The article discusses the features of the activities of an author and recipient at different stages of the communication process in the perception of a scientific text. Studies of the peculiar influence of the language code on the perception of information in the context of the communicative act of the author of the message and the recipient in the modern information society are among the most relevant nowadays. Creation of a scientific and technical message and its publication are aimed at effective perception of information and achieving a certain linguistic influence of the author of the message on the consciousness of the recipient through the display of the peculiarities of the author's way of thinking. The beginning of scientific communication is the need for certain information of recipients. The response to this need is the proposal of necessary information by the author. The information needs of the recipients form the subject matter and content of scientific and technical communication. The author of the scientific message chooses the most convenient way and channel for the transfer of information to the recipient, and the recipient searches for the necessary information in the most optimal way and channel. The coding of the message usually corresponds to the coding of the informational need of the recipient. The context of the informational message for the author includes the main purpose of creating the message, and for the recipient, the satisfaction of the informational need. For the author, the text is a way of transmitting the message, and for the recipient, it is a source of information. The linguistic activity of the author is focused on the effective satisfaction of consumers’ information needs and on achieving a certain influence on the consciousness of the recipient. The main means of communication is the language of the message of scientific and technical orientation, which expresses its main content, semantic content, logical structure of the information component, which facilitates the process of decoding and assimilation of the message. The structure of a scientific and technical text depends on the genre and target audience. The genre can be viewed as a way of influencing the recipient's consciousness.

The paper's aim is to analyze transchronical interlingual and intercultural poetic communication. Special attention is paid to the recipient, his significance in diachronic translation is investigated. Linguistic and cultural aspects of poetic communication are analyzed: realities, historicisms, archaisms, phraseological units, allusions. The recipient factor is actively studied in pragmalinguistics, which finds common ground with translation studies and the theory of intercultural communication. The research is based on the integrative method: descriptive, contextual, comparative and discursive analysis are used. The paper reveals the synergetic nature of the recipient, unique on age, gender, worldview, political and cultural characteristics; cognitive dissonance of the author and the recipient in monolingual and in interlanguage communication are revealed. The actual basis is the novel in verse Pushkin “Eugene Onegin”, written almost 200 years ago and numerous translations made at different times (1840-2008). The studied empirical material leads to the following conclusions. The translation multiplicity in transchronical transfer of cultural heritage to foreign languages is natural and unavoidable. The search for adequate means of intercultural translation of poetry is transcendental in nature. The syncretic nature of the poetic sign in diachrony strengthens the discrepancy between the recipient's and the author's conceptual and thematic knowledge content. This is particularly evident in terms of the transf chronic communication when the author and recipient are separated by a significant time interval. The source language recipients and the target language recipients have objective sociocultural differences which are more evident in transtemporal interlingual communication. The above-mentioned factors interact in the complex synergistic system that is impossible to cognize and to describe in a reductive linguistic theory of translation. On the basis of insufficiency of the reductionism of the linguistic translation, can be expected the transition to the methodology of holism translation. Holism as a methodological principle and philosophy of knowledge has found effective application in the Humanities. Its use in translation in cross-cultural, cross-language and TRANS chronic communication appear to be objectively necessary. The need for pragmatic adaptation and the borders of its approximate values is to be verified in further studies, combining pragmalinguistics, cognitive linguistics, translation studies, functional stylistics, discourse analysis and linguocognitive translation.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to envisage human characteristics and resources as critical factors in the adoption process. While an individual’s intention to adopt knowledge is considered as the primary motivator in the adoption process, these characteristics, in the appropriate amount, can accelerate the recipients’ knowledge adoption behavior. In this study four personal characteristics, comprising shared language between a knowledge sender and a recipient, the recipient’s prior knowledge, the recipient’s enjoyment in adopting knowledge, and the recipient’s self-confidence have been chosen. Methodology – This research uses four human characteristics, consisting of shared language between knowledge senders and recipients, recipients’ prior knowledge, recipients’ enjoyment in knowledge adoption, and recipients’ self-confidence, to identify their optimal roles in the adoption process. Along with the intention to adopt new knowledge, each of these characteristics was tested in both forms. A survey was conducted with white collar workers. Nine models were designed and regression technique was used for analyzing data and interpreting outcomes of these models. Findings – This study reveals that shared language between a knowledge sender and a recipient as well as a recipient’s self-confidence to adopt new knowledge directly enhances the individual’s likelihood to start learning. Shared language and self-confidence perform better as mutual predictors, while prior knowledge and enjoyment are the moderators. Originality value – The research outcome is beneficial in the designing of organizational business strategies. Shared language between an instructor and a learner increases likelihood to adopt knowledge, thus it is advantageous to arrange prerequisite mandatory courses in order to enhance a learner’s language proficiencies. Organizations can leverage their employees’ prior knowledge if it is perceived to be low. To do so, supervisors should link eagerness in learning and augmenting competencies to career advancement. Advice from, and rapport with a supervisor is essential. Effective strategies can improve the knowledge sharing goals, and in turn achieve business objectives as a whole.

