Background. In this article I review key studies in the academic literature on football (soccer) hooliganism in the UK and around the world. I apply Armstrong’s anthropological approach to our 15–20 member West Perth unofficial cheer squad (hard-core supporter group) of 1984–1986 (Australian Rules football’s WAFL competition). Method. This is an ethnographic study of the West Perth cheer squad 1984–86 told from the viewpoint of the author who was co-founder and co-leader of this group. It is both strength and weakness of the research data that the author was an active participant in the events rather than a researcher performing typical ethnographic research as a non-participant. Results. I find that the anthropological approach is able to explain many aspects of our cheer squad’s culture and members’ behaviours including the quick disintegration of the cheer squad early in the 1986 season without anyone officially ending it. However, our group members did not adjust their commitment downwards during the cheer squad’s years of action; most members attended all home-and-away matches during May 1984–March 1986. This research also shows the diffusion of Australian Rules football supporter culture from Melbourne to Adelaide and from these two cities to Perth, to a lesser extent, and the impact of TV news reports of British football hooliganism on our group’s style and macho posturing. Conclusion. Detailed long-term ethnographic studies of individual football (soccer) hooligan firms and Australian Rules’ cheer squads are the most vital type of new research.

In modern conditions of the growth of unlawful acts, the volume of functional load of law enforcement agencies and their insufficiency on the population for effective activity, people’s squads are an interesting and rele-vant tool for ensuring public security. This study examines the formation and development of this institution, as well as the dawn of this civil association during the Soviet era. Currently, we can see the “rebirth” of this institution. The most problematic issues on the organization and legal status of the squads were resolved in 2014 with the adoption of Federal Law no. 44 “On the participation of citizens in the protection of public order.” One of the main activities of modern squads is the crimes prevention among the population. This activity is quite relevant. The people’s squad institute attaches great importance to ensuring regional security. In particular, there are 24 people’s squads in Tambov region, with a total number of more than 750 people. The people’s squad “Derzhava” effectively implements its activities on the territory of Tambov region. This squad remains a pioneer and leader in this activity in Tambov region.

Talent identification and development typically involve allocation of resources toward athletes selected on the basis of early-career performance.Purpose:To compare 4 methods for early-career selection of Australia’s 2012 Olympic-qualifying swimmers.Methods:Performance times from 5738 Australian swimmers in individual Olympic events at 101 competitions from 2000 to 2012 were analyzed as percentages of world-record times using 4 methods that retrospectively simulated early selection of swimmers into a talent-development squad. For all methods, squad-selection thresholds were set to include 90% of Olympic qualifiers. One method used each swimmer’s given-year performance for selection, while the others predicted each swimmer’s 2012 performance. The predictive methods were regression and neural-network modeling using given-year performance and age and quadratic trajectories derived using mixed modeling of each swimmer’s annual best career performances up to the given year. All methods were applied to swimmers in 2007 and repeated for each subsequent year through 2011.Results:The regression model produced squad sizes of 562, 552, 188, 140, and 93 for the years 2007 through 2011. Corresponding proportions of the squads consisting of Olympic qualifiers were 11%, 11%, 32%, 43%, and 66%. Neural-network modeling produced similar outcomes, but the other methods were less effective. Swimming Australia’s actual squads ranged from 91 to 67 swimmers but included only 50−74% of Olympic qualifiers.Conclusions:Large talent-development squads are required to include most eventual Olympic qualifiers. Criteria additional to age and performance are needed to improve early selection of swimmers to talent-development squads.

Many national sporting organizations recruit talented athletes to well-resourced centralized training squads to improve their performance.Purpose: To develop a method to monitor performance progression of swimming squads and to use this method to assess the progression of New Zealand’s centralized elite swimming squad.Methods: Best annual long-course competition times of all New Zealand swimmers with at least 3 y of performances in an event between 2002 and 2013 were downloaded from takeyourmarks.com (~281,000 times from ~8500 swimmers). A mixed linear model accounting for event, age, club, year, and elite-squad membership produced estimates of mean annual performance for 175 swim clubs and mean estimates of the deviation of swimmers’ performances from their individual quadratic trajectories after they joined the elite squad. Effects were evaluated using magnitude-based inferences, with a smallest important improvement in swim time of –0.24%.Results: Before 2009, effects of elite-squad membership were mostly unclear and trivial to small in magnitude. Thereafter, both sexes showed clear additional performance enhancements, increasing from large in 2009 (males –1.4% ± 0.8%, females –1.5% ± 0.8%; mean ± 90% confidence limits) to extremely large in 2013 (males –6.8% ± 1.7%, females –9.8% ± 2.9%). Some clubs also showed clear performance trends during the 11-y period.Conclusions: Our method of quantifying deviations from individual trends in competition performance with a mixed model showed that Swimming New Zealand’s centralization strategy took several years to produce substantial performance effects. The method may also be useful for evaluating performance-enhancement strategies introduced at national or club level in other sports.

