Full textIn this work, we adress the following question: how does "quand" change the interpretation that may be made of a sequence of clauses P. Q or Q. P when it prefixes P? After highlighting the problems that this matter raises in several pioneering studies in temporal semantics, we provide arguments to defend the theory E accepted by several authors E that quand P is a temporal locating adverbial. We show that the discourse properties of P, which is often treated in the literature as a presupposed proposition, is explained by the following single constraint: "quand" demands to treat this clause as the description of a time mark to be used in the interpretation of Q. We further show that the theory that "quand P" designates a time mark accounts for the constraints on the temporal relations that can be established between eP and eQ, the events of both clauses. In particular, we argue that the inference that eQ immediately follows eP reflects one of the relations that can be established between the referent of a temporal locating adverbial and the event it locates: the referent of the adverbial provides an initial bound to the interval of occurrence of the event. Finally, we study how the event description and the tense of P contribute to the semantics of the adverbial "quand P". We specify the quantificational and temporal properties imparted to the referent of quand P by the different tenses of French and explain these properties by co-occurrence constraints that impact the use of tenses in P and Q

Full textNigerian learners of French as a Foreign Language are generally faced with difficulties while using French Past Tenses in producing written composition. In this thesis, we are particularly interested in the case of the Yoruba learners of French language. The analysis of their written composition copies reveals that most of the errors committed originate from the mother tongue, Yoruba which does not know the tense-markedness of French language with her conjugation and complicated verb endings. This specifically means that there are problems closely related to the French Language herself. Actually, Yoruba learners find it particularly difficult to use French temporal adverbs and shifters in their written composition copies. On the other hand, through our analysis of copies of two objective tests in which students were to produce the missing verb forms, we also found that the learners lack some theoretical linguistic knowledge which is important in understanding French past tenses : for instance, Benveniste's “Discours & récit” and Weinrich's “Premier plan / Arrière-plan”. In addition, our analysis of the tempo-aspectual systems of both languages shows that contrary to French language, Yoruba aspects and tenses do not function separately.We believe that students would better understand the use of French past tenses if they have a good grasp of the “grammatical aspect” notion and if this linguistic notion is taken into account while teaching the topic. We brought the research to a close with different suggestions on how to improve the teaching / learning of the French tenses concerned here. On the whole, placing oneself on the didactic perspective, we are of the opinion that all these information put together can help develop a Methodology for the teaching and learning of French past tenses; and by so doing, advance the more the cause of the teaching and learning of French in Nigeria

Full textThe expression of intensification has hardly been tackled by the linguistic community over the years. The research that has been conducted so far is usually restricted to intensifying adverbs, which are generally considered as morphosyntactic processes. Intensifying adverbs, also referred to as “intensifiers”, are submitted to constant renewal. However, intensifiers appear to be at the junction of grammar and lexis. First, a new typology of the processes used to express intensification will be put forward. The fact that the various processes often overlap will be taken into account. The specific case of intensifiers will then be dealt with in the light of grammaticalization and lexicalization, two processes which seem to be at work in the evolution of intensifiers. Lastly, a corpus-based study will look into the diachronic evolution of intensifiers in order to unveil the mechanisms of renewal and language change

Full textAttempts to describe regional variation in French during the Seventeenth and the Eighteenth centuries have mainly relied in the past few years on literature, lexicography, regional glossaries and overseas varieties of French. Although these type of sources have offered reliable findings – we also use them extensively in this study –, regional and non standard varieties of French of the Seventeenth and the Eighteenth centuries still remain only partially described. Another type of source, which we examine in this work, has not been sufficiently considered until now : non-literary private writings. This neglect may be explained at least partly by the lack of reliable editions and the great mass of archival material.Drawing on an original corpus comprised of unpublished sources, which includes accounts, records, personal correspondence and minutes, this study describes Seventeenth- and Eighteenth-Century French in Upper Normandy, with specific attention to its regional and popular features

