Abstract Despite the longstanding federal mandate to place students with disabilities in general education classrooms to the maximum extent appropriate, most students with intellectual disability continue to spend most of their time in separate classrooms and schools. In this study, we describe longitudinal educational placement patterns in six states that represent the wide span of educational placement (i.e., Vermont, Kentucky, Kansas, Massachusetts, Illinois, and Montana). Surprisingly, some states are trending toward more restrictive placements, and the gap between the most and least inclusive states is continuing to widen over time. We offer constructive suggestions for appropriately applying the principle of least restrictive environment so that placement decisions are driven by student needs and not where students live.

Анотація:
Fixation with cannulated screw was widely accepted for management of femoral neck fracture. However, the angle of placement cannulated screw for management of femoral neck fracture still controversial. The present study aims to investigate the mechanical behavior of the cannulated screws with two different angles of placements which are 135o and 150o in inverted triangular configuration for management of femoral neck fracture via finite element method. Therefore, the 3D model of a proximal femur consist of femoral neck fracture was constructed from CT data images using medical image processing software. The von Mises stress distributions on the cannulated screws were compared between each screw angle placement. The result showed that the cannulated screws in inverted triangle with 135o of placement angle have better stress distributions than 150o placement angle.

UK higher education institutions are now expected to be able to demonstrate that they are adhering to the Code of Practice for the Assurance of Academic Quality and Standards in Higher Education in Placement Learning. The responsibility for ensuring that a placement provides an adequate opportunity for its intended learning outcomes rests with the educational institution. This paper draws on the author's experience of the management and evaluation of placements in the construction sector. In recognition of the increasingly global nature of the business, a placement programme has been developed to meet the particular challenges of students operating in multidisciplinary and multicultural environments. Participation in the European Commission's Leonardo da Vinci Vocational Training Programmes and pilot projects has enabled the identification of further criteria for evaluating and disseminating experience gained in work-based learning across the frontiers of language and culture. However, the paper also identifies problems peculiar to the UK market for construction professions and higher education programmes in construction-related disciplines. A study by Northumbria University highlighted challenges for both industry and higher education arising from economic pressures on students and the positioning of construction-related courses in the higher education market. Given the global nature of the construction business, it is clear that there are significant benefits to be gained from taking a global view of relevant issues.

This paper is concerned with mitigating multimode buffeting of cable-stayed bridges by optimizing the placements of active tuned mass dampers (ATMDs) and sensors and developing a control model and schemes. The Third Nanjing Bridge over the Yangtze River was used to formulate a mathematical control model with distributed ATMDs under wind action. Hankel norms were combined with structural mode analysis to build placement indices of the ATMDs and sensors under a defined objective while considering the influence of exterior excitation. A selection index of modes was proposed. ATMD/sensor placement on the Third Nanjing Bridge and mode selection were simulated to determine the wind response control. A control design model with accurate mode selection was developed using modal superposition and it was used to investigate control schemes of distributed ATMDs for buffeting response control of the cable-stayed bridge. The results showed that the dynamic characteristics of the developed control design model agreed well with those of the original system model. Control scheme selection depends on the tradeoff between the control objective and actuator performance. Considering realistic engineering constraints, the distributed ATMDs are shown to perform well.

The Texas Department of Transportation plans to implement smoothness specifications based on profilograph testing for all asphalt concrete paving projects as part of its construction quality control/quality assurance program. Smoothness specifications have been developed for newly constructed asphalt and portland cement concrete pavements. In a move to develop a similar specification for asphalt concrete overlays, the Texas Transportation Institute was asked to evaluate the applicability of the existing flexible pavement smoothness specifications for the quality control and quality assurance of pavement rideability on overlay construction projects. This study was intended to provide the state with the information necessary to evaluate the improvement in ride quality that may be expected from placement of asphalt overlays, particularly for thin overlays [38 to 51 mm (1.5 to 2 in.)], which are generally constructed in Texas. To collect data to determine whether the existing specification can be implemented for overlay construction work, TTI monitored a number of overlay projects during the 1994 calendar year. Profilograph measurements were made during these projects before any surface preparation, after surface preparation, and after placement of the asphalt concrete overlay. All of the projects monitored involved thin overlays. The data collected indicate that the existing smoothness specifications can be implemented on overlay projects, provided that appropriate surface preparations (e.g., milling, level-ups) are conducted to correct existing surface distresses before placement of the overlay.

