Thirty patients were examined, selected and individual impression made. After the impressions made, the casts were mounted in a special apparathus the Gnathothensiometer to measure the differences among three different centric relation techniques. Technique 1 - A bite rim, refined with zinc-oxide-eugenol. Technique 2 - A bite rim, refined with zinc-oxide-eugenol plus a jig. Technique 3 - A bite frame with gauze and zinc-oxide-eugenol. According to the measurements, the technique more accurate, for register the centric relations, seem to be the one using the frame of Jones (Technique nº 3).

The large-scale steel dome construction method is studied in the paper. Combined with Shandong province museum of steel construction dome, the piecewise processing methods are determined. According to the type of weight component chose lifting equipment types and model, aiming at the actual situation of construction formulated the steel structure installation overall process, the stress of the bed-jig to install a performance is calculated, and the steel frame column installation method is studied. The engineering experience and research content in the paper can provide a reference for the similar engineering.

This research aims to develop a method to efficiently reduce the body input force from the chassis due to road-induced excitation. To this end, the frequency response function–based substructuring method is employed to model the vehicle cross member and coupling points. Using this model, the dynamic stiffness modification factor of elastic bushing at the effective path is predicted for reducing road noise. Because of the difficulties in directly obtaining dynamic properties of body mount bushings pressured into the sub-frame, the frequency response function–based substructuring model and inverse formulation method are used to indirectly estimate the bushing’s dynamic properties. Therefore, the primary focus of this study is to validate the feasibility of using the inverse formulation method for deriving road noise improvement factor on a simple cross member application. In this feasibility validation, road excitation is simply substituted with a shaker excitation in vertical direction. The previously developed suspension rig that enables a direct measurement of the body input force at the coupling points and the specially developed cross member jig are used for the validation test.

Анотація:
The multidisciplinary design optimization is suitable for modern large aircraft, and it has the potential in conceptual phase of aircraft design especially. An integrated optimization method considering the disciplines of aerodynamics, structure and stability for large aircraft design in conceptual phase is presented. The objective is the minimum stiffness of a beam-frame wing structure subject to aeroelasticity, aerodynamics, and stability constraints. The aeroelastic responses are computed by commercial software MSC. Nastran, and the cruise stability is evaluated by the linear small-disturbance equations. A viscous-inviscid iteration method, which is composed of a computational fluid dynamics tool solving the Euler equations and a viscous correction method, is used for computing the flow over the model. The method ensures effective and rapid computation. In this paper, a complete aircraft model is optimized, and all the responses are computed in the trim condition with a fixed maximum takeoff weight. Genetic algorithm is utilized for global optimizations, and the optimal jig shape, the elastic axis positions and the stiffness distribution can be attained adequately. The results show that the method has a value of application in engineering optimizations. For the satisfaction of the total drag and stability constraints, the structure weight usually needs a price to pay. The integrated optimization captures the tradeoff between aerodynamics, structure and stability, and the repeated design can be avoided.

This work aims to the design of a carbon fiber bicycle frame with production technology suitable for piece production. The work summarizes the methods of production of composite frames and important parameters that must be respected when designing the frame. A Gravel frame was chosen for the design. The frame was designed for production using stainless steel printed lugs with glued composite tubes. The proposed solution was strength tested. The work also contains a design of a production jig for the construction of bicycle frames.

The handling behavior is a complex system influenced by many parameters. While many components can improve the comfort or performances of a mountain bike, the frame stays the main component that will define its handling. Indeed, as explained in this report literature review, each geometrical parameters of the frame influences greatly the bicycle handling. Every rider being different in anatomy or style of riding, it is necessary to adapt the frame to each rider to reach the best level of performances. The core of the tailor-made manufacturing of a bicycle is the positioning and holding of the tubes relatively to each other, a process that is carried via the use of a customizable welding-jig. This report analyses the current welding-jigs available on the market and describes in details the design and manufacturing of a unique welding-jig for tailor-made bicycle frame for Nicolai GmBH, a German company specialized in the manufacturing of high end bicycle frames. In addition, this report introduces the reader to an internet form listing all the combination of the bicycle industry’s standards used by Nicolai GmBH. This internet form has for purpose to facilitate the understanding of the customer willing to buy a tailor-made bicycle frame. The welding-jig has been designed on the Computer Aided Design software SolidWorks and is made of an assembly of Bosch Rexroth aluminum extruded profiles and their standard accessories and parts machined at Nicolai GmBH. Besides ensuring the positioning and holding of the different elements of a bicycle frame, it has the particularity to: - Display every geometrical parameter of a bicycle frame. - Be able to build a broad range of bicycle frame sizes. - Give an easy access to all the parts of the frame to the welder. - Reduce the number of aligning process in the manufacturing of a bicycle frame. - Be easily movable. This report presents also the calibration process of the welding jig and the description of its setting process. The welding-jig presented in this report has been tested successfully at Nicolai GmBH for the manufacturing of a hardtail bicycle frame. It is also highly appreciated by the technicians and engineer using it.

