This thesis opens with the story of Matthew and his electric motor to illustrate the exemplary science learning that occurs when careful attention is paid to the cultural, social, and emotional dimensions of the learning environment. It is however unfortunate to note that while these displays of scientific fluency are indicative of their inherent possibilities, the stark reality is that most students in this larg

This thesis advocates the importance of representational fluency in physics education. Multiple representations in science (e.g. graphs, words, equations, and diagrams) has been an area of much interest in physics education research in recent years. The thesis argues that this little-used term, representational fluency, is a way to draw together various ideas on how and why the use of multiple representations is important for physics students, educators, and education researchers alike. Part one focused on the analysis of speech samples of German speaking adults and children who stutter. Part two analysed bilingual German-English language development aiming to examine whether increased cognitive load of two languages is related to language errors. Since people who stutter do not speak disfluently all the time, but have stretches where speech is fluent, research has investigated whether there is a consistent pattern predicting fluency breakdown (Brown, 1937, 1938a, 1938b, 19
