Abstract:
Community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) is defined as an acute infection of the pulmonary parenchyma in someone who has not recently had close contact with the health care system. Common presentations include abrupt fever and chills, productive cough, purulent sputum, dyspnea, pleuritic chest pain, and the absence of rhinorrhea and sore throat. Prompt antibiotics and admission to the correct level of care are essential in emergency management. Chest radiographs and dry computed tomography (CT) scans can be extremely useful in confirming the diagnosis of CAP in immunocompetent patients. Assessment o

Abstract:
It is known that in one-half of the patients hospitalized for community-acquired pneumonia, severe sepsis develops, with non-pulmonary organ dysfunction developing in more than one-third and septic shock in 4.5%. Some years ago, it was found that acute kidney injury was common in community-acquired pneumonia even in patients who appeared to have an uncomplicated course of community-acquired pneumonia and where acute kidney injury was observed in one-quarter of them.

Abstract:
Severe community-acquired pneumonia (SCAP) remains the most common infectious reason for admission to the intensive care unit (ICU), reaching a mortality rate of 30–40%. The microbial pattern of the SCAP has changed with S. pneumoniae still the leading pathogen, but a decrease of atypical pathogens, especially Legionella and an increase of viral and polymicrobial pneumonias. IDSA/ATS issued guidelines on the management of CAP including specific criteria to identify patients for ICU admission with good predictive value. The first selection of antimicrobial therapy should be started early coveri

Abstract:
Pneumonia is defined as acute infection of the pulmonary parenchyma, presenting with consistent symptoms and signs and associated with new radiographic shadowing. It may be acute or chronic in onset and involve either one area of a lung (e.g. lobar pneumonia) or be multifocal in nature. It may be community acquired or hospital acquired. Community- acquired pneumonia is defined as pneumonia occurring in an individual with no recent contact with a healthcare setting, or in a patient admitted to hospital with development of symptoms and/or signs of pneumonia within 48 hours of admission. Abstract:
Pneumonia is a detailed guide that explains the causes, symptoms, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of this common and potentially serious lung infection. The article begins by defining pneumonia and describing how it affects the air sacs in the lungs, leading to symptoms such as cough, fever, and difficulty breathing. It explores the various causes of pneumonia, including bacteria, viruses, and fungi, and discusses the differences between community-acquired and hospital-acquired infections. The guide provides insights into the diagnostic process, including chest X-rays and laboratory tests

Abstract:
‘Atypical pneumonia’ is an old, but successful term, which covers respiratory infections caused by different micro-organisms, causing similar clinical symptoms, and characterized by similar antimicrobial sensitivity/resistance. Out of specific epidemic contexts, Legionella pneumophila, Mycoplasma pneumoniae, and Chlamydophila pneumonia are the micro-organisms involved, L. pneumophila being by far the most frequently involved in severe community-acquired ‘atypical’ pneumonia. It is important to suspect ‘atypical’ pneumonia on the basis of clinical presentation and the correlated extrapulmonary

Different types of infections affect the lungs. Viral infections include viral pneumonia, influenza, hantavirus, severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS). Bacterial infections include sinusitis, otitis media, pharyngitis, bacterial pneumonia, and community-acquired pneumonia. Mycobacterial infections cause tuberculosis and nontuberculous mycobacterial disease. Fungal diseases include histoplasmosis, blastomycosis, cryptococcosis, coccidioidomycosis, and aspergillosis. Parasitic lung disease is also reviewed.

Bacterial lung infection may be caused by a wide variety of pathogens and may present in different ways. This chapter discusses a case presenting with signs and symptoms that were initially treated as community-acquired pneumonia, before the presence of a complicated bacterial lung abscess became clear. The clinical course was complicated by an episode of atrial fibrillation. The patient did not improve, and an underlying squamous cell carcinoma was diagnosed. The initial investigation and treatment of pneumonia are discussed, as well as risk stratification, aetiology, differential diagnosis,

Legionellosis or Legionnaires’ disease (LD) is a common cause of community-acquired pneumonia and can cause rapidly progressive respiratory failure and septic shock. Respiratory symptoms generally predominate; nonspecific symptoms include fever, malaise, myalgias, anorexia, and headache. There are no characteristic presenting clinical or radiological features, and the severity of illness can range from mild to severe. Although erythromycin was initially used to treat LD, trials have demonstrated that the newer macrolides and the respiratory fluoroquinolones are the antimicrobial agents of choi
