Abstract:
A new endemic land snail species of the family Discidae, Atlantica (Canaridiscus) saproxylophaga Alonso, G. Holyoak & Yanes 2011, was recently described from La Gomera, Canary Islands (in Yanes et al. 2011). According to Rähle & Allgaier (2011) it is provisorily considered as belonging to the genus Discus. This species lives in the laurel forest and has the largest shell of all the Discidae hitherto known from Macaronesia. In the same habitat where D. saproxylophagus lives, we found individuals of similar size belonging to a second species of the taxon Canaridiscus. These two species s

Yanes et al. (2011) assume that the endemic Discidae from the Madeiran and Canarian Islands are members of the single genus Atlantica Ancey, with Atlantica s.str. and Canaridiscus Alonso & Ibañez as subgenera. As long as the anatomy of the type-species of Atlantica [Discus guerinianus (R.T. The subgenus Canaridiscus has been established by Alonso & Ibañez (in Yanes et al. 2011) for two newly discovered Canarian species, anagaensis Ibañ

Jean François Xavier Roffiaen (1820–1898) was a Belgian landscape painter with a profound interest in malacology. A founding member of the Société malacologique de Belgique, Roffiaen contributed several publications on molluscs. Among such studies, his 1868 paper on Swiss terrestrial and freshwater gastropods introduced 14 new taxa (species and varieties) belonging to the Clausiliidae, Discidae, Helicidae, Lymnaeidae, Valvatidae, and Viviparidae. However, Roffiaen's malacological contributions largely faded from recognition, primarily due to the unknown whereabouts of his type material. This s

Gurus claim that they are able to act as mediators to put disciples on the path of spiritual development in diaspora. This study aims to investigate this claim, researching the hypothesis ‘that changing cultural environments in the United Kingdom, compared to those of the Indian sub-continent, requires a different model of the guru-chela (guru-disciple), relationship?’ In effect it seeks to test the differences, based on the stability and sustainability of the relationship in diaspora?