Nearshore nourishments are constructed for shoreline protection from waves, to provide sediment nourishment to the beach profile, and to beneficially use dredged sediment from navigation channel maintenance. However, it is poorly understood how placement morphology and depth influence nearshore processes operated on wave-dominated coasts. This study investigates the wave fields, sediment transport, and morphological response to three common nearshore nourishment shapes, nearshore berm (elongated bar), undulated nearshore berm, and small discrete mounds, with numerical experiments utilizing the Coastal Modeling System. The nourishments are placed in depths between 3 m and 7 m with a volume of approximately 100,000 m3 and between 400 m and 1000 m in alongshore length. Numerical experiments are carried out in three distinct coastal settings with representative wave climates and geomorphology. Simulation results indicate that shallower, more continuous berms attenuate the most wave energy, while deeper, more diffuse placements retain more sediment. Results from this study improve the understanding of nearshore nourishment shapes and can support decision makers identifying the most appropriate construction technique for future nearshore nourishment projects.

Abstract Titanium alloys have a wide range of applications, and the internal placement of hydrogen into them can modulate the microstructure of the alloys and thus have great potential for further development. However, few studies have been reported on the application of this technique to Nb-Ti-Co ternary alloys, which needs to be urgently investigated. In this paper, four types of alloys (Nb10Ti61Co29, Nb15Ti55Co30, Nb20Ti50Co30, and Nb25Ti50Co25) are selected near the eutectic point of the phase diagram to study their placement of hydrogen by both static and dynamic processes of hydrogen’s placements, focusing on the effects of the temperature, time, and hydrogen-flow rate of such processes on the amount of hydrogen placements. The relationship between the hydrogen replacement parameters and the mechanical properties of the alloys is constructed. The results show that the placed-hydrogen amount of Nb-Ti-Co as-cast alloy grows with the increase of hydrogen-flow rate and soaking (or holding) time, with an upper limit of the placed-hydrogen amount, and the pattern of the directionally- solidified alloys is similar to that of the as-cast alloys; however, at a certain soaking time and hydrogen- flow rate, although the placed hydrogen amount of both alloys rises with the increase of temperature, the placed-hydrogen amount of Nb-Ti-Co directionally-solidified alloys is always larger than that of the as-cast alloys. However, the amount of hydrogen placement in the Nb-Ti-Co directionally-solidified alloys is always larger than that in the as-cast alloys, and the amount of hydrogen placement decreases significantly as the growth rate of the alloys increases. In addition, the microhardness decreases with increasing growth rate in the directionally-solidified specimens, and the amount of hydrogen placement and microhardness increase with growing Nb content.

An optimal sensor placement with multiple types of sensors could provide informative data of a structure to facilitate its structural damage detection. A response covariance-based multi-objective multi-type sensor optimal placement method has been thus developed. To validate this method, an experimental investigation was designed and performed in terms of a nine-bay three-dimensional frame structure, and the experimental details and results are presented in this article. The frame structure was first built, and a finite element model of the frame structure was constructed and updated. The proposed method was then applied to the finite element model to find the optimal sensor placement configuration. The multi-type sensors were then installed on the frame structure according to the determined optimal sensor numbers and positions. Different damage scenarios were then generated on the frame structure. These damage scenarios covered single and multiple damage cases occurring at different locations with different damage severities. A series of experiments, including the optimal and non-optimal sensor placements, were finally carried out, and the measurement data were used together with the finite element model to identify damage quantitatively. The identification results show that the optimal multi-type sensor placement determined by the proposed method could provide accurate damage localization and satisfactory damage quantitation and that the optimal sensor placement yielded better damage identification than the non-optimal sensor placement.