Denna rapport analyserar de svetsjiggar som finns tillgängliga på marknaden och beskriver I detalj designen och tillverkningen av en unik jig som tillverkas av Nicolai GmBH, ett tyskt företag som är specialiserade på tillverkningen av high-end cykelramar. Syfte: Denna studie syftade till att undersöka hur vanligt det var med smärtrelaterade symptom på ett företag, hur levnadsvanorna för de anställda ser ut och vilka samband som finns mellan levnadsvanor och självupplevda besvär och arbetsförmåga. Metod: För denna studie valdes en kvantitativ metod med hjälp av en enkät. Frågorna till denna enkät valdes ut från validerade frågor ifrån tidigare studier. Frågorna innehöll bl.a. vikt, längd, civilstånd, utbildning, smärtrelaterade symptom i 9 områden totalt på kroppen (bl.a. nacke, axlar, knän m.m.), kost, fysisk aktivitet (mätt med Saltin-Grimby skalan), sömnkvalitet, stress och självupplevd arbetsförmåga. Först jämfördes män och kvinnor sinsemellan och när samband mellan levnadsvanor och olika besvär skulle undersökas, jämfördes hela populationen. Företaget som studien genomfördes specialiserar sig på tillverkning av hytter och andra systemkomponenter till anläggningsmaskiner. Deras produktionsprocess består av svets, målning och montering. Resultat: Totalt deltog 155 i studien, varav 130 var män, 24 kvinnor och en deltagare som inte angav sitt kön. Resultaten visade att både män respektive kvinnor hade ett genomsnittligt BMI på 27 och 26, vilket motsvarar övervikt för båda könen. Både män och kvinnor uppgav att de rörde på mycket och mindre än en femtedel uppgav en stillasittande fritid, motsvarande Saltin-Grimby grad 1 av 4. Båda könen uppgav goda matvanor, med lågt intag av sötsaker såsom chips, choklad/godis m.m. Dock åt nästan en femtedel av både män och kvinnor fiber mindre än 1 gång/vecka. Nästan hälften av alla deltagare hade dåliga sömnvanor, mätt med hjälp av PSQI (Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index), där en sammanlagd poäng av 5 poäng eller mer är en indikation till dåliga sömnvanor. Minst 12 % av samtliga deltagare i studien hade haft ont under de senaste 7 dagarna. Avseende samband, så sågs att de som hade dåliga sömnvanor upplevde mer stress, mer smärta, angav en sämre arbetsförmåga och skattade sin fysiska och psykiska hälsa lägre. De som angav lägre fysisk aktivitetsnivå (väldigt få) uppvisade inga samband med ökad smärta eller stress. Slutsats: Fysisk aktivitet hade i denna studie inte något samband med någon upplevd smärta, stress eller arbetsförmåga, men upplevelsen av den fysiska hälsan var lägre hos dem som uppgav sig vara mer fysiskt inaktiva. Däremot visade denna studie på ett samband mellan hur bra man sover och hur man upplever sin arbetsförmåga, sin upplevda hälsa, stressnivåer och smärtrelaterade symptom.

