Linear alkylbenzenes (LAB) are key intermediates in the synthesis of linear alkylbenzene sulfonate surfactants that are used in the manufacture of detergents. Production of LAB with traditional Lewis acids as catalysts, such as hydrofluoric acid, results in the formation of large amounts of toxic wastes and corrosion of industrial equipment. Phosphotungstic acid (PTA) has gained much attention in recent years as a solid catalyst for various alkylation reactions. This research work aims to develop a novel material based on PTA-containing silica gel, which can effectively catalyze LAB synthesis.

We present the synthesis and characterisation of novel single organic molecules known as phenoxylene borazines and borazatruxenes. Using temperature-dependant and concentration-dependant 1H NMR, we probe the supramolecular aggregation of these molecules in solution. Finally, we synthesise 2D hybrid material comprised of electron delocalised benzene rings and electron localised borazine rings. Using a combination of solid-state 11B and 13C NMR techniques, Raman spectroscopy and XPS, we confirm the presence of benzene and borazine regions in these novel materials.

Intramolecular benzyne trapping by alcohols have been applied to the synthesis of a series of racemic chromans. The theme of this project was to utilise this technique in the synthesis of the precursor, (/)-8-iodo-6-methoxy-2,5,7-trimethyl chroman-2-methanol, to the natural product Vitamin E. The racemic form of the above compound has been synthesised in 12 linear steps from the commercially available 2,6-dimethyl-4-nitroanisole. Attempts to synthesize the enantiomerically enriched side chain (-)-(1S)-3,4-dihydroxy-3-methyl-1-butyne have also taken place and was achieved in seven linear steps.