Placement is an important constrained optimization problem in the design of very large scale (VLSI) integrated circuits [1–4]. Simulated annealing [5] and min-cut placement [6] are two of the most successful approaches to the placement problem. Min-cut methods yield less congested and more routable placements at the expense of more wire-length, while simulated annealing methods tend to optimize more the total wire-length with little emphasis on the minimization of congestion. It is also well known that min-cut algorithms are substantially faster than simulated-annealing-based methods. In this paper, a fast min-cut algorithm (ROW-PLACE) for row-based placement is presented and is empirically shown to achieve simulated-annealing-quality wire-length on a number of benchmark circuits. In comparison with Timberwolf 6 [7], ROW-PLACE is at least 12 times faster in its normal mode and is at least 25 times faster in its faster mode. The good results of ROW-PLACE are achieved using a very effective clustering-based partitioning algorithm in combination with constructive methods that reduce the wire-length of nets involved in terminal propagation.

Walls of corridors and chambers in the Neolithic dolmens of Portugal and Spain were constructed using megalithic slabs or masonry. When constructed with slabs, the slabs were arranged using two very different construction systems, based either on placement of an orthostat or on imbrication of the slabs. Although generally dolmens are described with orthostats, on the Iberian Peninsula are most often constructed using imbricated slabs. The walls of orthostatic and masonry dolmens are lintelled structures. The walls of imbricated slab dolmens, however, are unique structures without later representation. Temporally, the orthostatic dolmens represent the earliest construction system, followed by those of imbricated slabs and finally those of masonry. This evolution can be explained in terms of the capacities of the selfsupporting walls and simplification of the construction processes.

Dans tous les problèmes d’agencement, les contraintes de non-chevauchement entre composants et les contraintes d’appartenanceau conteneur sont présentes. Un modèle d’agencement multiobjectif avec contraintes fonctionnelles est développé. Intégrer l’accessibilité des composants comme contraintes fonctionnelles assure la maintenance ou le fonctionnement des composants. Cependant, les contraintes fonctionnelles augmentent la complexité d’optimisation d’agencement, notée indice de capacité. Par conséquent, un nouvel algorithme d’optimisation multiobjectif est proposé en utilisant le placement constructif et le recuit simulé pour rechercher des solutions de compromis entre les objectifs multiples. Ensuite, un indicateur de similarité est défini pour évaluer les similaires entre les solutions proposées par l’algorithme. Les expériences indiquent que l’approche d’optimistion proposée fonctionne bien pour garantir l’accessibilité et trouver efficacement des solutions optimales dans les problèmes industriels d’agencement d’espace à un ou plusieurs conteneurs, où l’analyse de similarité démontre une bonne diversité solutions proposées par l’algorithme, qui peut être appliqué en tant qu’outil interactif outil pour leconcepteur
The conventional layout problem is concerned with finding the arrangements of components inside the container to optimize objectives under geometrical constraints, i.e., no component overlap and no container protrusion. A multi-objective layout model with functional constraints is developed. Integrating the accessibility of components as functional constraints ensures components maintenance or proper operation. However, thefunctional constraints increase the layout optimization complexity, denoted as capacity index. Therefore, a novel multi-objective optimizationalgorithm is proposed using the constructive placement and the simulated annealing to search for compromised solutions between the multiple objectives. Thereafter, a similarity indicator is defined to evaluate how similar optimized layout designs are. The experiments indicate that the proposed optimization approach performs well in ensuring accessibility and efficiently finding high-qualified solutions in single- and multi- container layoutapplications, where the similarity analysis demonstrates good diversity of the obtained layout set, which can be applied as an interactive tool