Syfte och frågeställningar Syftet är att undersöka hur idrottslärare i grundskolan bedriver och utformar sin simundervisning.
    Vilka möjligheter eller hinder anser idrottslärare påverkar deras simundervisning? Hur gör idrottslärare för att alla elever ska nå kunskapskraven i simning? Hur konkretiserar idrottslärare kunskapskraven i simning? Metod Denna studie består av intervjuer utförda med sex idrottslärare på grundskolan. Intervjuerna var riktat öppna och hade förutbestämda frågeområden. För att hitta intervjupersoner skedde först ett handplockat urval av kommuner i Stockholmsområdet, sedan ett slumpmässigt urval för att få fram skolorna. Lärarna kontaktades sedan via mail. Alla intervjuer skedde på skolorna där lärarna själva arbetade. Intervjuerna spelades in och transkriberades sedan. De valda teoretiska ramverken för denna studie är ramfaktorteori och Lindes teori om de tre utbildningsarenorna. Resultat Utöver sin ordinarie simundervisning erbjuder alla skolor någon form av extra undervisning för de elever som är i behov av det, ofta i form av simskola men också rest- och extratillfällen. Gällande de två kunskapskraven i simning råder det skillnader mellan lärarna i avseende hur de tolkar och betygsätter, både mellan och inom respektive kunskapskrav. Lärarna i studien är dock ganska eniga om tolkningen och betygsättningen av kunskapskravet gällande simkunnighet, medan hur de tolkar och betygsätter det andra kunskapskravet om nödsituationer vid vatten skiljer sig mer åt. Simundervisningen verkar framförallt styras av ramfaktorer, såsom tid, avstånd till simanläggning, ekonomi och ledning.    Sammanfattning Simundervisningen verkar inte ha ändrats allt för mycket jämfört med när vi själva gick i skolan. Hur idrottslärare bedriver sin simundervisning tycks bero på hur lärarna tolkar kunskapskraven och utformningen styrs framför allt av ramfaktorer, såsom tid, avstånd till simanläggning, ekonomi och ledning.
    Aim The aim of this study is to investigate how teachers in physical education (PE) in primary school practise and shape their swimming education.
      What possibilities or obstacles do PE teachers think affects their swimming education? How do PE teachers make sure that every student reach the knowledge requirements in swimming? How do PE teachers concretize the knowledge requirements in swimming? Method This study consists of interviews with six primary school teachers in PE. The interviews were direct-open and had predetermined question areas. To find teachers to interview we first did a hand-picked selection to single out the municipalities, then we did random samples in each municipality to find schools. The teachers were then contacted by email. All interviews took place at the school were the teacher in question worked. The interviews were then recorded and transcribed. The theoretical frameworks we have chosen for this study are frame factor theory and Linde’s theory of the three domains of education. Results A part from their ordinary swimming education, all schools offer some sort of extra education for those students who are in need of it. When it comes to the two knowledge requirements in swimming there are differences between the teachers in how they interpret and grade, both between and within each knowledge requirement. The teachers in the study, however, are quite unanimous about the interpretation and grading of the knowledge requirement about swimming ability. They are not as unanimous about the other knowledge requirement about emergency situations in water. Swimming education seems to be controlled by frame factors such as time, distance to a swimming facility, economy and management. Summary Swimming education appears to be the same now as it was when we were in primary school. How PE teachers practise their swimming education seems to depend on interpretation of the knowledge requirements. The shape is mainly regulated by frame factors, such as time, distance to a swimming facility, economy and management.

Mitt arbete har handlat om att ta fram en mall för att skriva en egen vistext. För att börja mitt arbete ville jag ta reda på hur jag definierar en visa, om jag kan skilja texten och musiken åt i en visa och hur jag kan definiera vad jag tycker är ”bra”. Jag upptäckte att det inte fanns så mycket material att hitta kring hur jag skulle kunna gå tillväga för att skriva en egen vistext. Därför blev syftet med mitt arbete att svara på dessa frågeställningar: ”Vilka gemensamma nämnare finns det i de vistexter jag själv anser är ”bra”?” och ”Hur skulle en mall kunna se ut för att skriva en vistext, baserat på de gemensamma nämnarna?” Som metod valde jag att analysera texterna i fyra visor som jag själv tycker om. Dessa analyserade jag med hjälp av de så kallade metafunktionerna. De fyra visor jag valde var Trubbel, Flickan och kråkan, I den stora sorgens famn och Är du fortfarande arg. Mitt resultat blev att det fanns en del gemensamma nämnare i texterna hos de fyra visor jag analyserat. Det fanns likheter i användning av rim, melodirepetition, användning av jag/du perspektivet och att ha med någonting som berör i texten. De gemensamma nämnare använde jag mig sedan av som en mall för att skriva en egen vistext. Min egen visa blev en sång som jag själv tycker väldigt mycket om. Visan som jag skrev utifrån min analys visade på att det går att skapa en mall för att skriva en vistext. Att arbeta med att skapa mallen gav mig också en bättre överblick över min egen skaparprocess och varför jag skapar. Chapter 3 approaches the cinema of Jia Zhangke from two angles: first, a complex mechanism of multivalent and metanarrative subject positions in and beyond the cinematic frame compels the spectator to a highly active and conscious process of taking up history and image critically; second, it proposes the concept of “surface” to highlight Jia’s cinematic texture through various figurations of superficial time and superficial space in Xiao Wu, Platform, Unknown Pleasures and Still Life. Lou Ye’s highly expressionist and kinetic works conflate screen subjectivities with directorial and spectatorial ones. An analysis of two films by Lou Ye, Suzhou River and Purple Butterfly, demonstrates that, despite the two auteurs’ difference in style, they share a highly comparable epistemological interest in the relationship between history, representation and subjectivity.