In a multilingual situation where some participants do not speak or understand one of the used languages, the participants need to balance between the language choice and the restrictions it creates for opportunities to participate. In this conversation analytic study, I examine how participants manage differentiated possibilities of participation in asymmetrically multilingual interactions in instances of language brokering and to what extent does brokering draw the recipient into the conversation. The paper concludes, first, that participants’ embodied displays of recipiency toward a main speaker, whose talk they cannot (fully) understand, as well as embodied displays of disengagement from the conversation, can serve to “recruit” linguistic assistance from others. Second, the broker’s orientations to the recipient’s participation status are reflected in the content of the brokering turns. The study thereby demonstrates how participants multimodally negotiate forms of peripheral participation and their accountability. The study argues that, although language brokering is done only occasionally and includes great variation in terms of how prior talk is translated, these practices are not random but result from a systematic interactional organization of action and participation.

This study addresses the question whether the borrowability of linguistic forms, in particular affixes, is constrained by structural properties of the donor and recipient languages involved. According to some claims, structural similarity favors affix borrowing. On some accounts, structural compatibility of a certain kind is even a precondition for affix borrowing. This study tests these claims using data from a set of 78 languages that borrowed between one and 50 affixes, taken from the AfBo database (Seifart, 2013a). The extent of affix borrowing in this set of languages is compared with structural similarity scores for the donor and recipient languages involved, obtained from morphosyntactic features provided in the World Atlas of Language Structures (Dryer and Haspelmath, 2011). Results suggest that structural similarity between a (potential) donor and recipient language plays at best a minor role in determining the extent of affix borrowing. This supports the view that bilingual speakers are not—at least not strongly—constrained by structural factors of the languages they speak when creating mixed varieties of these languages, resulting in contact-induced language change.

The article carries a review of research works on visual stylistic means in advertising. Researchers see them as the means of manipulation that evoke specific associations and assessments in recipients. The main aim of the article is to prove the validity of identification of visual comparison as visual stylistic means. Visual comparisonin political advertising is regarded as an ideological means of influence on a global recipient. Visual comparison is in the nature of correlation or opposition and is effectively used in political advertising compared to other visual stylistic means. The correlation includes two images that are used to draw the attention of the addressee to certain socio-political problems, to form a positive image of the candidate and his program. The mean of opposition is based on a comparison of two antagonistic images, which forces the recipient to make a choice in favor of one of them. The obtained results can be used for further development of the theory of visual textual stylistics and for the creation of texts of politicalInternet advertising.

Abstract The paper makes an attempt to analyse the forms of co-functioning of world languages, taking into account the fact that popular prestigious languages exert influence upon a number of less popular ones, thereby dictating the forms of their further development. Thus, the thesis that media-favoured languages used by politically salient super-powers effectively influence the expressions accepted in a number of “less successful” languages is identified, evidenced and diagnosed. Furthermore, the latter part of the paper stresses the issues concerning the observation that English, recognized as the most prominent donor language, creates many forms of description generally used in many other languages to denote and define similar forms of experiences. Research aimed at discovering the ways in which English influences recipient languages, in this case Polish, was carried out. Our principal assumption was that there exist at least two types of numerous contacts between a donor and recipient language: ones that can be called external (when the donor language mostly influences the recipient one) and ones possibly labelled as internal (when various, normally observed forms of co-operation between the two languages can be traced). As in both cases some semantic bonds can be found, the subsequent research describes said bonds, naming them and uncovering the nature of such co-existence. The results of the research indicate clear forms of semantic co-existence showing that numerous borrowings and loanwords found in the recipient language are widely verbalized and deeply ingrained in the cultural linguistic interdependencies.