Cette recherche questionne le rapport que l'enfant placé entretient avec l'événement- séparation qui est à l’ origine de son placement et qu'il vit comme une sanction dont il est le seul responsable. Les enfants placés, qui sont dé-placés pour être replacés, le plus souvent, ne comprennent rien au déroulement de leur vie ; ils sont en perte de repères affectifs et temporels, et n'expriment pas une demande de soin (thérapeutique) mais une demande de compréhension (dans le sens socratique de prendre soin de soi) de leurs préoccupations existentielles. L’histoire de vie étant une recherche et une construction de sens à partir de faits et d'événements temporels personnels et familiaux, mais peu utilisée avec des enfants, nous l'avons tentée avec des enfants placés. Cette démarche a favorisé le mouvement de reconstruction et de travail sur ce que leur contexte de vie a fait d'eux, par le processus de construction-déconstruction-reconstruction, et la situation de co-investissement qui permet de relier le locuteur et l'interlocuteur. Nous avons procédé à une étude compréhensive à partir de trois récits d'enfants placés, de la structure des récits et de l'évolution de ces enfants tout au long de leur récit et de leur travail sur l'énoncé. Cette recherche s'inscrit dans le champ de l'histoire de vie et dans le champ de la sociologie clinique qui renvoie à l'articulation du social et du psychique. L’histoire de vie est interprétée comme outil d'historicité, de travail sur son histoire pour en construire le sens et le cours. Ces trois enfants, par le récit qu'ils ont produit, ont pu affronter les contradictions qui ont traversé leur vie, et tenter de leur donner du sens par les articulations qu'ils sont arrivés à faire entre les évènements et les personnes qui faisaient partie de leur vie ; ils ont pu "réaliser" qu'ils ne sont pas responsables de la séparation qui fut déterminée par les difficultés personnelles, familiales ou sociales de leurs parents. Nous avons considéré la pratique du récit de vie comme l'axe central de la construction identitaire ; l'identité se construit par le rapport que les enfants entretiennent avec la dimension psychique et la dimension sociale de leur vie ; par le récit de leur vie et le questionnement de cette vie, les trois enfants sont parvenus à "sortir d'eux-mêmes" pour interroger leur environnement familial et social…
The subject of this research is the relation of the placed-child to the separating-event which is the reason why he has been placed and is considered for the child as a sanction for which he has be blamed. Children who have been placed, who are out-placed to be placed again do not most of the time understand nothing to the way their existence is evolving; they have been losing their affective and temporal marks, and do not ask for (therapeutic) care but for understand (in the socratic meaning: take care of oneself) of their worries related to the fact they exist. The life story is a search and a building up of meaning which is possible thanks to the analysis of facts and personal as well as family temporal events, but so far this has been seldom used with children; we have tried implement this method with placed children. This method has enhanced the process of re-building and has encouraged them to start working on the consequences on themselves of what they have been undergoing in their lives. This throught a building-break- rebuilding process and the situation of co-investment which creates a link between the speaker and the interlocutor. We have carried out a comprehensive survey based on three stories of placed children, on the stories’ structure and on these children's evolution all along their relating their stories and their analysing their statements. This survey fits in with the life history and the clinic sociology field which refers to the linking of the social and the psychic. This history of life is interpreted as a tool of historicity, of work on one's history, to build up its meaning and direction. Through the relating of their story these three children have been able to cope with the contradictions they have been faced with in their lives. They have intended to give a meaning to these contradictions thanks to the linking they have been able to make between the events and the people in their lives. They have become aware that they were not responsible for the separation which was due to their parent's personal, family or social difficulties. We have been considering the experience of the story telling as the main line in the building of identity; the building of identity is possible thanks to the link the child sets up between the psychic and the social dimensions of his life. Previous research has indicated the unique contribution that the interaction between looked after children and their foster carers might have on young people’s behaviour, emotional well-being and subsequent placement stability. Furthermore, there may be differences in the way in which young people and their foster carers view a typical family. Despite this, there is a noticeable absence of studies which have specifically explored the foster carer-child relationship, particularly in terms of how their individual perspectives might be negotiated within their interpersonal relationship. The current study therefore aimed to address this gap. Three foster carer-child dyads were recruited from a local Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service, with young people aged between 8 and 16 years. A Personal Construct Psychology (PCP) approach was adopted. Participants each completed an individual interview, facilitated by Perceiver Element Grids (PEGs; Procter, 2002) in which interpersonal construing was explored. Looked after children and their foster carers were then interviewed together to share and discuss their completed PEGs. Interview transcripts were analysed using Thematic Analysis and PCP concepts were used to analyse the interactional processes between young people and their carers. The study highlighted a shared sense of fragmentation across participants’ accounts, with both looked after children and their carers reporting a sense of inauthenticity in the way they negotiated their interpersonal relationships. Differences in the way in which ‘family’ was perceived was also highlighted, with young people expressing a sense of ambivalence regarding their desire to be integrated into their foster family, whilst also retaining a connection to their birth family. These themes were supported in their interactions and co-constructional processes. The findings are discussed in relation to the relevant literature and clinical implications. Methodological limitations and directions for future research are also presented.

