Abstract:
Interest for business models and business modeling has increased rapidly since the mid-1990‘s and there are numerous approaches used to create business models. The business model concept has many definitions which can lead to confusion and slower progress in the research and development of business models. A business model ontology (BMO) was created in 2004 where the business model concept was conceptualized based on an analysis of existing literature. A few years later the Business Model Canvas (BMC) was published; a popular business modeling approach providing a high-level, semi-formal approach to create and communicate business models. While this approach is easy to use, the informality and high-level approach can cause ambiguity and it has limited computer-aided support available. In order to propose a solution to address this problem and facilitate the development and communication of Business Model Canvas models, two artifacts are created, demonstrated and evaluated; a structured metamodel for the Business Model Canvas and its implementation in an OMG standards-based modeling tool to provide tool support for BMC modeling. This research is carried out following the design science approach where the artifacts are created to better understand and improve the identified problem. The problem and its background are explicated and the planned artifacts and requirements are outlined. The design and development of the artifacts are detailed and the resulting BMC metamodel is presented as a class diagram in Unified Modeling Language (UML) and implemented to provide tool support for BMC modeling. A demonstration with a business model and an evaluation is performed with expert interviews and informed arguments. The creation of a BMC metamodel exposed some ambiguity in the definition and use of the Business Model Canvas and the importance of graphical presentation and flexibility in the tools used. The evaluation of the resulting artifacts suggests that the artifacts do facilitate the development and communication of the Business Model Canvas models by improving the encapsulation and communication of information in a standardized way and thereby the goals of the research are met.

Abstract:
The European health care is facing challenges with an increasing ageing population, with a higher frequency of chronic diseases, which have resulted in rising health care costs. Meanwhile, the trend shows how patients and citizens are becoming more active in their personal health care, with the number of existing doctors and nurses subsiding furthermore entailing problems. The area of eHealth, which involves information and communication technologies with health care, is hence seen as a partial long-term solution and is considered being a rapidly growing market both in Sweden, but also in Europe. eHealth services further consider to promote increased access, mobility and interoperability in the health care, but the lack of wholehearted commitment, financial support and complex EHR-systems in Sweden's municipalities and county councils might partially impeding down the development. The purpose of this report is therefore targeting to explore, identify and analyze prominent aspects for the continued development of the Swedish health care and eHealth services. The study also examines what subsequent benefits an implementation of an eHealth service entails, which also has been related to the identified prominent aspects. This master thesis is based on a thorough literature review extracted from a theoretical framework including an interoperability-, security-, mobility- and business-modeling perspective, which are used as a foundation for the building of a set of hypotheses, which are subsequently verified with the aid of gathered empirics. The empirics are obtained from 10 semi-structured qualitative interviews, as well as two case studies, which together resulted in key-findings and conclusions. Firstly, in relation to the interoperability perspective, it became clear how there should exist both a technical and social interoperability that communicate with each other. The EHR-systems of today are often considered difficult to learn, non-intuitive and lacking interfaces that are user-friendly designed for the end-user. Increased interoperability was also seen as enabling and simplifying the access to the patient’s medical history, which the EHR-system TakeCare evidently demonstrated. Furthermore, it was acknowledged how there is no correlation between the increased time spent by health care professionals with administrative tasks and documentation with an increased interoperability. It also emerged that patients and the dominant part of the population had either no or very limited knowledge regarding the underlying security and overall management of personal health information in health care. Patients instead often blindly trust the Swedish health care system being secure, and prioritizing other things during medical appointments. The knowledge of security issues in the health care is predicted to increase among patients if they in the future would obtain full access to their own medical records. There is also a general opinion among health care professionals and related instances how new security risks will arise alongside the eHealth wave, with a particular concern for the increasing involvement of mobile devices. Relationships between an increased interoperability also seem to favor increased mobility in health care, but security aspects often prevent the mobility development. Finally, it was unanimously espoused how non-financial values must not be ignored, where the on-going debate argues whether what real impact these non-financial values have, where inter alia strict budgets and large gaps between the decision-makers and end-users appeared as issues. Similar arguments were encountered regarding the actual impact of the opinions of patients in relation to business modeling, where a tripartite-problem and the patients’ limited access to their medical records was partly seen as a primary issue. Secondly, the case studies demonstrated how a transition to the EHR-system TakeCare generally did result in cost- and resource savings in terms of local servers, IT-maintenance and inventory management. The TakeCare implementation also led to an increased visibility among health care centers by enabling and simplifying the access to patient medical history. Increased communication, awareness, and more effective internal processes due to integrated modules and direct connections to ePrescriptions could also be accessed from the TakeCare transition. Finally, it emerged that relations existed between simplified access to the patient’s medical history and how it subsequently resulted in an increased interoperability. A correlation was also seen as the health care become generally more mobile due to increased interoperability.
Samband kunde även ses hur ökad interoperabilitet positivt gynnar mobiliteten i sjukvården.