Chapter 1 provides background for understanding the contentious interethnic relations explored in the book. It details Miami’s turbulent Jim Crow history, the historical forces that brought Cubans to Miami, and the clashes that would arise between white Anglos, Cubans, and African-Americans. The chapter illustrates how racist forces and ideologies of worthy citizenship imposed a strict separation between the categories of “African-American” and “Cuban,” and “black” and “white” in Miami, despite the actual heterogeneity of people placed in these categories. The chapter argues that three dominant race-making frames involved in the creation of worthy citizenship, traditionally utilized by whites to divide themselves from groups of color, become useful for racialized groups when they are faced with political, economic, and social instability. Using the case of Miami, the chapter illuminates how histories of white colonial and settler domination, and ideologies that justify such domination, are connected to interethnic conflict writ large.

This chapter frames the nineteenth century borderlands as a theater of movement that had long been marked by imperial contestations and diverse migrations. Native American, colonial, Mexican, and American migrations shaped the region, keeping territorial boundaries porous, and racial and national identities blurred. Following the transformation of the indigenous borderlands to a capitalist borderlands, the chapter traces the seismic demographic shift that drove the region’s rapid industrialization; as the borderlands connected into national, transnational, and global circuits of migration, and oceanic lines fed back into railway connections, white, black, Mexican, and Chinese immigrants descended on the border from all directions. Focusing on the multiple boundaries that intersected at the El Paso-Ciudad Juárez border – namely, the international boundary as well as the limits of Jim Crow that ended where Texas met New Mexico – this chapter shows how and why the late 19th century borderlands looked so promising for these diverse groups. It begins to develop a transborder framework for understanding immigration, emphasizing how the narrowing of economic opportunities, political rights, and social freedoms in both the United States and Mexico contributed to such diverse men and women coming together in the borderlands.

This chapter traces rhetorical and political history of imprisonment before and after the birth of Black Power, focusing on major moments of activist imprisonment as well as movement discourses written from prison. In charting the role of prison in the movement, the chapter also discusses the emergence and legitimacy of Black Power as a slogan, as a theoretical device, and as a series of rhetorical strategies designed to be a particularly historical intervention into the stagnating discourses of “civil rights” and “law and order.” This chapter contends that incarceration became a major strategy used by both black activists and white conservatives during the Black Power era; consequently, the period following 1966 marked a new phase of Jim Crow as Black Power became a rallying cry against state repression. This chapter suggests that the legitimacy of Black Power as a term of art, as a series of vernacular signs, and as an organizing principle in a new phase of the black liberation movement, hinged upon whether the state or the activists controlled the frame and how closely it became associated with violence. Because the Black Power slogan and ideology were articulated by activists with extensive rap sheets as the state circumscribed their activism, Black Power ideology took up the relationship between state repression and incarceration as a place to excavate new arenas for the black liberation struggle, particularly in the memoirs of movement activists.

Анотація:
The design, fabrication and preliminary assessment of novel metal reinforced ceramic matrix composite (CMC) materials are reported in this study. The design is based on the assumption that the metallic reinforcing structure can increase the work of fracture through the action of wire pullout, crack deflection and plastic deformation. In particular, the current CMC is composed of a molybdenum wire structure within a 7.5 wt% yttria-stabilized zirconia (7YSZ) ceramic matrix (Mo/YSZ). A unique jig is designed to assist the fabrication of the Mo mesh. Subsequently a NiCrAlY bond coat and finally a 7YSZ matrix are applied to the Mo mesh structure using a plasma spray technique. The as-fabricated and heat treated Mo/YSZ are subjected to impact and 3-point bend tests. The impact testing results show that heat treatment after spraying increases the impact energy possibly due to the improved bonding between Mo, NiCrAlY and 7YSZ. During 3-point bend testing, the incorporation of Mo mesh in 7YSZ increases the load at yield point, the peak load and the displacement to failure. After isothermal and cyclic oxidation tests at 1050°C for 330 hours, the Mo/YSZ CMC is examined under optical and scanning electron microscopes (SEM). The results show that the NiCrAlY bond coat delaminates from the Mo wire and also forms radial cracks during the spraying process. It is for this reason that the Mo wire suffers from rapid oxidization during isothermal and cyclic oxidation tests, causing separation of the reinforcement from the 7YSZ matrix. Future improvement to the current process will be to select and deposit a more effective oxidation resistant coating on the Mo wire in order to allow the metal frame-reinforced CMC concept to achieve the desired chemical and mechanical properties at high temperatures.