A new heuristic method to improve the I/O pad assignment for the sea-of-gates placement algorithm "PROUD" is proposed. In PROUD, the preplaced I/O pads are used as the boundary conditions in solving sparse linear equations to obtain the optimal module placement. Due to the total wire length determined by the module positions is the strong function of the preplaced I/O pad positions, the optimization of the I/O pad circular order and their assignment to the physical locations on the chip are attempted in the thesis. The proposed I/O pad assignment program is used as a predecessor of PROUD. The results have revealed excellent improvement.

Supplemental passive dampers are generally considered as an effective tool to control the seismic response of multi-storey buildings. Since the optimum placement of passive dampers in buildings can potentially improve the structural performance or reduce construction cost, there is an increasing number of researchers engaged to optimize the damper placement in buildings. Given that a large number of studies have been conducted to investigate damper placement methods, a systematic method or a clear conclusion for strategically distributing dampers in buildings is not presented in any building guidelines. The main limitations of current damper placement studies may include the lack of focus on collapse resistance of retrofitted buildings, on beam and column nonlinear behaviors, and the lack of considering the variations of earthquake characteristics and intensity levels. The fundamental damper placement issue can be separated as the distribution of dampers throughout the height of the buildings and the distribution of dampers in different bays in building frames. In this research, both distributions are explored and their effect on the collapse performances of buildings under strong earthquakes is thoroughly studied. The effectiveness of advanced damper placement approaches is evaluated by comparisons with classical damper placement methods. Considering the uncertainty in earthquake ground motion characteristics, multiple ground motions scaled to various intensity levels are involved to evaluate the seismic performance of buildings. Finally, major conclusions towards the philosophy of the strategic damper placement in practical building constructions are presented in terms of the overall structural performance under strong ground motions.