The ability of the Tetun community to use two languages or bilingual will give birth to the transfer or transition of languages. In the transition or transfer of language, two very important things will emerge, namely positive and negative transfers. Negative transfers will cause interference and positive transfers will lead to integration. Integration arises from positive transfer because it benefits both languages from the donor language into the recipient language or the absorbing language. The recipient's language is Tetun and the granting language is Indonesian. The purpose of this study is to determine the forms of language integration Indonesian into Tetun in the conversation of traders and buyers in Pasar Baru Betun, Central Malaka Sub-District, Malaka District. The researcher focused on the integration of Indonesian into Tetun. This type of research is qualitative research, the technique used in collecting data is the technique of record, see and interview. The results of this study indicate that the integration of the Indonesian language into Tetun is in the form of basic words, affixation, reduplication, composite and abreviation (shortening of words).

The article elaborates on ways of English loanwords integration into Ukrainian, with comparison to the situation in German and Serbian. The subject matter of research includes processes of adaptation in phonetics and grammar of the above-mentioned languages. The main intralinguistic factor that influences adaptation process is disparity of phonetic and grammar level configuration of languages in contacts. English has an affluent system of vowels that causes necessity of simplification of a phonetic form of English borrowings in other languages. The major factor of phonetic adaptation is an existing tradition of conveying sounds in loanwords in a certain way. However, nowadays transcription also plays a significant role in phonetic adaptation, i.e. integration of loanwords is based on their pronunciation rather than spelling. Uncertainty of patterns for conveying sounds of foreign languages in loanwords leads to variability of phonetic form of English loanwords at the initial stage of their functioning in the recipient language. Grammar adaptation involves adjusting of loanwords to the recipient language. Its course depends on morphological type of language and affinity. The research has revealed main patterns how English loanwords obtain the category of gender, which is absent in English. These patterns are based on both formal and semantic factors. Moreover, the author considers the ways of pluralia tantum nouns integration into the system of the recipient language. The analysis has shown that there is a typological difference between borrowing process on the one hand in Slavic languages and on the other hand in German, i.e. Slavic languages, unlike German, have obligatory derivational stage for verbs and adjective adaptation, which makes process of borrowing more complicated in Slavic languages.

The aim of the present study is to examine the interactional functions of code-switching in plurilingual conversation, with a particular focus on those related to the elaboration of the social identities of the interlocutors, i. e. their identity work. The adopted analytical model was initiated by Auer, and further developed by Gafaranga, who combined it with the Membership Categorization Analysis elaborated by Sacks. The study is based on a corpus consisting of the audio recorded dinner talk of an Italian-Swedish family whose members use Swedish, Italian and a Ligurian dialect, and focuses on the sequential progression of the talk in interaction, thus based on an approach proper of conversation analysis. The participants create and display their different roles (identities), which are related to both group membership and individuality, a subsequent distinction made by Fant. Code-switching is used as a communicative strategy among the speakers and is used to make relevant identities, as well as a tool for the management of the interaction. The analysis is divided in two distinctive parts: one related to the code-switching connected to the organisational management of the conversation, the other connected to the identity work of the interlocutors. The linguistic codes used within the group are either inclusive (Swedish, Italian) or selective (Ligurian) and the analysis indicates a general inclusion rather than exclusion of interlocutors, as the speakers accommodating to the linguistic preferences and competences of the interlocutor. The speakers, when selecting a code, thus make use of recipient design, a concept worked out by Sacks, Schegloff & Jefferson. They choose code in order to include a particular interlocutor, adjusting to the language preferences of the other. There are some instances of asymmetrical plurilingual conversation, in which the interlocutors maintain different codes, but since the code choice appears to be anticipated by the addressee the interaction runs smoothly between them. As for the direction of the code switch, two different tendencies emerge: one in the switches connected to the identity work of the participants in which the direction of the switches seems to be highly significant. The other in the switches connected to the management of the conversation in which the direction proves to be reversible.

This study explores the role of speaker and listener gaze in the production of recipient responses, often called backchannels or, in Japanese, aizuchi. Using elicited narrative audio/video data, speaker gaze and recipient response behaviours were first analyzed quantitatively. The results showed that majority of recipient responses are made while the speaker is gazing at the recipient. Next, a qualitative multimodal analysis was performed on a specific type of recipient response that occurred both during and without speaker gaze. The results showed that recipients make good use of the state of the speakers gaze to regulate the speakers talk and negotiate for a pause, a repair, or a turn at talk. These findings suggest that what are currently known as backchannels are only a small part of a much larger sequential multimodal system that is inseparable from the ongoing talk.