This study examines, on the one hand, the final value of the prepositions por and para and how lexical aspect influences their commutation in a final proposition. On the other hand, this thesis analyses the values of the Spanish past (cantaba) and the periphrastic spanish form estar + -ndo from an aspectual point of view. This study also develops the role taken by verbal and lexical aspect on the commutation of these verbal forms. Furthermore, some lexical incompatibilities due to interaction of verbal and lexical aspect are treated here

Full textThis dissertation is a reflection on the linguistic and ethical issues at play in translation, hinging on an examination of the temporal and aspectual values in the French and Bulgarian languages. The question of aspect in Bulgarian is approached through the study of its possible translations in French.The orientations of this work go along the belief that translation plays a crucial role in the understanding of the mechanisms underlying the functioning of languages.The theoretical approach of this dissertation made it necessary to describe the following temporal paradigms: the aorist and perfect in Bulgarian, the “passé simple”, “imparfait” and “passé composé” in French. It also considers and illustrates some orthonymic devices so as to underline the importance of the referential experience in the craft of writing a translation, and also to highlight the omnipresence, in the translator’s mind, of a conception of what is natural and appropriate to say in a given language. Going through the notions of tense and aspect made it possible to shed light on the handling of the secondary imperfective forms, which proves to be essential for the comprehension of aspect. Moreover, even though the original text and the translation give different perspectives on the action, preferring one interpretation or the other does not obstruct the reader’s understanding. These divergences prove that the existence of aspectual oppositions in Bulgarian are hardly ever taken into account when translated. The examination of the perfect led to the broadening of our study to the analysis of meditative values, the expression of which, in Bulgarian, is strongly integrated in the morphology of the verbs

Full textThe aim of this dissertation is to explore the syntactic-semantic interface of ‘constructions’ which contain secondary predicates – either depictive or resultative. The main problems will be to deal (i) with the selection of the subjects (or hosts) of these types of predicates and (ii) with the aspectual class of the verbs used in these sentences.In the first part, the various patterns implied in resultative clauses will be examined, leading to the conclusion that the basic principle that governs the syntax of these clauses can be identified with the ‘Restriction on direct objects’ – or RDO. First, the semantics of gradable adjectives will be revisited, taking into account the scalarity properties these adjectives contain, which determine the eventive/ aspectual structures of resultative sentences and the distinction between Control structures and Exceptional Case Marking sentences. After invalidating many would-be counter-examples to the RDO, its validity will be reasserted, notably as a diagnostic of unaccusativity in English. Next, after analysing the problem of unselected object arguments, the reason will be shown why Russian does not possess this type of structure, and why it cannot be characterised as a ‘satellite-framed’ language either – given that the parameter which allows specific resultative structures in any language also determines its classification as satellite-framed or verb-framed.The second part of the dissertation is devoted to depictive predicates – in particular (i) to the constraints that determine the choice of the Controller in this type of secondary predication, and (ii) to the relevant properties of depictive adjectives in contra-distinction to other types of adjuncts, often identified as ‘participant-oriented’. Finally, the distribution of those Russian adjectives which possess long and short forms, which is conditioned by specific agreement or concord properties, is examined, leading to a tentative reconstruction of a diachronic process which has led to their distribution in today's Russian