An ergonomically designed work environment may decrease work related musculoskeletal disorders, lead to less sick leaves and increase production time for operators and companies all around the world. Volvo Construction Equipment wants to deepen the knowledge and investigate more carefully how operators are actually sitting whilst operating the machines, how this affects placement of controls and furthermore optimize controls placements accordingly. The purpose is to enhance their product development process by suggesting guidelines for control placement with improved ergonomics based on operators’ sitting postures. The goal is to deliver a process which identifies and transfers sitting postures to RAMSIS and uses them for control placement recommendations in the cab and operator environments. Delimitations concerns: physical ergonomics, 80% usability of the resulted process on the machine types, and the level of detail for controls and their placements. Research, analysis, interviews, test driving of machines, video recordings of operators and the ergonomic software RAMSIS has served as base for analysis. The analysis led to (i) the conclusion that sitting postures affect optimal ergonomic placement of controls, though not ISO-standards, (ii) the conclusion that RAMSIS heavy truck postures does not seem to correspond to Volvo CE’s operators’ sitting postures and (iii) and to an advanced engineering project process suitable for all machine types and applicable in the product development process. The result can also be used for other machines than construction equipment. The resulted process consists of three independent sub-processes with step by step explanations and recommendations of; (i) what information that needs to be gathered, (ii) how to identify and transfer sitting postures into RAMSIS, (iii) how to use RAMSIS to create e design aid for recommended control placement. The thesis also contains additional enhancements to Volvo CE’s product development process with focus on ergonomics. A conclusion is that the use of motion capture could not be verified to work for Volvo Construction Equipment, though it was verified that if motion capture works, the process works. Another conclusion is that the suggested body landmarks not could be verified that they are all needed for this purpose except for those needed for control placement. Though they are based on previous sitting posture identification in vehicles and only those that also occur in RAMSIS are recommended, and therefore they can be used. This thesis also questions the most important parameters for interior vehicle design (hip- and eye locations) and suggests that shoulder locations are just as important. The thesis concluded five parameters for control categorization, and added seven categories in addition to those mentioned in the ISO-standards. Other contradictions and loopholes in the ISO-standards were identified, highlighted and discussed. Suggestions for improving the ergonomic analyses in RAMSIS can also be found in this report. More future research mentioned is more details on control placement as well as research regarding sitting postures are suggested. If the resulted process is delimited to concern upper body postures, other methods for posture identification may be used.

This book traces the emergence of the South Indian city of Kanchi as a major royal capital and multireligious pilgrimage destination during the era of the Pallava and Chola dynasties (circa seventh through thirteenth centuries). It presents the first-ever comprehensive picture of historical Kanchi, locating the city and its more than 100 spectacular Hindu temples at the heart of commercial and artistic exchange that spanned India, Southeast Asia, and China. The author demonstrates that Kanchi was structured with a hidden urban plan, which determined the placement and orientation of temples around a central thoroughfare that was also a burgeoning pilgrimage route. Moving outwards from the city, she shows how the transportation networks, river systems, residential enclaves, and agrarian estates all contributed to the vibrancy of Kanchi’s temple life. The construction and ongoing renovation of temples in and around the city, she concludes, has enabled Kanchi to thrive continuously from at least the eighth century, through the colonial period, and up until the present.

Abstract Slickwater fracturing technology is one of the significant stimulation measures for the development of unconventional reservoirs. An effective proppant placement in hydraulic fractures is the key to increase the oil production of unconventional reservoirs. However, previous studies on optimizing proppant placement are mainly focused on CFD numerical simulation and related laboratory experiments, and an optimization design method that comprehensively consider multiple influencing factors has not been established. The objective of this study is to establish an optimal design algorithm for proppant placement based on the construction characteristics of slickwater fracturing combined with Back Propagation (BP) neural network. In this paper, a proppant placement simulation experimental device was built to analyze proppant placement form data. We established a BP neural network model that considers multiple influencing factors and used the proppant placement form data to train and calibrate the model, which the proppant placement form prediction model is finally obtained. Using the proppant placement form prediction model, we designed an algorithm that can quickly select the three groups of construction schemes with the best proppant-filling ratio based on the massive construction schemes. The results indicate that the prediction results of the algorithm for proppant placement form are consistent with the CFD simulation results and experimental results, and the numerical error of the balanced height and the distance between the front edge of the proppant sandbank and the fracture entrance is within 5%. After using this algorithm to optimize the design of the fracturing construction scheme for the C8 oil well in Changqing Oilfield, the stimulation performance of the C8 oil well after fracturing is 2.7 times that of the adjacent well. The optimal design algorithm for proppant placement established in this paper is an effective, accurate, and intelligent optimization algorithm. This algorithm will provide a novel method for hydraulic fracturing construction design in oilfields.

