A one-dimensional model of a curved rod is derived from the three-dimensional linearized elasticity. No positivity assumption on the curvature of the central line of the curved rod is made. The model is obtained by taking the limit in the equilibrium equation of the three-dimensional elastic rod when the thickness of the rod goes to zero. The appropriate convergence result is proved.

This paper presents a novel curve based algorithm of stereo vision to reconstruct 3D line-like objects. B-spline approximations of 2D edge curves are selected as primitives for the reconstruction of their corresponding space curves so that, under the assumption of affine camera model, a 3D curve can be derived from reconstructing its control points according to the affine invariant property of B-Spline curves. The superiority of B-spline model in representing free-form curves gives good geometric properties of reconstruction results. Both theoretical analysis and experimental results demonstra

This paper describes a new vision-based playback method of a wheeled mobile robot. The path of the robot is divided into straight line parts and curved line parts. The curved line parts were approximated by a Bézier curve to decrease the volume of data. In order to track the curved line parts with good accuracy, tracking errors were detected by referring to two pre-recorded images on one part of the curve. Then, the errors were corrected by adjusting the control points of the Bézier curve. Outdoor experiments demonstrated good repeatability by using the proposed method.

Abstract Studies published in recent years have documented a significant mean load effect on fatigue capacity for offshore mooring chain, and show that a reduction of the mean load gives an increase in fatigue life. However, current S-N design curves are based on fatigue tests performed at a mean load of 20% of minimum breaking load (MBL), which is well above the typical mean loads for most mooring systems. This paper investigates the mean loads experienced during fatigue damage accumulation for the mooring system of a typical production semi-submersible, operating in Norwegian Sea conditions.

Abstract:
Not in standard models. With conventional pricing frictions, imposing a flat Phillips curve also imposes a price level that is rigid with respect to supply shocks. In the New Keynesian model, price markup shocks need to be several orders of magnitude bigger than other shocks in order to fit the data, leading to unreasonable assessments of the magnitude of the increase in costs during inflationary episodes. To account for the facts, we propose a strategic microfoundation of shock-dependent price stickiness: prices are sticky with respect to demand shocks but flexible with respect to supply shoc

Evaluated the typical Gulf of Mexico pipelay barges and assess their ability to install 8 to 20-inch diameter pipelines in water depths ranging from 1000 ft to 3000 ft. McDermott's LB-29 and DB-28, Global Pipelines PLUS' Cherokee, and OPI's DLB-423 were evaluated. Allseas' the North Sea dynamically positioned lay vessel Lorelay was also evaluated for comparison. Pipe wall thicknesses to satisfy buckle propagation, collapse, and stability criteria were determined, and the results were used to select wall thicknesses for 8, 12, 16, and 20-inch nominal pipe diameters in water depths of 1000, 1500

This report summarizes the major findings from a PRCI Project on developing fracture initiation criteria for axial flaws (both through-wall and surface flaws) in high-strength line-pipe materials. This work was originally done on the basis to see if improvements were needed for higher-grade steels, but interestingly there were several outcomes that affect predictions for all piping steels. One of the outcomes of this work is a new correlation between Charpy USE and J-R curve for high-strength materials. Although it is based on limited data, it was demonstrated that there is significant differe

This report presents a methodology that determines the lowest temperature where ductile fracture would occur for either sharp cracks or blunt corrosion flaws in older low-toughness line pipe base metals. It is applicable to either axial or circumferential flaws in pipes under quasi-static loading, i.e., normal operating conditions with no sudden transient loads. The results showed that ductile initiation of a surface crack can occur at a significantly lower temperature than the Charpy transition temperature. This work uses on-line monitoring of turbidity to ascertain the temperature impact on the mixing performance of kneading blocks with different geometries. For this purpose, one of the barrel segments of the extruder was modified to incorporate four sampling devices and a slit die containing optical windows. The experiments consisted in reaching steady extrusion and then adding a small amount of tracer. Upon opening each sampling device, material was laterally detoured from the local screw channel and its turbidity were measured by the optical detector. Residence time distribution (RTD) curves

Abstract:
Magnetic flux leakage (MFL) is the most commonly used in-line inspection method for pipelines and will most likely remain the preferred technology for many decades. However, MFL does have its limitations on sizing corrosion anomalies. This work investigates an enhanced MFL implementation to improve assessment of corrosion anomalies. This implementation uses signals recorded at two magnetization levels: high levels typical of modern commercial MFL tools and low levels near the knee of the nonlinear magnetization curve. A method for combining signals from both field levels was developed, which c

This document presents a Gaussian Affine Term Structure Model (GATSM) of the zero-coupon public debt curve issued locally by the Colombian Government, adopting the methodological approach of Hamilton and Wu (2012) to solve the problems of identification and instability in the estimation of this family of models. Two empirical exercises are presented to highlight the relevance of this methodological approach. The first combines the GATSM structure with a Bayesian Averaging of Classical Estimates (BACE) approach to forecast the yield curve given a set of macroeconomic variables, thus offering a
