Abstract:
This chapter addresses the diagnosis and management of bladder and renal cancers. In the UK, bladder cancer is the fourth most common cancer in men, and the eighth most common cancer in women. Bladder cancer arises from the bladder urothelium, and is typically a papillary transitional cell carcinoma. Chronic infection with the parasite Schistosoma haematobium is associated with squamous cell carcinoma of the bladder, and is most prevalent in Egypt and sub-Saharan Africa. Renal cancer accounts for 3% of cancers in adults in the UK and, in most cases, is a renal cell carcinoma arising from proxi

Skin cancer is very common in the UK, and its incidence is rising rapidly. There are two broad classes of primary skin cancer: non-melanoma and melanoma. Non-melanoma skin cancer is the commonest form (100 000 cases diagnosed annually in the UK), accounting for nine out of ten skin cancers and includes basal cell carcinoma (BCC) and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). Cutaneous melanoma is less common (10 000 cases diagnosed in the UK annually) but confers a significantly worse prognosis and accounts for 75% of skin cancer related deaths. There are also a number of other, rarer, non-melanoma skin c

Urinary bladder cancer (UBC) ranks ninth in worldwide cancer incidence. The most common histological type in Western countries is transitional cell carcinoma (TCC), while in Africa, a substantial proportion of squamous cell carcinomas (SCC) are observed related to the prevalence of infection with Schistosoma haematobium (bilharziasis). UBC has the highest per-patient lifetime cost for cancer in terms of healthcare expenditure compared to all other types of cancer. It is more frequent in men than in women and age is now widely accepted as the greatest single risk factor for developing UBC. The

Bacterial lung infection may be caused by a wide variety of pathogens and may present in different ways. This chapter discusses a case presenting with signs and symptoms that were initially treated as community-acquired pneumonia, before the presence of a complicated bacterial lung abscess became clear. The clinical course was complicated by an episode of atrial fibrillation. The patient did not improve, and an underlying squamous cell carcinoma was diagnosed. The initial investigation and treatment of pneumonia are discussed, as well as risk stratification, aetiology, differential diagnosis,

Abstract:
Penile cancers are rare primary malignancies located on the glans, foreskin, or shaft of the penis, excluding the urethra. The vast majority of penile cancers are epithelial tumors representing histological subtypes of squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). Most penile SCCs are believed to develop through pre-invasive lesions known as penile intraepithelial neoplasia and penile carcinoma in situ. They account for 0.1%–0.3% of all incident cancers (excluding non-melanoma skin cancers) in the United States and other developed countries and up to 1% of all cancers in some countries in sub-Saharan Africa.

In the developed countries, over 90% of the bladder cancer cases are transitional cell carcinoma (TCC), with squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), adenocarcinomas, and rare types of bladder cancer comprising the remaining 10% of bladder cancer cases. In Western regions, pure SCC of the bladder constitutes 1.2–4.5% of all bladder tumours. SCC can occur in both non-bilharzial and bilharzial bladders; the two subtypes differ in epidemiology, pathogenesis, and clinical outcome. Squamous cell carcinoma in the bilharzial bladder is an endemic disease in many regions of the Middle East, Africa, Southeast As