Abstract The paper presents result of an empirical study in which presence of values among workers of two mining squads characterized by different level of work performance has been compared. Values have been measured by two scales: Mining Values Scale (MVS) and Organizational Culture Assessment Instrument (OCAI). The squad with higher performance had significantly higher level of five out of nine values measured by (MVS); while none of the values measured by OCAI have been differentiating the squads with a statistical significance. The results suggest that Managing by Values (MBV) model for a mining corporation should rather be based on values specific for the mining industry rather than general management value set proposed by OCAI. Research results suggest also an association between presence of certain values and work satisfaction among workers.

Анотація:
The Army and Marine Corps have a need to increase infantry squad capabilities to improve tactical effectiveness while managing casualties. The Squad Overmatch (SOvM) project focused on the development and execution of a curriculum to incorporate Tactical Combat Casualty Care (TC3) coordination and decision-making into squad-level training, expanding a 2013 effort to enhance existing training methods and technologies with more realistic combat exercises and experiences. An integrated training approach (ITA), including knowledge and skills training for improving advanced situational awareness (ASA), resilience, TC3, medical skills/decision-making, and team performance was developed to help teams make better decisions from a tactical and teamwork perspective. Squads received foundation training in an instructor-led classroom setting, and then were given practice opportunities in scenario-based gaming and live scenarios. The ITA was designed to allow TC3 providers and squad leadership to practice and improve targeted skills in unit-level casualty scenarios balancing tactical and medical requirements. This paper examines the degree to which the ITA scenario training technologies provided the fidelity necessary to support SOvM-TC3 learning objectives. The results allow training designers to carefully assess how different technologies can impact training effectiveness.

In the article, the author considered the possibility of using unmanned aerial vehicles in the activities of a voluntary people’s squad during the protection of public order in the Russian Federation, the possibility of identifying violations and transmitting evidence obtained using unmanned aerial vehicles. The author found that the administrative-legal norms for the use of unmanned aerial vehicles by the people’s squad during the protection of public order in the Russian Federation have not been established, and therefore, in the opinion of the author, it is necessary to supplement the norms of civil law with the right to use technical equipment by people’s squads to protect public order. The author believes that the use of such means as an unmanned aerial vehicle would be justified, especially during mass events to ensure safety. The author believes that the urgent task in developing the legal regulation of the use of unmanned aerial vehicles by the national squad is to establish a balance in the administrative legal regulation of the use of unmanned aerial vehicles in order to optimally compromise the observance of the constitutional rights of citizens to privacy and public duty to protect public order.

The present study investigated the effect of including information to support transparency, based on the Situation awareness-based Agent Transparency (SAT) model, in the interface for an autonomous agent known as the Autonomous Squad Member (ASM). In four different SAT model-based display conditions, participants used the ASM’s interface to gain information about the ASM and simulated squad’s status as they completed a route containing obstacles. Results indicated that participants had greater trust in the ASM and were most effective at maintaining situation awareness when the ASM provided outcome predictions (SAT Level 3), in addition to planned actions (SAT Level 1) and a rationale for those actions (SAT Level 2). No differences in participant workload, while monitoring the ASM, were observed between SAT display conditions.

This work assessed the performance of a solution to the problem of assigning service squads, incorporating the variability of service times. The initial problem was modelled as a Travelling Salesman Problem (TSP), whose solution was obtained by the ant colony algorithm, showing the efficient route to be followed by the squad. Assessment of the performance of the solution by discrete event simulation (DES) included the travel time and added the service time. The TSP solution indicated that up to six customer visits could be carried out in an 8hour working day. Validation by DES presented a stable behavior of the variance, regardless of the number of visit sites assigned along the route.

L'interesse nei confronti delle strategie di brand discende da un lato dalla necessitŕ per le imprese sportive di diversificare le proprie attivitŕ e di svincolare le performance economiche dai risultati sul campo e, dall'altro, dalla progressiva affermazione delle relative squadre come veri e propri brand su cui far leva per rafforzare ed ampliare la propria posizione competitiva. Nella prima parte del lavoro viene pertanto analizzata l'affermazione della squadra quale brand evidenziando, al contempo, la necessitŕ di implementare adeguate strategie di sfruttamento dello stesso. Nella seconda parte sono dapprima identificate le tipologie di brand extension, quali line e category, di cui si delineano gli obiettivi, le modalitŕ di realizzazione e le criticitŕ ad esse associate; successivamente, č presentata la letteratura esistente sulla brand extension nelle imprese di servizi sportivi, la quale risente di un'attenzione finora modesta da parte degli Studiosi. Infine, sono discusse le opportunitŕ e le implicazioni manageriali conseguenti l'implementazione di strategie di brand extension nelle imprese di servizi sportivi, in particolare di calcio.