Sail forces were measured in a full-scale sailing boat with the use of a sail force dynamometer. This apparatus consisted of an aluminum frame fixed to the hull by way of several load cells. The sailing boat was modified so that the dynamometer frame could be installed inside the hull. The mast, stays, winches, and other sailing rig were fixed on the frame so as to transmit all the forces acting on sail to the frame. By transforming the measured forces, the lift force, drag force, thrust, side force, or the center of effort of the sail force could be obtained. The sailing conditions of the boat, such as the boat speed, heel angle, wind speed, wind angle, and so on, were also measured. Sail shapes of the boat in the up-wind condition were also measured with the use of CCD cameras installed in the boat. The sail shape images taken by the cameras were transformed to bit-map files, and then processed by an SSA-2D, a sail shape analyzing software. With the use of this software, sail shape parameters were obtained. The relationship between the measured sail forces and the sail shape parameters is discussed in this paper. Moreover, the measured sail shapes were used as the input data for the numerical calculations. Numerical calculations were performed to estimate the sail forces of the boat. In the calculations, two sails, a mainsail and a jib , were modeled in the form of a vortex lattice. The vortex lattice method was adopted as the numerical calculation method. Step by step calculations were conducted up to attaining the steady state of the sail in steady wind. Calculated sail forces were compared with the measured forces, and the validity of the numerical method was studied.

With this first deepwater buoy application, a new mooring chain fatigue mechanism was discovered. High pretension levels combined with significant mooring chain motions caused interlink rotations that generated significant Out of Plane Bending (OPB) fatigue loading. Traditionally, interlink rotations are relatively harmless and generate low bending stresses in the chain links. The intimate mating contact that occurs due to the plastic deformation during the proof loading and the high pretension of the more contemporary mooring designs have been identified as aggravating factors for this phenomenon. A Joint Industry Project (JIP), gathering 26 different companies, was started in 2007 to better understand the Out of Plane Bending (OPB) mooring chain fatigue mechanism and to propose mooring chain fatigue design recommendations. This paper summarizes the quasi static OPB stiffness measurement campaign and the post processing work to derive the OPB interlink stiffness.

This paper presents a state-of-the-art methodology to build a numerical hydro-mechanical model of a floating LNG Terminal with a LNG carrier moored alongside, complying with the physical mechanical behavior and hydrodynamic phenomenology involved in such a complex system. The required numerical functions are available for intensive engineering applications in the PRINCIPIA’s software DIODORE™ dedicated to sea-keeping and mooring analysis. The methodology has been validated by comparison with non-captive model tests in IFREMER basin in the frame of the SALT 2 JIP led by PRINCIPIA. The paper describes first the academic side-by-side case that has been tested in basin, associated with the comparison between the experimental results and the numerical application using DIODORE™. In a second step, the main physical parameters of the simulation are analyzed and some gained insights are exposed.

Lastly, this paper provides a summary of the main steps in a framework for OPB fatigue calculation guidelines.

The aluminum alloy 6061-T6 is a material used for some part of experimental reactor for its interesting physical and mechanical proprieties. To respect the European rules on pressure equipments, a material must present some minimal characteristics for toughness and ductility. In particular, a preventive analysis against abrupt break can be performed in order to ensure the integrity of the structure. In this frame, some characterizations of the toughness were undertaken. Some tests present singular propagation at the beginning of the crack propagation. These singular crack propagation brings some difficulties in the interpretation of the testing and in the J0,2BL/JIC determination. It is the reason why a benchmark on the determination of this value for such material was organized between three different laboratories: the LISN of the French atomic commission (CEA), the LC2M of the CEA and the CESMAN of the DCNS industry. All participants receive a piece of the same material and realize some toughness testing according to its own usage. The benchmark allows comparing the different experimental methodology (machining specimen, pre-crack, testing conditions, equipments …) and the interpretation methodology (ASTM 1820 and ISO 12135 application). This leads to propose a list of recommendations on the realization of the toughness testing and more specifically some necessary adaptation of the ASTM 1820 and ISO 12135 standard for such material.