Full textL’innu est une langue algonquienne parlée au Québec et au Labrador par environ 10 000 locuteurs. Ce mémoire examine l’aspectualité de la voix passive ainsi que le phénomène du passif lexical en innu, un sous-type de passif peu documenté au sein des langues algonquiennes. L’étude de cas menée dans ce but révèle que certaines formes verbales passives en innu peuvent osciller entre une sémantique dynamique et stative/résultative. Ce mémoire propose d’envisager les formes statives/résultatives comme des formes passives lexicalisées dans la langue. L’étude met aussi en lumière des formes verbales apparentées à la voix passive et à la voix moyenne également présentes dans d’autres langues algonquiennes qui sont traitées comme des passifs lexicaux en tant que tels dans le présent travail. Les annexes fournissent les données de l’étude de cas menée dans le cadre de ce mémoire ainsi qu’une sélection de phrases passives tirées de l’ouvrage Eukuan nin matshimanitu innu-iskueu (Kapesh, 1976). Les annexes fournissent également une sélection de formes verbales passives transitives ainsi qu’une sélection des formes verbales traitées comme des passifs lexicaux. Ces deux sélections sont extraites à partir du dictionnaire innu en ligne.
Innu is an Algonquian language spoken in Québec and Labrador by around 10 000 speakers. This thesis investigates the aspectual properties of the passive voice as well as the phenomenon of lexical passive, a subtype of passive that remains poorly documented in Algonquian languages. The case study carried out with this aim reveals that certain passive verbal forms in Innu can have either a dynamic or a stative/resultative semantics. This thesis explores forward the idea of considering stative/resultative forms as lexicalized passive forms in the language. Moreover, the study highlights a number of verbal forms related to passive and middle voice also found in other Algonquian languages. These forms are considered as lexical passives in this thesis. Appendices show the data of the case study study as well as a selection of passive sentences from the book Eukuan nin matshimanitu innu-iskueu (Kapesh, 1976). Appendices show also a selection of transitive passive verbal forms and a selection of verbal forms analyzed as lexical passives in this study. Those selection are all extracted from the Innu online dictionnary.

Full textThis work aimed at determining using Positon Emission Tomography (PET) the areas implicated in lexical relearning in aphasic patients and healthy subjects who were trained over one month to learn French words for aphasic patients and foreign words (English or Spanish) for healthy subjects. In healthy subjects, post-training recall was associated with right prefrontal and insular activations, which seemed to be language-independent. Long-delay recall would require left posterior areas. In patients, similar right prefrontal and insular activations were found. The right frontal-insular activations in patients would not correspond to a “lesional” but rather to a “functional” compensatory activity since it is present also in healthy subjects

Full textThis thesis constitutes an empirical and theoretical contribution to the formal study of the Vietnamese verbal system. More precisely, it concentrates on issues of unaccusativity and diathetical alternations in this language. To this end, it puts under close scrutiny the key role played by the polyfunctional marker bị within intransitive predicate constructions. It will be shown that bị is compatible with unaccusative verbs and can combine with unergative ones only if those verbs undergo unaccusativization when provided with suitable lexical material. The hypothesis put forward, which is couched within the framework of Chomsky’s The Minimalist Program (1995 et seq.), treats this morpheme as a semi-lexical/semi-functional category and as the head of a High Applicative projection, situated immediately above vP. From a semantic point of view, bị denotes a relationship between an individual and an eventuality. It will be established that bị can be a Phase-head or a non-phasal one. A closer inspection of a subclass of stative predicates, those which denote permanent states, suggests a reassessment of the role played by Inner Aspect (Aktionsart) in the calculus of unaccusativity. The analysis proposed not only accounts for sentences that are traditionally classified as passive constructions, but it also gives an explanation for the incompatibility between bị and some middle constructions. Furthermore, it will be put forward that this type of incompatibility is due to the absence of a vP-internal aspectual projection which hosts in its Specifier an Inadvertent/Unintentional Causer DP. It will also be claimed that the vP-edge is active for discursive purposes, which reinforces the parallelism between CP Phase and vP Phase