Abstract:
A mechanical industry company’s need for an effective and suitable business model is higher than ever before due to new emerging technologies, especially within digitalization and Industry 4.0. As the Internet of Things (IoT) trend is emerging, companies need to identify new value propositions and adapt their offerings and revenue models in order to meet the customers’ new demands. The current amount of studies that have been conducted in the area of new business models and product offerings with regards to the IoT technology are limited. Therefore, this study has examined and analyzed how a new business model should be designed and what kind of new product offerings a company in the mechanical industry should offer in the area of IoT and servitization. The literature study contains information about Industry 4.0, Internet of Things and Servitization while the theory study addresses theories regarding the business model canvas together with the KANO model. The study has been executed by conducting eleven semi-structured interviews, where nine of the interviewees were employees at our commissioner and the remaining two were customers of our commissioner. The internal interviews were held with executives and managers who represented eight different divisions as well as three different nationalities. The customer interviewees represented two different companies with different sizes and ownership structures. The results of the study indicate that the IoT technology contributes to several new possible product and service offerings, together with new revenue streams, as well as a need for implementing a new servitized business model. Conclusively, offerings such as predictive maintenance, remote assistance, and machine optimization among others, can be offered to the customers with the help of the IoT technology. Furthermore, new payment models such as upfront payments together with a service agreement with monthly payments, are vital parts of a new business model that has to be implemented. In addition, a closer customer relationship is required when moving towards servitization in the area of digitalization and IoT.

Abstract:
Chinese traditional garment enterprises not only have to face inventory and channel problems left over by history, but also encounter the influx of new online companies into the market, resulting in a significant decline in the turnover of the traditional garment industry. With the promotion of e-commerce, the economic development of the garment industry presents a new trend. In order to find new opportunities in the environment of increasingly fierce competition, traditional garment enterprises have embarked on the road of strategic transformation. This study takes a garment company DLD as the research subject and displays the primary information through the Business Model Canvas. A case study, therefore, is the research strategy applied in this study, and data are collected through interviews and questionnaires. The primary method of analyzing data is a combination of qualitative and quantitative analysis. The purpose of this study is to provide a useful reference for the enterprise in the transformation of e-commerce. SWOT analysis is conducted under the background information based on the Business Model Canvas, which demonstrates the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats encountered in the transformation process of its sales channel from offline to online. Combined with the Enterprise Modeling, this study summarizes the strategic transformation of the DLD company and proposes corresponding strategies and recommendations. Implementing the O2O e-commerce mode and the C2B business mode effectively reduces the product backlog and improves the company's competitiveness in the market. In the process of implementing these two modes, establishing a consumer database, unifying product prices, and establishing online and offline coordination teams are some practical methods for adjusting conflicts between sales channels and increasing product update rates. Besides, through the questionnaire, the recommendations proposed in this study are evaluated, two of which required further investigation and design.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The purpose of this degree project is to analyze and investigate how digitalization will affect business modeling in the district heating business. The chosen approach to this degree project was an iterative, abductive method, in order to always use a feedback-analysis and to keep the project open for new findings. The interviews were a mix of a structured method and a qualitative approach. With the structured method, the findings from the interviews were similar and regarding the research topic, and the qualitative approach in some open questions led to matters that otherwise would have been unnoticed. The interviews were performed via e-mail, phone and through personal interviews. This degree project concluded that digitalization has an impact on business modeling in district heating. Digitalization will affect some elements in a major way, for example key resources that will be characterized by digitalization. The findings from this work showed that a business model operating in district heating in a time of digitalization should focus on three main parts: economy, environment and easy visualization. An optimization tool should focus on delivering a value that consist of these three, and the remaining elements should together contribute to that value proposition.

Abstract:
In today’s competitive market, a well-integrated business model can play an important role for a competitive advantage. One tool to create business models is the business model canvas. This method is used by many big organizations, and among these users is Communication Ltd. They are currently working on changing their focus from product to service. This change requires some big changes in the company´s business models, revenue streams and in their value proposition. The goal of this thesis is to analyse new possible revenue streams and also investigate if these could be of use for Communication Ltd. To reach this goal this thesis uses a theoretical base along with empirical data such as interviews, secondary data and a study of revenue streams in external markets. The conclusion reached in this thesis is that going from a product focus to a service focus requires structural changes in revenue streams, but also a clear communication of the value an organization is offering their customers. Furthermore for an organization to meet future customer needs, new types of revenue streams must be implemented. One solution to this could be for an organization to offer different types of memberships where different values are bundled together deepening on what the customers’ demands.

Abstract:
Project management has seen significant growth which has been beneficial to academics and practitioners in the field alike. However, the alarming trend of project underperformance continues. This points to an apparent relevance gap in Project Management. One of the areas that has been highlighted as an important area for further study to improve this situation is project front end management. Using Design Science as research methodology, the knowledge contribution of this research is an artefact called, the Project Conceptualisation Canvas. The Project Conceptualisation Canvas represents a process to be followed to ensure that the conceptualisation phases of potential projects are adequately performed. The Project Conceptualisation Canvas was developed using as input the results of the systematic review of literature on the typical challenges that occur during project conceptualisation. The Project Conceptualisation Canvas was evaluated through two sets of focus groups which confirmed that it contributes towards the improvement of project conceptualisation practice. The relevance of the contribution of the Project Conceptualisation Canvas is that it will improve decision making during the project conceptualisation and selection process which will ultimately result into improved project delivery and reduced opportunity cost that results from underperforming projects.