The complexity for being at the forefront regarding information retrieval systems are constantly increasing. Recent technology of natural language processing called BERT has reached superhuman performance in high resource languages for reading comprehension tasks. However, several researchers has stated that multilingual model’s are not enough for low-resource languages, since they are lacking a thorough understanding of those languages. Recently, a Swedish pre-trained BERT model has been introduced which is trained on significantly more Swedish data than the multilingual models currently available. This study compares both multilingual and Swedish monolingual inherited BERT model’s for question answering utilizing both a English and a Swedish machine translated SQuADv2 data set during its fine-tuning process. The models are evaluated with SQuADv2 benchmark and within a implemented question answering system built upon the classical retriever-reader methodology. This study introduces a naive and more robust prediction method for the proposed question answering system as well finding a sweet spot for each individual model approach integrated into the system. The question answering system is evaluated and compared against another question answering library at the leading edge within the area, applying a custom crafted Swedish evaluation data set. The results show that the fine-tuned model based on the Swedish pre-trained model and the Swedish SQuADv2 data set were superior in all evaluation metrics except speed. The comparison between the different systems resulted in a higher evaluation score but a slower prediction time for this study’s system.

Bride Squad es un modelo de negocio que satisface las demandas del mercado de despedidas de solteras, otorgando productos innovadores que complementan las temáticas propuestas por evento. El problema que nos permite llevar a cabo este proyecto va más allá de la tendencia de consumo y la casi inexistente oferta de productos de calidad que puedan ser utilizados para la despedida de soltera de una gran amiga, hermana o hija. Decidimos investigar algunos componentes del mercado, como: el origen del problema, las preferencias del consumidor y la necesidad de incluir productos ajustados a las exigencias de este. Posteriormente, por medio de entrevistas y encuestas; adicionalmente a analizar fuentes secundarias; hemos podido validar la siguiente hipótesis: “Las personas que realizan una despedida de soltera no encuentran con facilidad una tienda que les brinde accesorios y prendas que vayan con sus gustos”. En este trabajo aportamos una extensa investigación sobre dicho mercado, tales como: tamaño de mercado, análisis externo e interno, experimentos de validación, y demás. Adicionalmente, hemos utilizado herramientas aplicadas de administración; tales como, el modelo de Canvas, matriz de flujogramas, diagramas de Gantt, FODA, matriz de Peyea, matrices EFE y EFI, entre otras. Finalmente, hicimos uso de herramientas financieras, las cuales, junto con el pronóstico de ventas estimado, nos permitió presentar el Estado de Resultados y Balance General. Con estos y el costo de capital, determinamos el VAN de nuestro modelo de negocio; así como, los ratios oportunos para afirmar con que nuestro modelo es económicamente viable y escalable.
Bride Squad is a business model that meets the demands of the bachelorette market, providing innovative products that complement the themes proposed by event. The problem that made us develop this project is the almost non-existent offer of quality products that can be used at a bachelorette party of a friend, sister or daughter. We decided to investigate some market components, such as: the origin of the problem, consumer preferences and the needs to include these in the market to solve the problems. Subsequently, through interviews and surveys and the analysis of secondary sources, we were able to validate the following hypothesis: "People who organize a bachelorette party cannot easily find a store that provides them with accessories and clothes that match their tastes". In this work we provide extensive research on this market, such as: market size, external and internal analysis, validation experiments, and so on. Additionally, we applied administration tools; such as, canvas model, flowchart matrix, Gantt diagrams, SWOT, Peyea matrix, EFE and IFE matrixes, among others. Finally, we made use of financial tools, which together with the estimated sales forecast, allowed us to present the Income Statement and Balance Sheet. With these and the cost of equity, we determine the NPV of our business model; as well as, the appropriate ratios to affirm that our model is economically viable and scalable.

Анотація:

This paper describes the Swedish reconnaissance squads in the engineer battalions, their equipment, tasks and organization. An analysis is made to compare the present weapons and fire power of the reconnaissance squad with an extended weapon alternative. The analysis focuses on the abilities effect, protection and movement in different situations typical of a reconnaissance squad.

The facts that are presented in this paper are mostly founded on the new field manual FältarbR Dyktjänst 2007, which regulates much of the reconnaissance activities. The aim of this paper is the making of a contribution in the developing progress of the new field manual and the reconnaissance squads in Swedish engineer battalions.

The result of the analysis shows that the extended weapon alternative would be an asset.