EN : The text of the master's work consists of 84 pages, 75 sources. The object of the research is borrowed vocabulary of the modern Russian language. The subject of research is assimilation of borrowed vocabulary and linguistic elements, phonetic, morphological and lexical-semantic features of changes in Turkisms in modern Russian. The purpose is identification and systematic linguistic analysis of Turkic elements in Russian dictionaries, classification and definition of the largest thematic groups, comparison of the status of Turkisms in Russian and Russianisms in Turkic languages. The study is supposed to solve the following tasks: 1. To give the definition of Turkism and determine its place in the system of borrowed vocabulary of the modern Russian language. 2. Toreveal the ways and reasons for the penetration of Turkisms into Russian and Russianisms into Turkish.3. To characterize the words of Turkic origin in the lexocentric aspect. 4. To investigate the phonetic, morphological and lexical-semantic features of Turkisms. 5. To describe the thematic diversity and part-of-speech specificity. The relevance of the work is based on the lack of a comprehensive study of the process of interpenetration of the vocabulary of the Turkic and Russian languages. The scientific novelty of the study lies in the lexocentric approach – a systematic selection and analysis of not only Turkisms in the dictionaries of the Russian language, but also Russianisms in Turkic, on the example of Turkish, followed by tracking grammatical and semantic changes in thematic groups and determining the quantitative predominance of words, which made it possible to measure the index of the number penetrated words and suggest the intensity of influence on the recipient language in the period of globalization. The methods of research: descriptive, comparative, comparative-historical, statistical and continuous sampling of factual material. The scope materials of the research can be used in the comparative analysis of words in the process of teaching lexicology and lexicography to students of Russian studies or Turkic studies, arouse the interest of ethnographers and historians as representatives of related humanitarian disciplines, to be used as a theoretical basis for further research in the field of linguistics.

Our diploma thesis was concerned with language and propaganda in Mladý svět weekly to 1989. The objective of our work was not only a complex text analysis but also analysis of linguistic devices in terms of propaganda. The task was to analyse linguistic devices of selected text corpuses, specifically always of the introductory spread of the first issue in that particular year from 1959 to 1989. The objective was to find those linguistic devices that were being used in propaganda, sort them according to specific linguistic areas, point out myths that the propaganda created and show how propaganda used language to influence the recipient. Our work consists of a theoretical part and a practical part. The theoretical part deals with the overall historical context of censorship functioning in years 1959-1989. Later on, it gives an overview of the young and children's magazines market. In the next chapter, we give general characteristics of propaganda based on specialized publications. One chapter deals with the way the young perceived propaganda. The last chapter involves the language and propaganda, which also draws from specialized publications. We deal with the language of newspaper reporting and linguistic devices, which the propaganda may have used; methods of influencing the recipient; and using...