Abstract:

There are many studies on business model innovation with startups and big corporations but the scenario for small businesses is quite different and requires special attention. The objective of this study is to investigate how an established small company of Information Technology innovates on its business model over time. To do this, we conducted a case study to identify the factors that impacted on the business model, from the perspective of nine building blocks of Business Model Canvas. We also evaluated the applicability of the tool related to strengths and difficulties of the drafting process, tool completeness and future opportunities of innovation from the Canvas. The most important factor was the open innovation, because in addition to keep the focus on the core business, the small business can respond to market needs faster and keeps customers engaged with innovation. It is essential to build an internal environment capable of fostering innovation and spreading to the whole team a systematic view of business, using Canvas as assistant tool and enabling the company to relate to external stakeholders (research institutions, big and small companies, startups). The good partnerships encourage the growth of the company while creating benefits to both and providing a complete solution to customers.

Abstract:
With an increased level of digitization in the retail sector, retail incumbents need to adapt their business model to the new digital era. E-commerce business and other digital tools have transformed the retail industry and incumbent retailers have to react to the changes in order to remain competitive on the market. While previous research has examined the nature of the digital tools in retail or the general impact of digital transformation on the sector, the thesis aims to investigate the impact of digital transformation on the business model of a retail incumbent. To investigate the impact of digital transformation on the business model of a retail incumbent, a single case study has been conducted at Company X, an incumbent retailer operating in Sweden. The Business Model Canvas has been used as a tool to identify the current business model of the company, and to propose future business models for Company X. The findings have resulted in the creation of three different Business Model Canvas scenarios with different levels of change in the business model. The scenarios all implied an increased cooperation with external partners and the implementation of new customer channels. The findings of the thesis contribute to an increased knowledge of retail business model change. While earlier research findings regarding the impact of digital transformation on the retail sector were confirmed in the case study, the thesis proposes new research concerning the impact on a retail incumbent’s business model. The study also contributes to how the Business Model Canvas may be used as a unit of analysis when investigating business model change.

Abstract:
The primary water sources of twenty million people in Bangladesh are contaminated with arsenic; almost sixty percent of population does not have access to electricity, and close to ninety percent of the population cooks with solid fuels. These statistics have severe health and development implications for Bangladesh. Polygeneration technology is being developed that can address all of these issues with a single system, by utilizing the exhaust heat from a biogas electricity generator to remove arsenic from water via membrane distillation and using excess biogas as a cooking fuel. History is full of stories of investment in developing countries gone horribly wrong. Thorough market research and analysis can help prevent that in the future. This thesis demonstrates the process of determining beneficial components of business models for the deployment of polygeneration technology in Bangladesh. This involves understanding the existing business models used for providing rural services in Bangladesh and assessing which of these models would be more sustainable for biogas based polygeneration systems within the socio-economic and institutional context of rural Bangladesh. This is achieved through the development of a set of sustainability indicators and an interview questionnaire for providers of rural services in Bangladesh, which was applied during a field study in early 2013. The sustainability indicator scores were calculated and analyzed in the context of strategic management tools, such as the Business Model Canvas. The combination of the quantitative and qualitative aspects of these case studies highlights crucial business model elements. Based on the results of the sustainability indicators for the field sites included in the study, community and cooperative business models provide a sustainable structure for the multiple products and inputs inherent in a polygeneration system. They have the ability to reach a wider customer base and are not focused on maximizing their profit, but still make reasonable economic choices.

Abstract:
There has been an increased demand on the mobile infrastructure, with enhancement in technology, content delivery and regulatory changes on access and competition rules. According to Ericsson the mobile data traffic is expected to grow with 45% from 2013 until 2019. These changes have to do with the fact that the service provider’s traditional pricing schemes are distinguishing. These changes enables new business models. The main two drivers behind the growth of mobile data traffic are (1) increased number of mobile data subscribers and (2) the average volume per subscriber has increased. At the same time the revenues are growing extremely slow in comparison with data usage, the revenues from the mobile broadband are limited to just a few cents off ARPU. One of the operator looking at different solutions in order to reduce the revenue gap is Telenor. Telenor wants to incorporate in its business model is videoconference with QoE taken into account. They have therefore developed a new service called Appear.in. Appear.in is challenging the existing video conferencing market. The main goal of the thesis is to investigate how business model for videoconference services changes when quality of experience is taken into account. Furthermore what will the effect be of having QoE in the BM? The primary steps that needs to be considered in order to achieve the goal is to identify the ecosystem of videoconference solutions and analyzing the business models that can be considered to deploy videoconference systems. Several workshops and survey was conducted. Moreover two different Business Model Canvas was created with and without QoE. A comparison was made and based on these comparisons one can conclude that there is not must that differs. When QoE is considered, three out of nine building blocks in the Business Model Canvas gets affected by the addition of QoE, value proposition, customer relationship and customer segment. These building blocks gets involved with customers in one way or the other. By including QoE in the Business Model Canvas showed a way to keep the customers satisfied. Furthermore companies would have the advantage of monitoring and tracking every movement allowing for quick decisions, guaranteeing video quality by preventing the development of videos problems. A number of investigations have been done in the area of Videoconferencing from a technology point of view, but one can find very little research related to Business model. General studies in the field of business model over QoE are being carried out. This thesis is a first step towards a wider and deeper investigation in the area of Videoconferencing with QoE from a Business model point of view.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to investigate how biotech SMEs structure their business model to deal with the industry’s challenges. The first step was to lay a theoretical foundation of the business model and clarify ambiguities surrounding the business model concept. This lead to the Business Model Canvas, which was used as tool of analysis for this thesis. Semi-structured interviews were then conducted with companies, experts and cluster managers, following the nine building blocks of the Business Model Canvas.   The results showed that two typologies of business models could be seen, which we divided in pharmaceutical biotech SMEs and non-pharmaceutical biotech SMEs. Both business models face challenges of research and development process, but to different degrees. Pharmaceutical biotech SMEs deal with long, costly and risky research process, which results in a research-centered business model. During the research period, these companies don’t generate revenues through sales. Non-pharmaceutical biotech SMEs on the other hand, face less harsh research and development processes, which allows them to market their products faster and generate revenue from sales. This results in a more customer-centric business model than the pharmaceutical biotech SMEs.

