Abstract:
Gingival squamous cell carcinoma (GSCC) is a relatively rare malignant neoplasm of the oral cavity. It represents less than 4-6.3% of diagnosed intraoral carcinomas. GSCC may cause odontogenic symptoms such as mobility and pain of teeth mimicking inflammatory conditions such as periodontitis. Early diagnosis and prompt management of GSCC is of paramount importance as the prognosis of gingival squamous cell carcinoma is mainly dependent on these factors. Further, as, GSCCs spread rapidly to involve the underlying bone, the role of dentists in early detection of gingival squamous cell carcinoma

Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is one of the most common epithelial malignancies affecting the oral cavity with different clinical presentations. Carcinomas of the gingiva constitute approximately 10% of OSCCs and can mimic reactive, inflammatory conditions of the gingiva, leading to a diagnostic delay. Therefore it is of great importance to diagnose the lesion early for good prognosis. This article reports a rare case of gingival OSCC in a 39-year-old male patient mimicking an inflammatory gingival mass.

It is an aggressive variant of squamous cell carcinoma which resembles a true sarcoma. It is a proliferation of spindle cells and squamous cells. Although conventional squamous cell carcinomas are easily recognized, the morphologic variants of squamous cell carcinoma can present a diagnostic challenge. Familiarity with these variants is necessary because many are associated with unique risk factors and are characterized by specific molecular alterations (eg, nuclear protein in testis midline carcinomas). It is a result of numerous aetiological factors such as genetic predisposition, smoking, excessive alcohol consumption and viruses such as the human papilloma virus. Due to late diagnosis it has a high mortality and morbidity rates which has remained unchanged over the last 5 decades. Currently no screening is available for high risk patients for better monitoring. Diagnosing OSCC relies on histopathology of biopsy tissue, reviewed for dysplasia and advancing lesions. AbstractThe incidence of Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma (OSCC) is on the rise. Association with tobacco and alcohol is well established. Because of this Indian OSCC may require different parameters for treatment than that of the other oral cancer. Its prognosis also may not be comparable to others.
