protect our future youths and ensure their health and wellbeing.

Ragging is a deep-seated long-lasting social practice found in the state university system of Sri Lanka. Considering the negative, damaging impacts on physical, psychological, social, cognitive and behavioural aspects of undergraduates, it has been identified as a punishable offence under the Prohibition of Ragging and other forms of violence in educational institutions Act, No. 20 of 1998. Despite the array of harmful effects, ragging has evolved during the past five decades and sustained thus far amidst severe punishments imposed. The objective of the current study was to identify the underlying deep-rooted reasons behind sustenance of ragging in state universities with reference to a selected university (UOX) in Colombo, Sri Lanka. In-depth interviews were conducted with a heterogeneous sample (n=20) of volunteers. The study exposed an interconnected feeding system comprised of a minority of significant personnel among freshers, seniors, student unions, staff, administration, industry and political parties who play a decisive role in justifying the need and thereby support the sustenance of ragging. These findings may enable university authorities to find creative and innovative solutions to combat this menace to create a conducive academic environment for the future student community of State Universities in Sri Lanka.

Pandemic of virus COVID-19 posed numerous and unprecedented challenges to citizens and authorities which required shift in behavior and actions of all segments of society. Representing Ombudsmen Institution of Bosnia and Herzegovina, authors shared their experience in monitoring implementation of the decisions of all levels of government and presented challenges in striking the right balance between interests of public health and protection of rights of vulnerable groups. Public authorities in Bosnia and Herzegovina have passed emergency measures aimed at containing the spread of virus, but some of them failed to maintain human rights standards. Following the decisions of crisis centers to limit the freedom of movement, it was necessary to secure rights of children to education, protection from domestic violence and neglect in the family context. In introducing online education, authorities were asked to adapt recognition and grading system to the children in different conditions and circumstances, especially to the children with difficulties in development, children living in poverty and on margins of society such as Roma children or those living in institutions. Ombudsmen Institution registered increase in the number of domestic violence cases because measures limiting freedom of movement had impact on victims' ability to seek help from trusted sources, usually members of immediate family or representatives of law enforcement agencies. Having in mind that large number of citizens could not afford access to the official gazettes in any form, Ombudsmen requested that all enacted legislation be accessible online recommended that the decision banning reporters from conferences be reconsidered, guided by the right of citizens to be informed of their government actions. Examining the practice of placing COVID stickers on mail by the Post Office, Ombudsmen issued recommendation to stop such practice as it was deemed disproportional to the right to privacy and protection of personal data, while the protection of postal workers could have been ensured by other protective measures. It also became evident that national budgetary capacities had to be increased in order to prevent deterioration in provision of basic public services such as health and social protection, since economic consequences of the pandemic were disproportionally felt by the groups exposed to poverty, such as Roma, refugees or migrants. Drawing conclusion from concrete cases, authors offer review of particular emergency measures, analyze their adequacy, justifiability and timeliness, while presenting authorities’ response to Ombudsmen’s findings in formulating more adequate and efficient but, at the same time, least intrusive measures taken in response to the disaster. In search of common response to such widespread phenomenon, governments should recognize the intention of Ombudsmen Institutions to be in „permanent session“ over protection of vulnerable groups and should more actively involve it in discussions on emergency measures and their effect on human rights and freedoms. It proved to be better suited to act quickly, to apply more effective remedies and to correct government actions thanks to its knowledge of the local context than traditional institutions for protection of human rights, such as constitutional courts, international courts or treaty bodies.

This Working Paper analyses how violent conflict can enhance or reduce pre-existing forms of marginalisation and second, how new forms of marginalisation emerge as a result of violent conflict. To do so, we focus on the province of Tanganyika in the DRC, where the so-called ‘Twa-Bantu’ violent conflict has been disrupting the education sector since 2012, and secondarily on the province of Ituri, which has been affected by repeated armed conflicts since the 1990s. We use a mixed methods approach, combining quantitative data collection methods and several months of qualitative fieldwork. The study shows that the political marginalisation of ethno-territorial groups is key in understanding marginalisation from education in contexts of protracted conflict. Our results show that the Twa minority of Tanganyika has not only been more exposed to violence during the Twa-Bantu conflict, but also that exposure to violence has more severe effects on the Twa in terms of educational outcomes. We analyse key mechanisms, in particular spatial segregation, and the social segregation of schools along ethnic/identity lines. We also analyse the interaction between ethno-cultural marginalisation and economic, social and gender-related marginalisation.

This review is largely based on grey literature, in particular policy documents and reports by international development organizations. While there was substantial literature on approaches and principles to GBV documentation, there was less on remote service delivery such as helplines – much of this only in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition, very little was found on actual examples of GBV documentation in developing contexts. By definition, gender featured strongly in the available literature; the particular needs of persons with disabilities were also addressed in discussions of overall GBV responses, but far less in GBV documentation. GBV documentation refers to the recording of data on individual GBV incidents in order to provide/refer survivors with/to appropriate support, and the collection of data of GBV incidents for analysis and to improve GBV responses. The literature notes that there are significant risks associated with GBV documentation, in relation to data protection. Failure to ensure information security can expose survivors, in particular, to harm, e.g. reprisal attacks by perpetrators, stigma, and ostracism by their families/ communities. This means that GBV documentation must be carried out with great care. A number of principles should always be applied when documenting GBV cases in order to protect survivors and prevent potential negative effects: do no harm, survivor-centered approach, survivor autonomy, informed consent, non-discrimination, confidentiality, and data protection (information security).

The theme of this special collection of papers, the lived experiences of women who belong to religious minorities, has been a blind spot both in international development policy engagement and in much of the international scholarship on women, security and peace. Women who belong to religious minorities, who are socioeconomically excluded and are vulnerable to multiple sources of gender-based violence in Pakistan seem to have fallen through the cracks of the ‘leave no one behind’ agenda. The aim of this volume is to shed light on the day-to-day experiences of women and their families who belong to the Ahmadiyya, Christian, Hindu and Hazara Shia religious minorities in Pakistan. Each of the papers in this collection exposes the complexity of the intersections of gender, class and religious marginality in shaping the realities for women from these religious minorities.