This dissertation aimed to analyze the association of the Business Model Canvas (BMC) methodology with the critical factors for the success of MSBs in Brazil in light of Porter's competitive strategy theory. The work is justified by the fact that there are factors in the management mechanisms that, oftentimes, when neglected, can cause an increase in the probability of small business mortality. These factors can be divided into three categories: environment, company and managers. These have intrinsic connections with strategic issues, because they relate to legacy forces to both the internal and external environment organizational environment. In the wake of the reasoning it was realized that as MSBs can be efficient in their day to day, but ineffective with regard to strategic decisions. This may be related to the fact that managers do not formalize the strategy of the company because they do not know and/or they don?t know how to use the strategic tools or believe that employing them will require a lot of time. Thus, it was understood as important to reflect on the implementation and operationalization of a management methodology (BMC), associated to an approach for the elaboration of competitive strategies in order to contribute to the survival of small businesses. To achieve the goal of the study, the research is outlined as bibliographic because it was analyzed the main work on the BMC. The analysis of the results was based on the analysis of qualitative structural content, in which structuring categories and anchors were defined based on the theoretical reference. From this, the textual elements, that was extracted from the chapters referring to the BMC units, were compared with the literature review about MSBs and strategy. It was noticed that the analyzed tool has strengths, but also weak points. Although the model presents itself in a practical but in a less bureaucratic way, it analyzes the organization's' external environment in a superficial way, understanding the competitive forces uncritically. Besides that, it was understood that the greatest weakness of BMC is based on the fact that it does not address the relationship of the company and the business' sector, as it exerts influence both in the actions that encompass the internal and external environment. The understanding of the industry that the organization is inserted makes it possible to assess the barriers that prevent it from entering and leaving the business. In this way, it was understood that from the point of view of MSBs survival, it is necessary for the manager to be able to project the value chain and the strategic actions of the enterprise according to the behavior of the industry. Thus, the need was felt to reformulate the BMC structure to include the organizational strategy. The proposed layout addresses the analysis of the industry, considering the competitive forces. The intention was to associate the characteristics of strategic planning in order to assist the leader in the perception of the influence of the external environment and its stakeholders under the company.
O layout proposto aborda a an?lise da ind?stria, considerando as for?as competitivas.

Abstract:
The economic development of the world in the last centuries has brought manypositive things, but also some new problems. The linear approach long used isbased on a long-term, unsustainable approach to economic activity and newmodels are required. The purpose of this report is to investigate newsustainability requirements that drive innovation with regard to business modelsand product development.A case study was carried out at the company Ecostrate, which is launching anew product with clear sustainability ambitions. A Triple Layered BusinessModel Canvas (TLBMC) is made for their product and from this case the roleof Circular Economics (CE) and sustainability in the formation of new businessmodels is evaluated. The case study was based on interviews made withcompany employees and other people in a focus group and on secondary dataprovided primarily from Ecostrate, but also other organizations and companies. From the case study, it can be seen how the business model of the product was, from start, designed in accordance with circular economic principles and with afocus on sustainability, where the starting point was a used material that wasthen altered to once again provide the consumer with a value offer. Accordingto profitability estimates, the product will competitive while significantenvironmental and social savings are possible. General conclusions can bedrawn that CE and sustainability are an important part of future business modeldesign, without which companies will not be competitive in the future andfuture markets with increasing raw material prices, stricter regulations and moreaware and sustainability-prioritizing customers. The primary limitation has been the calculations, which were not carried out asexhaustively as would have been needed in order to give the case study a morestable empirical foundation. In this study, they have been used as approximativevalues to draw generalizable conclusions so to understand the product, itsimpact and in order to get more precise implications for the rest of the market, there exists possible future research.

Abstract:
This study aims to create an understanding of how companies are assessed in the selection process of business incubators and identifying the qualities that business incubators value in the assessment. A business incubator is a company that provides start-ups with local, consulting and different types of services. Entrepreneurs with business ideas are applying to incubators to get help develop their ideas and their business. The empirical material has been gathered through six qualitative semi-structured interviews with individuals who have an insight into the selection process of a business incubator. The empirical material is analyzed using the research and literature on business incubators, but also using the model Business Model Canvas. With the help of the empirical material and the theory of this study, an understanding has been created for the selection process. The study shows that all those applying to a business incubator are in different phases and business incubators have different main criteria. That’s why the company has to find the right business incubator for them. The idea and the entrepreneur have been raised as two independent parts as it has been found that business incubators assess these two parts separately. We have found a pattern that shows that there are two different selections in the selection process with a verification phase in between. The selection process is also seen from a sustainability perspective where it can be concluded that it is not a matter of course that it is weighted in the assessment of the companies.