The influence of the gas-to-liquid density ratio (DR) on the global wave shape before impact is studied through numerical simulations of the propagation of two different waves in a rectangular wave canal. Two different codes are used: the first one, named FSID, is a highly non-linear 2D bi-fluid potential code initially developed in the frame of SLOSHEL JIP (Kaminski et al. (2011)) to simulate incompressible inviscid free-surface flows without surface tension thanks to a desingularized technique and series of conformal mappings; the second one, named CADYF, is a bi-fluid high-fidelity front-tracking software developed by Ecole Polytechnique Montreal to simulate separated two-phase incompressible viscous flows with surface tension. The first studied wave leads to a flip-through impact while the second one leads to a large gas-pocket impact. Each condition is studied with water and three different gases with increasing densities corresponding to DR = 0.001, 0.003 and 0.005. The global wave shapes are compared a few tenths of second before the impact, before free surface instabilities triggered by the shearing gas flow have developed and also before any gas compressibility matters. Both codes give precisely the same global wave shapes. Whatever the condition studied, it is shown that DR has an influence on these global wave shapes. The trends observed from the simulations are the same as those described in Karimi et al. (2016) obtained from sloshing model tests with Single Impact Waves (SIW) in a 2D tank with a low filling level. A small part of the mechanical energy of the liquid is progressively given to the gas. The larger the DR, the larger this transfer of energy from the liquid to the gas. This explains an increasing delay of the wave front for increasing DRs.

In 2000 the first case of pipeline walking (PW) was properly documented when this phenomenon seriously impacted a North Sea high pressure and high temperature (HP/HT) pipeline (Tornes et al. 2000). By then, the main drivers of this problem were accordingly identified for the case studied. On the other hand, to study other aspects related not only to PW, the industry joined forces in the SAFEBUCK Joint Industry Project (JIP) with academic partners. As a result, other drivers, which lead a pipeline to walk, have been identified (Bruton et al. 2010). Nowadays, during the design stage of pipelines, estimates are calculated for pipeline walking. These estimates often use a Rigid-Plastic (RP) soil idealization and the Coulomb friction principle (Carr et al. 2006). Unfortunately, this model does not reflect the real pipe-soil interaction behavior, and in practice time consuming finite element computations are often performed using an Elastic-Perfectly-Plastic (EPP) soil model. In reality, some observed axial pipe-soil responses are extremely non-linear and present a brittle peak strength before a strain softening response (White et al. 2011). This inaccuracy of the soil representation normally overestimates the Walking Rate (WR) (a rigid plastic soil model leads to greater walking). A magnified WR invariably leads to false interpretations besides being unrealistic. Finally, a distorted WR might also demand mitigating measures that could be avoided if the soil had been adequately treated. Unnecessary mitigation has a very strong and negative effect on the project as whole. It will require more financial and time investments for the entire development of the project — from design to construction activities. Therefore, having more realistic and pertinent estimates becomes valuable not only because of budgetary issues but also because of time frame limits. The present paper will show the results of a set of Finite Element Analyses (FEA) performed for a case-study pipeline. The analyses — carried out on ABAQUS software — used a specific subroutine code prepared to appropriately mimic Non-Linear Brittle Peak with Strain Softening (NLBPSS) axial pipe-soil interaction behavior. The specific subroutine code was represented in the Finite Element Models (FEMs) by a series of User Elements (UELs) attached to the pipe elements. The NLBPSS case is a late and exclusive contribution from the present work to the family of available pipeline walking solutions for different forms of axial pipe-soil interaction model. The parametric case-study results are benchmarked against theoretical calculations of pipeline walking showing that the case study results deliver a reasonable accuracy level and are reliable. The results are then distilled into a simplified method in which the WR for NLBPSS soil can be estimated by adjusting a solution derived for RP and EPP soil. The key outcome is a genuine method to correct the WR resultant from a RP soil approach to allow for peak and softening behaviour. It provides a design tool that extends beyond the previously-available solutions and allows more rapid and efficient predictions of pipeline walking to be made. This contribution clarifies, for the downslope walking case, what is the most appropriate basis to incorporate or idealize the soil characteristics within the axial Pipe-Soil Interaction (PSI) response when performing PW assessments.
