Abstract:
Many existing and emerging diseases of humans are of zoonotic origin. In addition, the development of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) presents a serious risk for hospitals, agriculture, and the community. Habitat loss and degradation are forcing many wild animal populations into closer contact with human populations, presenting opportunities for the introduction and transmission of bacterial diseases. In Australia, many shorebird species undertake yearly migrations to and from breeding grounds in the high Artic, and during their migrations they pass over one-third of the human population. To de

Full text
Abstract:
Sortase A is a housekeeping enzyme of Gram-positive bacteria that catalyses the anchoring of surface proteins to the bacterial peptidoglycan. The enzyme works to establish an interaction between bacteria and host cells and is essential for pathogenesis. This makes Sortase A a potential suitable target for inhibition, in order to treat bacterial infections. In this degree project Sortase A from Staphylococcus aureus was explored and potential inhibitors were investigated by performing enzyme activity and bacterial binding assays. A robust FRET assay was developed and optimized for a recombinant

All natural aquatic systems harbour a vast variety of microorganisms. In the aquatic microbial food web, the larger microorganisms (i.e. protozoa) feed on the smaller microorganisms (i.e. bacteria and phytoplankton). An increase in nutrient availability results in changes of the microbial food web structure, like altered community composition and blooms of toxic phytoplankton. In this thesis work I hypothesised that nutrient-rich aquatic environments, with strong protozoan predation, favour the occurrence of predation-resistant bacteria like F. tularensis, and that the microbial food web may p

Abstract:
Antibiotics are administered to livestock at subtherapeutic levels to maintain animal health. Many of the antibiotics used are analogues or the same as those used in human medicine, raising the possibility that genes conferring resistance arise within agricultural production systems. This thesis examined antibiotic resistance in the Canadian beef feedlot industry. Real-time, quantitative PCR was used to examine differences in the relative abundance of eighteen resistance genes across five antibiotic families from feedlot cattle faeces and urban environments. Abstract:
Bacteriophages are viruses that specifically infect bacteria. The bactericidal nature of lytic bacteriophages has been exploited by scientists for decades with the hope to utilise them in the fight against bacterial infections and antibiotic resistant bacteria in medical settings. More recently, the potential applications of bacteriophages for biocontrol in the agrifood and environmental sectors have been investigated in an attempt to develop ‘natural’ antimicrobial products. Bacteriophages have a couple of decisive advantages over conventional methods of controlling pathogenic bacteria, such

Uvod: Antimikrobna rezistencija bakterija predstavlja globalni problem. Cilj: Analiza

Abstract:
The emergence and rapid spread of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a phenomenon that extends beyond clinical settings. AMR has been detected in multiple environmental compartments, including agricultural soils and water bodies impacted by wastewater discharges. The purpose of this research project was to evaluate what factors could influence the environmental persistence of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), as well as to identify potential strategies employed by human pathogens to survive in secondary environment outside the host.