Abstract:
Business model innovation is used parallel with technical development to create competitive advantage within certain line of businesses. Many business have although not yet fully embraced business model innovation as a competitive foundation and still rely on technical development of products and services. The actual concept of business models and business model innovation has many different definitions and is perceived as ambiguous. The real estate business is a traditional line of business that often rely on technical development, location of the property and rent levels primarily as the competitive factors. As other line of businesses work more with business model innovation, as the IT-business, the interest for business model innovation grows in the real estate business. The purpose with this essay is to describe and analyze business model innovation within different types of real estate companies. Furthermore it’s investigated how companies within the real estate business today defines and uses business models. The study is based on a qualitative method whereof interview studies have been performed on different types of real estate companies. Primary data consists of interviews with 11 representatives from ten different real estate businesses. The result from the interviews have passed a thematic analysis to showcase eventual patterns in the answers from the interviewees. The definition of business models amongst the real estate companies was varying but all of them approached a definition that describes how a company works or creates profitability. None of the interviewees used business model innovation in a structured manner via for example a framework. The real estate companies on firsthand used technological development when innovating and not business model innovation.

Abstract:
In light of the many environmental challenges that the world currently faces, new sustainable solutions are called for. The concept of autonomous heavy vehicles (AVs) is considered to be one of the next megatrends within transportation and this technology shift is predicted to improve safety and logistics as well as to cut driver costs and reduce CO2-emissions. However, from a company's perspective, technology shifts are not without risks as technical disruptions can cause core competencies to become obsolete and radical technology innovation can be fatal to a company that does not innovate its business models simultaneously. Due to the complexity and novelty of the AV technology, business model innovation within the field has been lagging behind and there is an area of uncertainty regarding how a future business model for AVs could be formulated. In order to investigate potential business models for AV applications, this study has been carried out as an exploratory case study of two industry specific applications for goods transports within confined areas at the heavy vehicle manufacturer Scania in Södertälje, Sweden. The Business Model Canvas tool developed by Osterwalder and Pigneur (2010) has been used to map the business models of these two cases with the purpose of combining them into a general model. Furthermore, four important capabilities at the company have been identified and determined as to whether they qualify as core competencies based on the criteria presented by Prahalad and Hamel (1990) and then discussed in relation to how they can be leveraged in a future business model. The findings of this study help to formulate a business model perspective for future AV goods transport applications that consists of a service-based model characterised by a focus on collaboration and value co-creation, an adaptable level of integration with the customers' systems, transfer of ownership of products to the manufacturer and a value-driven source of differentiation. Lastly, the study concludes that Lean production and modularity are two existing core competencies of Scania that could be leveraged dynamically in a future business model connected to this technology shift.

Abstract:
There has been an unexpected wave of growth in social entrepreneurship globally (Bornstein, 2004). This growth is followed by the number of research in the field. Academic research has been mainly focused on defining what it is, what it does and does not have in common with commercial entrepreneurial activity (Nicholls, 2006). Thus, there has not been many studies related to the business model of social enterprise. Osterwalder & Pigneur (2010) believes that every organization has a business model, regardless the word ‘business’ not used as descriptor. This description includes social enterprise. Social enterprise, not unlike business enterprise, creates and delivers value and it must generate enough revenue to cover its expenses. By acknowledging that social enterprise has a business model, it opens itself to business model innovation with advantages to optimize its operations, deliver more values through effective channels, capture more values through profits and growth and drive innovation. This research is conducted on Indonesia Mengajar, a social enterprise in Indonesia that has no experience in business model design or Business Model Canvas using qualitative methods and interpretive paradigm. Primary data is collected from interviews with Indonesia Mengajar. Secondary data comes from books, articles, journals and websites. The data are analysed with grounded theory method. By completing Business Model Canvas (Osterwalder & Pigneur) complemented with literature review and critical analysis of Indonesia Mengajar, the objective of this research to understand business model of social enterprise can be achieved. From this research it is found that adjustments are necessary for Business Model Canvas to capture the business model of social enterprise and based on the findings, it is concluded how social enterprise creates, delivers and captures value.

Abstract:
Many researchers are currently discussing a development of the digitalization, where everything is connected via Internet of Things (IoT), implying that products are equipped with sensors and embedded systems. These sensors can be connected to Internet in order to communicate with their environment. Although researchers disagree on when this new paradigm will happen, they agree that the usage of IoT entails advantages for companies’ value chains, as it optimizes work processes. Furthermore, researchers argues that success not longer is a question of technology, but rather a question of the transformation of companies, and which business models that could take advantage and generate profit from this development. Previous studies regarding business models are focused on substance of the business model, which have resulted in conceptual models. One well-established model is the canvas-model. The usage of the canvas-model in practice is however less explored. The purpose of this study was thus to examine how the canvas-model works in practice by conducting a case study on the contemporary business model of Veolia Nordic. Future visions with respect to IoT have also been examined. The result of the study implies that the canvas-model is inadequate when implementing it on the business model of Veolia. The business environment is constantly changing and competitive, and businesses need to find innovative possibilities and evaluate them against the business context in order to find optimal solutions. This entails that companies, such as Veolia, should look at the business model as a process that requires progressive improvement, rather than a static image of contemporary data. Furthermore, the canvas- model is considered to be better suited for companies focusing on products, rather than services. To use the model as a tool for strategic decisions in a company like Veolia, it is appropriate that the canvas-model is extended to characterize more building blocks from a transformative perspective. When looking at the development of IoT, the model could be further adapted along the specificities within the paradigm, for example along the terms of security and liability issues, as these are important to consider when making decisions about strategic initiatives. This study has shown the importance of business models and the need to adapt these to external occurrences, such as the new paradigm IoT.