Abstract An undisclosed tight-gas field produces gas from a large heterogenous fluvial reservoir with limited well control in margins and appraisal areas, as well as sparse advanced logs (formation micro-imaging, magnetic resonance, or sonic tools, etc). The principal goal of this study is to provide a novel solution using machine-learning (ML) techniques to predict sandstone distribution and to some extent automate the process of optimizing well placement. This workflow overcomes low data quality, scaling, and inconsistency, and builds the bridge between geoscience and artificial intelligence (AI) software platforms. This newly proposed solution provides a combination of ML and geological studies to optimize well placement. The key steps of this technology are: Use unsupervised seismic waveform classification together with well logs to define sand body distribution and generate a reservoir risk map to support well planning. Construct a 3D grid with multiple variables to extract and integrate well logs and seismic attributes from existing 2D seismic lines for data organization and analysis. Set up the data transform mechanism to unlock restrictions of data analysis between subsurface domain and AI software platforms. Test multiple ML algorithms by carrying out a deep search to find seismic attributes that are the most sensitive to reservoir parameters and form the decision trees for quantitative analysis. Evaluate and select the high-performance results, export them into the subsurface software platform, and make the final property model available for integration and visualization to support well placement. Multiple tests have been completed to date in this gas field, and the results showed that the technique can improve well placement, add potential reserve and also improve the efficiency of the workflow by reducing the execution time by 240 times. The results provide solid support to achieve more reliable and accurate well placement. This new solution generates an improved reservoir risk map with flexibility of using many secondary variables or their combinations. It produces results with higher resolution and focuses on improving efficiency. It also reduces turnaround time and increases collaboration over conventional approaches by improving the accuracy of fast predictions as the data flow enriches the database rapidly, which unleashes big data potential. This innovative solution can be applied to other projects especially ML empowered well placements in complex geological settings.

Wetland construction in tidally influenced embayments is a strategy for beneficial use of sediment dredged from nearby navigation channels. These projects have the potential to alter basin morphology, tidal hydrodynamics, and shoaling trends. This special report provides a broad review of the literature related to engineering-induced changes in tidal range, salinity, tidal prism, tidal asymmetry, and other known causes of shoaling. Each potential shoaling mechanism is then evaluated in the context of wetland placement to provide a foundation for future beneficial use research. Based on a compilation of worldwide examples, wetland placement may reduce tidal amplitude and enhance ebb current dominance, thus reducing shoaling rates in the channels. However, constructed wetlands could also reduce the embayment’s tidal prism and cause accelerated shoaling relative to the pre-engineered rate. Because constructed wetlands are often created in conjunction with navigation channel dredging, the system’s morphologic response to wetland construction is likely to be superimposed upon its response to channel deepening, and the net effect may vary depending on a variety of system-specific parameters. Planning for future wetland placements should include an evaluation of local hydrodynamic behavior considering these factors to predict site-specific response.

In 2018, jetties and a sill were constructed by the US Army Corps of Engineers adjacent to the Sheep Pen Gut Federal Channel at Rhodes Point, Smith Island, Maryland. These navigation improvements were constructed under Section 107 of the Continuing Authorities Program. Material dredged for construction of the structures and realignment of the channel were used to restore degraded marsh. Following construction and dredging, 2 years of monitoring were performed to evaluate the performance of navigation improvements with respect to the prevention of shoaling within the channel, shoreline changes, and impacts to submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV). Technical Report ERDC/CHL TR-20-14 describes the first year of post-project monitoring and the methodologies employed. This report describes conclusions derived from 2 years of monitoring. While the navigation improvements are largely preventing the channel from infilling, shoaling within is occurring at rates higher than expected. The placement site appears stable and accreting landward; however, there continues to be erosion along the shoreline and through the gaps in the breakwaters. SAV monitoring indicates that SAV is not present in the project footprint, even though turbidity is comparable to the reference area. Physical disturbance of the bottom sediment during construction may explain SAV absence.