Full textThis dissertation analyses the subeventive decomposition and aspectual interpretation of events, paying special attention to derived predicates in Basque, like dantzatu ‘to dance’ from dantza ‘dance’, amets egin ‘to dream’ from amets ‘dream’, etxeratu ‘to go home’ from etxe-ra ‘to home’ and amatu ‘to become a mother’ from ama ‘mother’. The discussion is mainly concerned with the syntactic configuration that represents the predicates’ event structure and the lexicalization of these configurations by means of actual words. In this dissertation, it is assumed that predicates can be decomposed into more basic components (e.g. Levin & Rappaport Hovav 1995) and that this decomposition is syntactically represented (Hale & Keyser 1993). To be more precise, in the analysis made in this dissertation, it is assumed that the events conveyed by predicates consist of smaller subevents (Harley 1995 2005, Cuervo 2003, Folli & Harley 2005, Ramchand 2008) (which can be either processes or states) and Rheme objects (Ramchand 2008a). Rhemes are complements which describe and measure the particular subevent they are complementing. They can be of different types: PPs, quanticized DPs and even a-categorial Roots. Building on Harley (2005), I propose an ontology of Roots which classifies different types of Roots depending on whether they name an Event, a Thing or a Property. Event and Thing naming Roots are the complements of the process subevent, whereas Property naming Roots are the complements of states. Within each class, properties of the measure associated to each Root like [±incremental], [±lower bound] and [±upper bound] are going to determine the aspectual properties of the entire event, i.e. whether it is durative or punctual, and telic or atelic. Additionally, this dissertation considers the interaction of the aspectual interpretation of the predicates (commented in the previous paragraph) with viewpoint aspect (Smith 1997 [1991]). Full textStudying the lexical and grammatical uses of do means engaging with a pivotal element of predicative anaphora. Linguists fail to agree on how to categorise do as used in anaphoric contexts: some take it tobe an auxiliary, others to be a lexical verb and still others to be intermediate between those two categories whenever it seems impossible to draw a clear line between lexical and grammatical instances. Based on a diachronic and synchronic survey of the uses of do, this dissertation uncovers the specific properties of the various forms of the verb and brings to light a “factitive” meaning sharedby all those forms, provided do takes some complementation (verbal in the case of auxiliary do, nominal or adverbial in the case of lexical do). Close scrutiny of electronic corpora of present-day English reveals that this factitive meaning blurs the boundary between lexical and grammatical occurrences. If it were not for an in-depth analysis of do as it occurs in various sentential contexts, the syntactic differences between its grammatical and lexical uses might be obscured by their semantic unity

Full textIf we consider that grammar is an intellectual construct and not a natural object and therefore it may takes various forms depending of the linguistic context, why should it be the same for native speakers and foreigners?This study is located in the Polish context of teaching / learning of French as a foreign language. In particular, it concerns the passé composé and imparfait, the use of which is often the first hurdle for Polish students learning French. This is due to the fact that descriptions which are suggested to polish students, rarely take into account the fact that the passé compose and the imparfait respectively, don’t have the same aspectual value as the perfective and the imperfective verbs in polish.Therefore, the aim of this study was to develop a contextualized description of the tenses in question, which would be more operational for Polish learners, being based on their metalinguistic culture rather than traditional descriptions.For this purpose, we’ve analyzed the ways of expression of four types of knowledge circulating in the Polish educational context in relation to the passé composé and imparfait. These include knowledge from scholars of linguistics, knowledge disclosed by various forms of didactic transposition, knowledge derived from professional experience of teachers and finally the so-called "colloquial" knowledge, which consists of linguistic representations of Polish students

Full textPrevious studies in language acquisition have claimed that the verbal forms in early child language are limited to the expression of the here and now (Weist, 1991). However, a study of the verbal temporal system in French children’s speech (Parisse & Morgenstern, 2012) has shown that the children are able to refer to past events from an early age before they produce specific grammatical markers. Studies on the acquisition of aspect have established a strong correlation between the production of telic verbs and perfective aspect, without distinguishing between the present perfect and past tense. Slobin (1994) has shown that the first uses of the present perfect serve specific communicative functions that relate to the expression of result and experience. To our knowledge, no developmental study of the acquisition of the present perfect has been conducted so far. We conducted a study of how two British children use the present perfect in connection with their first uses of the markers referring to the here and now and their early productions of past tense. We examined the early uses of the markers in relation to the uses identified in the child directed speech in two dense oral corpora. Analyses based on qualitative and quantitative data were conducted on the adult and the child’s speech in the context of the interactions between the two (Tomasello, 2003). Our results suggest that the early productions of the present perfect result from the frequency of the marker found in the input and the cognitive development of the children. The study shows that they first rely on a visible resultant state in T0. Gradually, the children come to use the resultant state attached to the production of the marker to verbalise presupposed expectations or intentions in T0. By doing so, the children ask their caregivers to address specific needs that are expressed in the current situation