Abstract:
Industrial symbiosis involves cooperation by exchanges of resources between companies, and furthermore develops regional competitiveness and increase new business opportunities. To consider the definition of industrial symbiosis within a company, and allow innovations in circular economy and resource usage, creates opportunities for a company to grow businesses by reaching economic development and increased efficiency. The research questions investigate how a business model develops cooperation between a recycling company, an energy company and a real estate manager, in manner of connections between relevant businesses in industrial symbiosis. A case study with the three companies Ragn-Sells, E.ON and Vaderholmen AB is accomplished, with divisions of six responsibility roles to maintain cooperation in development of industrial symbiosis between the three companies in Broporten, Upplands-Bro. Broporten is a projected area in Upplands-Bro and this report is made as a step to implement industrial symbiosis in the area. The result shows that cooperation between three main partners; recycling company, energy company and real estate company, leads to an effective implementation of industrial symbiosis since the individual core businesses have useful supplement. The industrial symbiosis in Broporten can be developed and maintained by the three cooperating companies Ragn-Sells, E.ON and Vaderholmen AB by using a canvas business model supporting the cooperation. Different scenarios show how responsibility roles can be divided between the three key partners and depends on decision of chosen scenario. The most successful scenario is when Vaderholmen AB is Park coordinator, because Park coordinator is close to Vaderholmen AB’s core business. Network coordinator is suitable for both Ragn-Sells and E.ON since they already are involved in geopolitical framework. It results in following division; • Ragn-Sells as Recycling company, Knowledge company and Network coordinator • E.ON as Infrastructure company, Process industry company and Network coordinator • Vaderholmen AB as Park coordinator The role as network coordinator should only correspond to one Key Partner. Potential businesses for implementation of industrial symbiosis in Broporten are a cluster with greenhouse, slaughterhouse, dairy, bakery and brewery, beneficently located close to a combined heat and power plant (CHP plant). The total maximum margin of yearly output of district heating from the CHP plant to the five priority industries demand are 3.6%, and 11% for electricity. The total maximum margin of yearly output of organic fertilizer from the biogas plant to the five priority industries demand are 0.4%. The total maximum margin of yearly input of biological waste from the five priority industries to the biogas plant is 4.1%. It leads to questions regarding the relevance of E.ON’s biogas in Broporten. Potential dimensions suitable for Broporten are 5000 m2 for greenhouse, 5000 m2 for slaughterhouse, 40,000 m2 for dairy, 15,000 m2 for bakery and 10,000 m2 for brewery.

Abstract:
Background:   This research paper studies the potential of the Flourishing Business Canvas developed from the new research field of Business Models for Sustainability. Throughout the literature review arguments for the new concept of Business Models for Sustainability are made. Showing also the need for a tool that can help companies to transform towards a BMfS. The Flourishing Business Canvas is the first tool being developed at the moment and is based on the Business Model Canvas of Osterwalder and Pigneur. In this research data from reports from three different fashion companies is used to complete the Flourishing Business Canvasses and to evaluatethe applicability and usefulness of the canvas. Aim:   The purpose of this study is to investigate the potential of the newly developed Flourishing Business Canvas through case studies of secondary data research in the fashion industry. The research will evaluate the applicability and usefulness of the building blocks of the alpha-version of the Flourishing Business Canvas on the basis of information gathered from annual reports, sustainability reports, home pages and academic research. To contribute to the ongoing research of this tool, the research will try to suggest improvements where needed to make the tool suitable for the sustainable development of the fashion industry. Methodology:   The research is performed trough a qualitative research based on three small casestudies. The canvas is completed for three fashion companies, of three different market segments, based on published reports, media articles and research articles. The gaps in the canvas and the usefulness of the answers will be defined. Results:   The results of the research showed that the three companies follow the four mainarguments for a Business Model for Sustainability, but that what they express in their reports is notcompletely what they do in practise. The Flourishing Business Canvas for the three fashioncompanies was easy to complete as an outsider, this was mostly because they were transparentcompanies that published a lot of information. The questions in the Flourishing Business Canvasalso could show well the efforts on economic, social and environmental sustainability. Conclusion:   The Flourishing Business Canvas is a good tool for the fashion companies to show their economic, social and environmental sustainability in a schematic way and on strategic level. Although in general the canvas expresses that it shows true sustainability, two important elements of a sustainable fashion company; circularity and transparency, were not specifically defined.

Abstract:
The accumulation of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, produced by human activities in the energy sector is one of the main causes of climate change. Therefore, the decarbonization of power systems has become an urgent need the mitigate to the effects of climate change and achieve the energy transition. The share of renewable energy technologies has been increasing mainly due to the participation of new market players. Today, however, one of the great challenges is to maintain the electricity system’s balance and security despite the large amount of renewable energy resources connected to the grid. One of the approaches to deal with this issue and to increase power system flexibility is the Demand Response (DR). Moreover, scholars argue that business model innovation can act as an energy transition driver. This thesis examines business model innovations in the context of the energy transition by investigating emerging start-up business models. The implemented research methodology in this thesis consists of a systematic literature review and an investigation of empirical data of 15 European energy start-ups. As a result, the thesis provides the research community with (1) a grouping method to classify different Energy Business Models (EBMs) and an initial synthesis of the EBMs identified in the literature; (2) a framework to analyse start-ups in the energy sector, completed with the analysis of 15 energy start-ups; (3) and a conceptual tool for DR innovation, named as the Demand Response Business Model Canvas (DRBMC), which includes 12 interrelated elements. This canvas aims at evaluating DR activities and supporting the emergence of new DR business models. These results can also help entrepreneurs explore new demand response market opportunities, enabling a better understanding and providing a simplified analytic framework of existing business practices