Physical property testing found that 14 of the borings were non-cohesive sandy materials that may be suitable for potential beach renourishment or berm construction. The remaining 20 borings had mud contents sufficient enough to result in cohesive behavior. A subset of six of these materials from across the geographic region were further evaluated to characterize their erosion behavior. Following a self-weight consolidation period of 30 days, erosion testing showed that the tested cohesive sediments had critical shear stress values that ranged from 1.7 Pa to 2.9 Pa, suggesting that these sediments would likely be resistant to erosion in most wetland environments after placement. Additionally, the cohesive sediments were found to produce gravel-sized mud clasts. These clasts could account for 20% or more of the eroded mass and significantly reduce the amount of silts and clays incorporated in suspended plumes during and immediately following placement.

The existing normative documents do not set out separate requirements for the development of projects for the execution of works in compressed construction conditions, these norms do not provide for the definition of rational erection schemes for the selected set of mechanization in the dimensions of a specific construction site, which is characterized by various restrictions and obstacles. The proposed requirements for the use of mechanization methods in the conditions of compacted buildings during the installation of pile foundations based on a preliminary analysis of the parameters of the construction site: engineering and geological condition of the site; internal brevity of the designed structure; external brevity of the construction site; dimensions of the driving car; sites for the location of additional equipment, warehouses, unloading areas. Taking into account practical experience in the development of work projects and the analysis of current regulatory documents, made it possible to establish the main requirements for the use of small-sized drilling rigs in densely built-up conditions.

Navigation channels are periodically dredged to maintain safe depths. Dredged sediment was historically placed in upland management areas or in offshore disposal areas. Florida state law prohibits placement of beach fill sediment that contains more than 10% by weight of silt and clay, which is typically a characteristic of dredged material. An alternative is placement in a nearshore berm. Some potential benefits of nearshore berms include wave energy dissipation, reduced cost of dredging and shore protection, and possible onshore movement of the berm material. This study considers sediment distribution, morphological evolution, sediment transport, and shoreline trends along Fort Myers Beach, Florida, related to the nearshore berm constructed in August 2016. Due to timing of the field study, this report also includes information on the influence of a major hurricane that impacted the area. The overall conclusion of this study is that the dredge-sourced sediment in the berm performed as expected. Within 2 years, the berm adjusted to the shoreface environment, maintained a large part of its original volume, and contributed to protection of the beach and shoreline. The impact of Hurricane Irma included a shift in sediment textures and a large but temporary increase in shoreface sediment volumes.

The US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) is conducting the “South Shore of Long Island, New York Regional Sediment Management Investigation” to further understand sediment dynamics and to develop a comprehensive regional sediment management plan for the south shore of Long Island, New York. Regional sediment management is a systems approach using best management practices for more efficient and effective use of sediments in coastal, estuarine, and inland environments. This investigation seeks to characterize sediment movement on the south shore of Long Island as a holistic system across the entire study area. It focuses on the regional system post-Hurricane Sandy (October 2012) as the storm significantly altered the physical landscape with severe shoreline erosion, which resulted in the construction of projects to reduce the risk of future storms and stakeholder priorities with a new emphasis on bay-side sediment dynamics, such as channel shoaling and disappearing wetlands. Despite the fact the storm caused severe erosion, the equilibrium beach profile, depth of closure, and general shoreline orientation seem to be unaffected. Previous studies have characterized sediment movement at specific sections of the south shore, but these data have not been incorporated to create a system-wide perspective. Coordinating sediment management across the six Atlantic Ocean inlets, Great South Bay Channel, Intracoastal Waterway, and coastal storm risk management (CSRM) projects could save the federal government millions of dollars in dredging and sand placement actions. This technical note presents the progress the investigation has made to date and will be followed with a more in-depth technical report titled South Shore of Long Island, New York Regional Sediment Management Investigation: A Post-Hurricane Sandy Shoreline Evaluation, currently in preparation.