1 rozprawy. Wydobyciu składników semantycznych (rozdz. 2) misji, wizji, strategii posłużyły: przegląd rozumienia tych terminów w pracach z zakresu zarządzania i marketingu, analiza definicji leksemów MISJA, WIZJA, STRATEGIA w 9 słownikach polszczyzny ogólnej i analiza poświadczeń cytowanych w korpusach. Rozdział 4 rozprawy poświęcono zrekonstruowaniu figur nadawcy i zakładanego odbiorcy. W analizowanych tekstach wyróżniono kilka strategii nadawczych i odbiorczych. W rozdz.
The main aim of this doctoral thesis is the analysis of the mission statements presented on the websites of the biggest Polish companies and the best higher education facilities. The analysis was conducted having regard to the roles of these self-presentation texts in public relations. A great attention was also paid to the linguistic devices used in the mission statements. The data collected facilitated the analysis of the pragmalinguistic features of the mission statements as well as it allowed to picture the similarities and the differences among the texts. Furthermore, the author was able to determine: how companies and higher education facilities define their missions, what image companies and higher education facilities want to present and thanks to what linguistic means and figures of speech they want reach out to their clients, what values companies and higher education facilities find crucial. The data collected comes from the websites of Polish companies and higher education facilities that have been placed in “500 Biggest Polish companies of 2012” run by Polityka – in this dissertation, first 100 companies were taken into account – and “The Best Higher Education Facilities of 2012” run by Perspektywy and Rzeczpospolita – here, all 88 schools of the list were taken into account. A detailed analysis allowed to classify all of the texts as one type of statement – the mission statement. Complimentary research methods allowed for a detailed description of all the texts. Semantic analysis, including structural semantics, was the best tool for critical analysis of dictionary entries and corpus data (HASK: pelcra.pl/jask_pl) which referred to phrases such as: mission, vision, strategy, and lexemes that play crucial semantic and pragmatic roles in the texts (the usage of testing sentences to determine the type of roles makes this part of the dissertation take on a cognitive approach). Conversely, the research methodology in text linguistics allowed for showing the pragmalinguistic meanings conveyed in the texts. The obtained data, thanks to the analysis presented in chapter 1, allowed the author to sort out the terminology with special reference to the terms: mission, vision, and strategy. The author had to review the meaning of these terms in texts concerning management and marketing, analyze the definitions presented in nine dictionaries of the Polish language, and check the quotations available in the lexical corpus. As a result of this research, there was established a definition of mission statement. In the 3 chapter of the doctoral dissertation there were distinguished the main functions of the mission statement. All of these functions play a role in creating the message and define whether it is going to be effective. Chapter 4 of this dissertation focuses on the presentation of the sender and the recipient of a message. An in-depth analysis of the texts discovered several linguistic strategies. Chapter 5 focuses on the language of value used in the mission statements. The author decided to incorporate the typology presented by Jadwiga Puzynina (1992), which was later developed. Additional metalanguage formulae allowed to identifying lexeme as belonging to a given value category. Sorting out lexemes referring to values in mission statements, as well as applying formulae revealed a strong position of instrumental values. While conducting the analysis of the mission statements, there were also taken into consideration other genres and types of text. They are introduced in chapter 6. The most prominent are the elements of ritual language. They are specific for business language and resemble newspeak. Another crucial element that is included are slogans. The concluding chapter of this doctoral dissertation stresses the importance of using adequate linguistic devices in order to successfully present the institutions mission and to assign the mission statements a new meaning.

This chapter reviews a series of replications of the studies reported in previous chapters on eight typologically distinct language pairs, making use of a wide array of phonological, morphological, and syntactic diagnostics (e.g., vowel harmony, word order, case-marking, adjectival expression, nominal determination patterns, verb incorporation strategies). Wherever a conflict site between donor and recipient languages could be determined, lone items were systematically shown to behave like the latter, often to the point of assuming the fine details of its variable quantitative conditioning. Results confirm that the integration process and its outcome—grammatical identity of donor-language items with recipient-language counterparts—are universal.

This chapter addresses the problem of classifying formally ambiguous bare forms. It illustrates with analysis of three typologically distinct language pairs involving isolating recipients (Wolof, Fongbe, and Igbo) that feature virtually no overt morphology on the noun, obviating the morphological criterion for loanword integration. Here the appeal is to the syntax of nouns and noun phrases, focusing on their variable distribution across different types of modification structure. This expands and systematizes the comparisons of chapters 4 and 5 by considering in greater detail not just the rates of occurrence of a diagnostic but also its variable structure. Regardless of language pair, the overwhelming majority of lone donor-language nouns display quantitative parallels to their relevant recipient-language counterparts in ways far too specific to be random. At the same time, they pattern differently from nouns in unmixed donor-language contexts. This reveals that the donor-language nouns have been borrowed and integrated into different recipients.

This chapter tests a strong loanword integration hypothesis: that donor-language material that has been borrowed will display variability in morphosyntactic integration paralleling that of the recipient language. This requires explicitly marshalling the recipient language as the benchmark for comparison, an innovation implemented here for the first time. Illustrating with the typologically different Tamil-English language pair, word order and case-marking of English-origin objects of Tamil verbs are analyzed. English indirect objects are overwhelmingly inflected with Tamil dative markers, but direct objects tend not to be marked for the accusative. Comparison reveals that this patterning reflects the case-marking variability inherent in the recipient-language benchmark, compelling us to recognize even these apparently bare forms as borrowed, and supporting the Nonce Borrowing Hypothesis. This demonstrates that the facts of variability must be taken into account to identify which forms have been borrowed and which have been code-switched.