A platoon commander has a helicopter to support two squads, which encounter two types of missions -- critical or routine --on a daily basis. During a mission, a squad always benefits from having the helicopter, but the benefit is greater during a critical mission than during a routine mission. Because the commander cannot verify the mission type beforehand, a selfish squad would always claim a critical mission to compete for the helicopterâ which leaves the commander no choice but to assign the helicopter at random. In order to encourage truthful reports from the squads, we design a token system that works as follows. Each squad keeps a token bank, with tokens deposited at a certain frequency. A squad must spend either 1 or 2 tokens to request the helicopter, while the commander assigns the helicopter to the squad who spends more tokens, or breaks a tie at random. The two selfish squads become players in a two-person non-zero-sum game. We find the Nash Equilibrium of this game, and use numerical examples to illustrate the benefit of the token system.

This CAPSTONE Report documents the Systems Engineering (SE) efforts of "Team Marine," from JAN 2009 to SEP 2009, in developing a recommendation to the US Marine Corps Systems Command (MCSC), on the best course of action to 'Enhance the USMC Expeditionary Rifle Squad Communications System.' The squad leader is the cornerstone for USMC tactical operations. Clear, concise, accurate and reliable communications to and from the squad leader is the key to squad operations, performance and tactical effectiveness. Today's fielded communications system for the squad leader requires the use of two separate radios, each with different encryption algorithms, different user interfaces, and different data processing capabilities. This primitive design has thrust the squad leader into a complex Human Factors environment with disparate components that have not been well engineered or integrated. Team Marine applied and tailored the systems engineering (SE) process based on NPS course work and professional experience. This SE process enabled the team to completely understand and model the current system in terms of architecture, capabilities and functions. The process led the team and stakeholders to conclude that an evolutionary approach of system integration was preferred over the traditional Manufacturer A vs. Manufacturer B run off. The team's recommendation is to pursue an integrated communications system, based on existing and emerging components, as the best course of action. The first incremental step of the recommendation is to upgrade the existing elements by adding an automated communications processor with enhanced human to system interfaces.

Abstract Dents, especially those interacting with stress risers, can pose integrity threats to pipeline systems. Regulations in Canada and the United States mandate the repair of dents based on depth and interaction with stress risers, however, there have been cases in the past where dents that have passed these criteria have ended up in loss of containment. Recent industry’s recommendations regarding dent integrity analysis are predominantly based on strain, and the dent-fatigue models have been proven to be limited in their application. Additionally, these models or methodologies are generally deterministic which may not fully account for uncertainties associated with pipe properties and in-line inspection (ILI) tool measurement. Enbridge Liquid Pipelines Inc. had previously presented a framework to support system wide dent assessment with an efficient probabilistic-based calibrated semi-quantitative analysis method for dents (SQuAD), which elicits potentially injurious features from thousands of features within a system in a reasonable analysis timeframe. This paper expands on the authors’ previous work and presents several improvements that have since been made to the SQuAD model to address the limitations in the initial version of the model. The previous version of SQuAD was strain-based and did not explicitly account for pressure-cycling induced, fatigue-based failure quantitatively. An approximate circle fitting method was adopted for estimating the dent’s radii of curvature in order to calculate strains. In the improved model, filtering techniques have been employed to reduce the noise in the ILI-reported data while preserving the dent shape. Furthermore, a simplified FEA process has been developed to calculate the stresses within a dent due to pressure cycles, thus the fatigue-based Probability of Failure (PoF) of a dent can now be estimated using S-N approach. The filtered data allows for better accuracy in quantifying the radius of curvature of dents as reported by ILI tools, which are used for calculating dent strain as recommended in the updated version of ASME B31.8, Appendix R. Finally, the feasibility of applying this improved SQuAD model is discussed from an operator’s perspective. The improvements allow the enhanced SQuAD model to be used as an effective screening tool on a system-wide basis as part of a comprehensive, reliability-based dent assessment framework.

Анотація:
In this paper, we introduce the Reinforced Mnemonic Reader for machine reading comprehension tasks, which enhances previous attentive readers in two aspects. First, a reattention mechanism is proposed to refine current attentions by directly accessing to past attentions that are temporally memorized in a multi-round alignment architecture, so as to avoid the problems of attention redundancy and attention deficiency. Second, a new optimization approach, called dynamic-critical reinforcement learning, is introduced to extend the standard supervised method. It always encourages to predict a more acceptable answer so as to address the convergence suppression problem occurred in traditional reinforcement learning algorithms. Extensive experiments on the Stanford Question Answering Dataset (SQuAD) show that our model achieves state-of-the-art results. Meanwhile, our model outperforms previous systems by over 6% in terms of both Exact Match and F1 metrics on two adversarial SQuAD datasets.