Full textThe aim of this thesis is to study the acquisition of French (L3) past tenses by Japanese learners. In French learning, strong emphasis is placed on the grammatical category of verbs, and learners show major difficulties in the acquisition of use of verb tenses, especially regarding the distinction between French perfect and imperfect tenses. The system of temporal-aspect markers in Japanese differs from that of the L3. How can Japanese learners’ linguistic competence in use of French past tenses be improved? Do previously acquired languages, namely English (L2) and Japanese (L1), have any specific influences? The objective of this research is to determine, on one hand, whether Japanese learners’ L2 grammatical knowledge helps or hinders learning these two L3 verb tenses and, on the other hand, whether the influence of learners’ L1 concepts is confirmed in the way such learners distinguish between L3 perfect and imperfect past tenses. The results show that formal and functional similarities between L3 and previous acquired languages make it easier for Japanese learners to acquire L3 past tense competence, but also that there are negative influences of their L2 and L1 languages on their use of L3 verb tenses

Full textWord recognition, according to the adult readers’ lexical skill differences (reading, spelling and vocabulary levels). To do so, we tested the orthographic neighborhood frequency effect by deletion and substitution of a letter in lexical decision (Exp.1, 4), progressive demasking (Exp 2, 5), denomination (Exp. 3, 6), and color categorization tasks (Exp.7). Response times were longer and the error rates were higher for words with at least one higher frequency neighbor than for words without such a neighbor, which can be explained in terms of lexical competition. In addition, the lexical competition of the higher-frequency deletion neighbor seems more important for individuals with high lexical skills than for those with low lexical skills (Exp 1, 3), the latter showing difficulties in inhibiting the competitor. Furthermore, individuals with low lexical skills were slower and less accurate than those with high lexical skills (Exp 1-7). Data from the categorization task (Exp. 7) suggest difficulties in setting up inhibition for these individuals. Finally, we have shown that the orthographic neighborhood frequency effect was influenced by the confusability of the substituted letter, differing according to the lexical skills of the individuals (Exp 4-6). In the theoretical framework of activation-interactive and spatial coding, the data highlight the importance of readers’ differences in lexical skills for the diffusion of lexical activation and inhibition in visual word recognition

Full textThis comparative study deals with a corpus of written narratives of Chinese FL2 and FL3 learners in school settings. The two groups of learners have the same L1 (Chinese), but different access to the target language, French (with or without English L2). The analysis takes into account the differences between the three languages, a Romance language (French), a Germanic language (English), and a typologically different L1 (Chinese). The thesis deals with the following research questions : how do Chinese FL2 and FL3 learners use past verbal tense at the beginner and intermediate levels. What are the roles of L1 and L2 for FL3 learners ? The data are analysed from a semantic (aspect hypothesis, Andersen & Shirai 1994) and a functional (discourse hypothesis, Hopper 1979) point of view. The results show that the use of the imparfait in both groups of learners does not follow the AH. They also show that learners have difficulties distinguishing the foreground from the background of the narrative. Moreover, both L1 and L2 exert influence over L3 acquisition

Full textThis PhD dissertation focuses upon the change of communicative norms in contemporary German and positions itself on the explanatory paradigm of language change by Rudi Keller,also known as “the theory of the invisible hand”. My research aims at pointing out – through the analysis of five “variant” facts – that the change of communicative norms is driven by the desire of contemporary German native speakers for more authenticity as well as respect for the other. The communicative mentality inherited from the counter-culture movements in the late 1960’s that challenged society order influences German native speakers’ expectations towards the reception of public discourses in terms of ethos and ethical positioning. In addition to the corpus upon which the linguistic analyses of the five variant facts are carriedout – the “negative words” (or “belastete Wörter”), euphemistic neologisms, gender neutralisation, the ethos of politicians, being on first name terms with someone – which consists of prescriptive college documents, political discourses and the advertising supports ofthe German public space – , there is a reception corpus that amounts to epilinguistic type and is composed of metacomments from non-specialist speakers. The study brings the speech ofordinary speakers to the fore as a sign that announces and goes along with language change