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to examine how business models are described and used among a selection of small companies within the construction industry in Nyköping. The study also aimed to identify similarities and differences in how company managers in the construction industry formulate the concept business model. The study applied a survey research design where data collection was in the form of electronic surveys and public company information. Analysis of the collected data material was carried out through thematic analysis of primary and secondary data.  The similarities identified were that companies consistently formulated their responses through the building blocks of customer segments, distribution channels and customer relationships. It was the same company that described the above-mentioned building blocks in detail and the remaining companies partially formulated the building blocks. The study's results were considered to strengthen previous research which presents that education could have a positive impact on how managers formulate the business model concept. The positive impact of the factor work experience cannot be confirmed in this study. Furthermore, none of the study companies used the concept business model in their daily work. The company managers in this study were considered to be familiar with their businesses. But the practical corporate culture and logic within the construction companies could mean that the formulation of the business model concept differs from how the concept is presented from a theoretical perspective. Accordingly, the study emphasized the importance of using business models as a theoretical tool in the construction industry.

With the burst and spread of new entrepreneurial projects all over the world comes the need to rethink the methodologies responsible for the development of this kind of business. The Lean Startup philosophy appears as a movement dedicated to the understanding and support of innovative projects that work under a high influence of risk with the purpose of limiting it as well as answering to the limitations that these kind of organizations usually face. This thesis studies the life of a project and team since the stage of the idea conception until the product launching moment, describing each step of the process and exploring the Lean Startup tools that allowed a fast analysis of the clients' needs, a precise evaluation on the quality of the solution, an external environment analysis and the conception of a viable financial strategy. This thesis is focused on the main tools, essential for any Lean project such as: The Business Model Canvas, the Validation Board, the Value Proposition Canvas and the Blue Ocean Canvas, showcasing this model a a viable alternative for the traditional and exhaustive business plan, defending a fast but not perfect marker entry, under the vision of the statement: Fail fast, succeed faster. Abstract:
We are living in the “Anthropocene” the era in which human activities are responsible for severe damage to the resilience of the ecological and social systems, undermining the Earth’s autopoetic mechanism, integrity and ability to function as a healthy complex adaptive systems. The prevailing societal paradigm for business practices has yet to realise the reality of our current global unsustainable state – and the shift necessary to move us forward collectively. Startup companies have a unique opportunity to gain and leverage competitiveness and attractiveness for funding and customers through sustainability driven business strategies, models and value propositions. This research analyses literature, document and interview data to explore if and how current practices in the Lean Startup contribute to a sustainable society – and how a Strategic Sustainable Development approach might be introduced to enhance the resilience of Lean Startups. Therefore, our key recommendations for Lean Startups that want to introduce an SSD approach are: to raise awareness about the sustainability challenges and opportunities; utilise backcasting towards a vision framed by the Sustainability Principles; focus on fulfilling fundamental basic Human Needs; utilize strategic prioritization questions when pivoting and combine the FSSD ABCD process with the Lean BML cycle. Ultimately, this thesis proposes the use of Strategic Sustainable Trigger Questions to (re)design sustainable business models and value-propositions. We conclude that “asking the right questions - rather than giving answers up front” might spark conversations and innovations in Lean Startups, beneficial for the sustainability of both the individual startup the larger socio-ecological systems.

Innovative technologies and products, high-performance materials and multi functional fibres are nowadays emerging and are known as technical textiles. This phenomenon, which is quite new in our vocabulary, but the technique and heritage of using textile as functional applications is rather old. The purpose of this thesis is to track the technical textile industries and product segment in Swedish history since the beginning of the industrial revolution and hereby contribute to a broader insight in the Swedish technical textile history. Five different technical textiles segments have been described with a company example after each. A case study methodology is chosen to deepen the analysis of two companies that acted in this particular segment of technical textiles. The companies Jonsereds Fabriker AB and Göteborgs Remfabriks AB were selected. By applying the business model canvas is this thesis trying to illustrate why the companies experienced difficulties to keep up the technical textile production during the 1970s and finally had to close down. By applying a modern business model to historical companies is this thesis furthermore proposing to additional research in the emerging technical textile field.