This chapter confronts the structure of borrowed items explicitly with that of multiword code-switches produced by the same French-English bilinguals. Speakers are shown to imbue switches with the morphosyntactic structure of the donor language while integrating borrowings into that of the recipient language, to the extent of mirroring its variable patterning. Also measured is speakers’ relative propensity to engage in these mixing types, to determine whether those who make copious use of one are equally likely to use the other. No such correlation could be established, further attesting to the distinction among these strategies. Corroborating evidence comes from three additional language pairs and one triplet, in which, regardless of diagnostic or language, lone donor-language items, nonce and more frequent, are seen to behave in parallel in their adoption of recipient-language structure, and differently from multiword code-switches, which retain donor-language structure.

This chapter identifies the rationale behind this volume: the enduring controversy over how to theorize language-mixing strategies. Relating this controversy to discrepancies in the conceptualization and treatment of the data of language mixing, it outlines a method to distinguish among other-language phenomena based on spontaneous bilingual performance, quantitative analysis, and rigorous standards of proof. It justifies the focus on the three quantitatively predominant manifestations of language mixing: nonce borrowing, lexical retrieval of previously borrowed words and code-switching. It introduces and defines integration, the major tool in characterizing language-mixing types. Ensuing chapters identify and illustrate an array of integration strategies, whereby the vast majority of lone other-language items are adapted to the morphological and syntactic patterns of a recipient language, in a variety of language pairs.

This chapter revisits the question of whether speakers marshal phonetic integration as a strategy to distinguish code-switching, nonce borrowing, and established loanwords. Systematic comparison of the behavior of individuals, diagnostics, and language-mixing types reveals variability at every level of the phonetic adaptation process, providing strong confirmation that individuals do not phonetically integrate other-language words, whether nonce or dictionary-attested, into the recipient language in a systematic way. Nor do they share a phonetic strategy for handling any of their language-mixing types. This is in striking contrast to the morphosyntactic treatment they afford this same material when borrowing it: immediate, quasi-categorical, and consistent adaptation community-wide. This confirms that phonetic and morphosyntactic integration are independent. Only the latter is a reliable metric for distinguishing language-mixing types.

AbstractThis article gives a comprehensive theoretical account of deception in multimodal film narrative in the light of the pragmatics of film discourse, the cognitive philosophy of film, multimodal analysis, studies of fictional narrative and – last but not least – the philosophy of lying and deception. Critically addressing the extant literature, a range or pertinent notions and issues are examined: multimodality, film narration and the status of the cinematic narrator, the pragmatics of film construction (notably, the characters’ communicative level and the one of the collective sender and the recipient), the fictional world and its truth, the recipient’s film engagement and make believing, as well as narrative unreliability. Previous accounts of deceptive films are revisited and three main types of film deception are proposed with regard to the two levels of communication on which it materialises, the characters’ level and the recipient’s level, as well as the intradiegetic and/or the extradiegetic narrator involved. This discussion is illustrated with multimodally transcribed examples of deception extracted from the American television seriesHouse. In the course of the analysis, attention is paid to how specific types of deception detailed in the philosophy of language (notably, lies, deceptive implicature, withholding information, covert ambiguity, and covert irrelevance) are deployed through multimodal means in the three types of film deception (extradiegetic deception, intradiegetic deception, and a combination of both when performed by both cinematic and intradiegetic narrators). Finally, inspired by the discussion of Hitchcock’s controversial lying flashback scene inStage Fright, as well as films relying on tacit intradiegetic, unreliable narrators (focalising characters) an attempt is made to answer the thorny question of when the extradiegetic (cinematic) narrator can perform lies (through mendacious multimodal assertions) addressed by the collective sender to the recipient, and not just only other forms of deception, as is commonly maintained.

In this paper, the authors demonstrate that language diversity imposes a significant barrier in message communication like Short Messaging Service (SMS). SMS and other messaging services, including Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS) and e-mail, are widely used for person-to-person and Business-to-Consumer (B2C) communications due to their reach, simplicity and reliability of delivery. Reach and service delivery can be further enhanced if the message is delivered in the recipient’s preferred language. Using language translation software and a database server, the authors show that the messages can be delivered as per language preference of the recipient irrespective of the language of the original message. They demonstrate the proposed mechanism can deliver a large number of services, such as education, health care management, notification in emergency situations, news and weather reports, to those who are currently not able to access them due to language barrier.

