Application of InAs/AlSb materials system for development of short-wavelength quantum cascade lasers is explored. Molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) technology allowing to grow multiperiodical unstrained InAs/AlSb heterostructures with roughness of 1-2 monolayers is developed. It is demonstrated that InAs/AlSb materials system is well-suitable for development of short-wavelength quantum cascade lasers operating below 4 µm wavelength. A reliable procedure has been developed which facilitates the fabrication of low-leakage front and back gated lateral transport devices in which electrons and holes reside in adjacent layers. This gating permits the alteration of the electron and hole densities in such devices almost independently of one another. Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease affecting upper and lower motor neurons. Although many cellular processes such as cytoskeletal maintenance and synaptic function are disrupted in ALS, the molecular mechanisms by which these defects arise remain poorly understood. Symptoms begin focally in one muscle and then spread contiguously, resulting in progressive paralysis and death from respiratory failure. In the first part parametric models for which the likelihood is intractable are discussed. A method for fitting such models when simulation from the model is possible is presented, which gives estimates that are linear functions of a possibly large set of candidate features. A combination of simulations based on a fractional design and sets of discriminant analyses is used to find an optimal estimate of the parameter vector and its covariance matrix.