Abstract:
Today, society is increasingly influenced by the constant development of digitalization. Thisdevelopment includes new digital instruments and processes that change businesses and theirbusiness models. For the auditing industry, automation is added as a complement, which willstreamline the parts of the auditing process and enable auditors to focus more on advice. Thedigital instruments that digitalization entails mean that the smaller auditing firms are exposedto higher costs as the implementation of the tools is costly. Furthermore, not only the cost sideof digitization is affected, but the entire business model of the business. Hence, the purpose ofthe study is to investigate and analyze the extent to which parts of the audit process have beendigitized and the impact of digitization on the business model in small auditing firms. Thestudy's scientific approach is of a deductive nature with semi-structured interviews. The partsof the audit process that were analyzed were planning, review and reporting. During theinvestigation of business models, parts of the business model canvas have been analyzed. These are the following areas that were examined: customer segments, customer relationships, key resources and the revenue and cost structure. The results show that parts of the audit process have been digitized to varying degrees, the planning and review phases have been developed more by the digitization than the reporting has done. However, all parts have been made more efficient due to the digital tools that the agencies have implemented. During the planning phase, information gathering has been facilitated as the availability of information has increased as a result of the internet. During the audit, digital tools, such as analysis tools have facilitated and streamlined the auditors' work, as the tools make it easier to identify risks and deviations. Deviations are found when the auditors perform analysis by sampling from SIE4-files, which are the customer's accounting basis. For the reporting, it is stated that the part is in the middle of the transition regarding digitization. More digital reports are created which are then signed digitally compared to before when all reporting was in paper form.  For the business model, it is established that four of the five selected blocks have been affected by digitization. Digitization has meant that the agencies can now expand their customer segment to other locations as the distances have decreased in the form of data being sent digitally. Furthermore, customer relationships have been strengthened because the auditors are more accessible and can answer customers' questions quickly. The implementation of digital tools has entailed higher costs for the agencies, however, this is compensated by the fact that they bring in more customers. The block that has not been affected by digitalization is the key resources: intangible assets and human capital. Only the tangible assets have been affected as the agencies needed to purchase more equipment.

Nowadays, companies are focusing on reacting on market changes and on responding to a major question, which is how to serve an increasing demand for mobility with the lowest enviromental impact. There are few established companies on czech and global market trying to answer this question. The goal of the thesis is to show how these companies work. The main framework which has been used to serve the purpose is Business Model Canvas, which helps to display business models in a structured way. Based on this analysis, we can conclude that the 11 analysed companies would could not exist without the major progress in technology. Future of these companies strongly depends on a support they can get by cities and states. This thesis brings the first deep comprehensive reflection on this topic in Czech language.

Currently, one of the main problems is that “time” is becoming more important, which will cause people to perform multiple tasks every day because of a hectic lifestyle, and with it the issue of lost articles. and poorly placed also increases significantly. Although there have been initiatives by some small companies to offer solutions characterized by the use of positioning technologies, these have not achieved the desired success. That is why, in this research, a scheme for the design, evaluation and implementation and marketing of a product with RFID technology with location and alert functions in the absence of proximity to solve the aforementioned problem has been proposed. The scheme and the product were validated through focus tools, surveys and scenario analysis. Likewise, the components of the business model of the scheme allow to reach the demand.

The purpose of this study is to make an assessment of the components in the utilized business models of growing start-ups in markets with different level of innovation. The investigation is made based on how trends and competition in the industry affect the business model and what the similarities are between the business model components of successful start-ups in two different industries. This study contribute to literature on start-ups’ business models by beginning to map differences and similarities in start-up’ business models as well as how these are affected by and adapted to the industry. It also helps start-ups understand the importance and usage of different business model components. In order to make an assessment of different business models, a multiple case study approach is adopted where each case is a start-up company. The analysis then follows a 2x2 framework and is sorted by Business Model Canvas. Three analyses are made, one within each industry and one between the two industries. The first analysis compares the business models of two companies in the industry of electricity consumption measurements and finds that trends regarding the environment and innovation affects both the industry and its’ competitors. The second analysis compares the business models of two companies in the package deliveries industry and trends regarding online shopping are found to affect this industry. The third analysis compares the two industries and both differences and similarities are found. The main findings regarding the business model components are then applied to the commissioner company and other emerging start-ups. Findings shows that the investigated start-ups have adapted the business model components to trends in the respective industry. The business model also adapts to the technological development in the associated industry and in other industries as well. The use of social channels seems to affect the customer relationships. Competition have affected the business models’ of the investigated start-ups and it is noticed that international and national goals, such as lowering  the environmental impact, also affect the industry and the business models since these goals can encourage and push for change. Furthermore, each of the start-ups’ business model components have similarities even though the B2B, B2C and B2B2C strategies create differences. Furthermore, all of the start-ups are working with the trial and error approach, sustainability and environmental impact when developing their business model.

Abstract:
Utifrån Canvas analysmodell, hur ser Fantastic Franks E-business ut?
How does the E-business of Fantastic Frank look like according to Business Model Canvas? How does a small and niched real estate agency perceive E-business? The purpose with this study is to analyse the E-business of Fantastic Frank real estate agency by applying it to the Business Canvas framework and analyse how differentiation through E-business affects the success of the company. By conducting an interview with representative from Fantastic Frank management as well as founder of Fantastic Frank real estate agency, and furthermore conducting an interview with one of the real estate brokers at Fantastic Frank, the business model of the company could be applied to the Value creation model by Amit and Zott (2001). The Value creation model was used in order to analyse how Fantastic Frank differentiates by their E-business. Key resources, key partnership and key activities are the most important parts within Business Model Canvas for Fantastic Frank, for the company to be able offer its value proposition and differentiate itself. Other real estate agencies have started to offer similar kinds of home styling services, and Fantastic Frank should have to consider how to further develop its service. To create value Fantastic Frank should develop relationships with customers who have used the company’s services by relating to common interests in interior/design. Fantastic Frank sees opportunities to make use of E-business to establish itself in major cities around the world. Their present partners will most likely appreciate the possibility to expand with Fantastic Frank. The company differentiates itself by not using ads and other kinds of disturbing elements on its homepage, and would rather be inspirational. With their target audience in mind during the styling session home stylings differ from each other with the result that people return to search for new homes or to get inspiration. Fantastic Frank also spreads its risks since the company can be found on many kinds of social media.
