The predictors of good personal hygiene for schoolchildren were the existence of a good level of sanitation at home (OR = 1.62; 95% CI = 1.24–2.13) and a primary school education as the minimum level of e

Developmental transitions are experienced throughout the life-span and necessitate adapting to significant and unpredictable changes (Heckhausen et al., 2010; Perry, 2003). The shift from high school to university in young adulthood serves as an exemplar of how these challenging junctures can undermine motivation and well-being. Recent evidence suggests that most (85%) young adults making this transition feel overwhelmed, half (50%) experience immense anxiety (ACHA, 2012), and more than one quarter (28%) withdraw from their institutions by the end of their first year (Snyder & Dillow, 2013).

Abstract:
Childhood obesity and loss of physical fitness are rising problems internationally. Although research concerning mitigation strategies has been enforced, empirical results until now fail to address problems and needs of the Gulf region, which has unique geographical and cultural features. Therefore, this study investigated academic performance and physical fitness in normal, overweight, and obese child handball athletes in Qatar. Measurements included anthropometric data (BMI and body fat percentage (%BF)), and physical performance tests: agility T-half test; squat jump (SJ), and countermoveme

The article presents the results of longitudinal analysis of dynamics of regulatory, personal, motivational characteristics and academic success in students with decline of psychological well-being during the transition from grade 5 to 6. A group of 6th graders whose psychological well-being significantly decreased in comparison with the 5th grade (N = 26) was identified. We compared of indicators of conscious self-regulation (V. I. This report characterizes the educational system in the Canary Islands in terms of inequality, inequity and inequality of opportunities in academic performance. We use census and/or sample data on compulsory primary and secondary education students enrolled in 2015-2016, 2016-2017, 2017-2018 and 2018-2019 academic years. This data is provided by the Agencia Canaria de Calidad Universitaria y Evaluación Educativa (ACCUEE) through its periodic diagnostic assessment reports. Our results reveal that, in terms of inequality and inequity in compulsory secondary education, Canary Islands are not situ

Abstract:
This paper examines a large-scale randomized evaluation of the One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) program in 531 rural primary schools, as implemented by the Peruvian government starting in 2009. We use administrative and survey data on academic achievement and grade progression through 2019 to estimate the long-run effects of educational technology on i) academic performance and grade progression in schools over time and ii) student trajectories as they progress from primary school to university. We find negative and significant effects on completing primary and secondary education on time but no ef

We exploit the randomized evaluation of a remedying education intervention that improved the reading skills of low-performing third grade students in Colombia, to study whether providing educational support to low-achieving students affects the academic performance of their higher-achieving classmates. We find that the test scores of non-treated children in treatment schools increased by 0.108 of a standard deviation compared to similar children in control schools. We interpret the reduced-form effect on higher-achieving students as a spillover effect within treated schools. We then estimate a

Vietnam’s strong performance on the 2012 and 2015 PISA assessments has led to interest in what explains the strong academic performance of Vietnamese students. Analysis of the PISA data has not shed much light on this issue. This paper analyses a much richer data set, the Young Lives data for Ethiopia, India (Andhra Pradesh and Telangana), Peru and Vietnam, to investigate the reasons for the strong academic performance of 15-year-olds in Vietnam. Differences in observed child and household characteristics explain 37-39% of the gap between Vietnam and Ethiopia, while observed school variables e

In today's knowledge-based societies, understanding basic scientific concepts and the capacity to structure and solve scientific questions is more critical than ever. We document positive and significant improvements of 0.18 standard deviations in standardised test scores. This paper contains a new analysis of gender differences in early grade reading and mathematics outcomes in 19 USAID-funded studies over the past decade from 14 locations in Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East. The paper addresses gaps in the literature related to learning patterns for girls and boys in lower- and middle-income countries and in early primary school. We analyzed the results from reading and mathematics assessments in grades 2 and 3, including differences in oral reading fluency (ORF) and quantitative comparison scores between boys and girls, as well as differences