The article contains a linguistic analysis of the book ‘The Drawn City’ by A. Ryzhkov; the book comprises reproductions of pictures and respective text in the context of a mental map of the city of Yekaterinburg. In approaching the mental map as spatial information in people’s minds, reflecting the image of the city, the goals of linguistic analysis are to show the vision of the metropolis and the linguistic ways of verbally expressing the thoughts and feelings of the landscape artist; to determine the value to society of the private perception of the city through artistic representation and textual expression. Stylistic analysis of the text reveals the dominant features regarding the lexical, morphological and syntactic levels, while the pragmatics of the text consider its social relevance. Peculiar traits of the author’s style of the artist and the writer, as perceived by readers, have been listed; important points of the mental map of the city have been defined accounting for the book’s content: architecture, dominant idea, eclectics. The perception of time in synchronicity and diachronicity in the narrative regarding Yekaterinburg is considered, the motif of transition from reality to imagery is shown. Examples are given of positive, negative and contradictory evaluations of architectural objects, verbally influencing readers through the creation of visual images. There are linguistic tricks listed which were used in the book by A. Ryzhkov uses language techniques that hold the attention of the recipient of the text: comparison, personification, the use of colloquial language, humour and wordplay, and dialogisation. Methods of the creation of an imagery-geographic map of urban space have been shown in the author’s iconic-symbolic form. A conclusion was made on the significance of the book of A. Ryzhkov having used a visual-verbal method for the creation of a sustainable and replicable image of the city in the human mind. The artist’s civic stance on city protection has been set forth.

Broadcasting and television are two popular types of media, with more audience than other types of media in Viet Nam today. Tay-Nung is a common language of two ethnic groups with the largest population of ethnic minorities in Viet Nam. Research on broadcasting and television in the Tay-Nung language is importance research, involving both journalism and the science of language. On the basis of surveys on the state of broadcasting in Tay-Nung language and the attitude, needs and aspirations of the Tay and Nung ethnicity on this activity, this article aims to describe and evaluate the current status of broadcasting in the Tay-Nung language, thereby proposing ways and means to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of broadcasting in Tay- Nung language. The main methods used in this study are a scientific observation method, a sociological survey method (interviews, discussions, investigation by questionnaires), method of description (analytical, statistical, classification, systematization) and a comparison method. Research data is collected from relevant documents and from the use of sociological survey methods. The subject of the article is the broadcast in Tay-Nung language activities in Viet Nam at present. This subject is considered in the following aspects; the places, the levels of broadcasting and television; the choice and use of language / dialect; attitude, needs and aspirations of the recipients, and some ways and solutions to be implemented. Research results of the project will help the Ministry of Information and Communication, in radio and television, to develop specific suggestions on the choice of type and level of communication. At the same time, the Viet Nam has also suggested the development of policies related to communication in ethnic minority languages. Raising the effectiveness of broadcasting in the Tay-Nung language will contribute to the preservation of language and culture; will improve quality of life for the Tay and Nung ethnicity and will contribute to sustainable development of nations in the renewal period. The work will inform work by the State, the Ministry of Information and Communication, should the State and the Ministry of Information and Communications pay attention to this timely guidance. Results will contribute to studies on communication in ethnic minority languages in Viet Nam or on communication in Tày Nùng in Southeast Asia.

Every calibration laboratory creates calibration certificates that report technical and operational information about a device. Frequently, calibration certificates are issued in Portable Document Format (PDF) with little concern over whether recipients can electronically extract and use the calibration data at their facility. Sometimes data is saved as an image within the PDF forcing the use of optical character recognition or manual transcription to extract any information. These practices effectively lock the data and make it difficult to extract automatically. Without accessible data, tasks involving multiple certificates, such as control charting or interval analysis, become impossible. A universal Measurement Information Infrastructure (MII) includes a calibration certificate in a standardized, open format that allows easy access to the data for analysis, yet can be presented in a traditional, readable form. This paper explores some proof-of-concept ideas under investigation at the Primary Standards Laboratory for such an enhanced calibration certificate. An open specification based on mature technology will ease the transition from existing information systems to new MII standards. This paper describes how to embed Extensible Markup Language (XML) data into a PDF certificate, extract the information for reuse, store calibration certificates in XML format, and extend and customize the certificate to satisfy all requirements in ISO/IEC 17025:2017(E).
